One thing that I find really exciting is the fact that there are cool startups popping up all across the country. Yes, Silicon Valley and the Pacific Northwest are still the primary places for technology focused companies to open up shop, but that’s becoming less and less true. That’s why I was intrigued by Fanzter—they’re web products company based in Collinsville, CT. Considering the fact that I’m from Connecticut and have never heard of Collinsville (it’s near Hartford), you have to consider it an unusual location for a startup (they would tell you it’s optimally located between Boston and New York City). Fanzter’s first (and only current) product is called Coolspotters. It’s a website that “makes it easy to discover and buy the products, brands, and fashions being used by your favorite celebrities – in their real lives, and in movies and television.” It reminds me a lot of what Delivery Agent is doing.

College Prowler

Back when I was looking at colleges, I had to rely on traditional guidebooks to get relevant information like average SAT scores, whether freshmen are allowed to have cars, and what the food is like. Finding solid information online was pretty much out of the question, and none of the guidebooks that I looked at seemed to have a good read on what the campus was really like. Then along came College Prowler in 2002 (after I was already at Cornell, which turned out great). They’re a Pittsburgh, PA based company that aims “to be the most accurate, complete, and honest resource on colleges and universities across the United States.” Although those are their words, I think that a more accurate description of what they do (also in their words) is:

No university affiliations. No half-truths. No out-of-touch authors who haven’t been in school for decades. A class project turned company, College Prowler produces guidebooks that are written by actual college students and covers the things students really want to know.

College Prowler’s guides are what college guidebooks should have always been. Unfortunately, it took a long time for anyone to realize how big the need for “real” information was. Along with guidebooks, College Prowler has also built an awesome web resource to help high school students make informed college choices. The best part is that they’ve recently made all of their online content free.

Social networking is a new thing, right? Not at all. Social networks have been around almost as long as the Internet. They’ve just become way more mainstream in recent years. Take Redwood City, CA based Care2 for example. They’re an online social network that aims “to help people make the world a better place,” and they’ve been doing it since 1998. That’s impressive, not only because it means that they were early to social networking, but also because it means that they survived the dot com bust of the early 2000s. “Making the world a better place” used to be strictly the territory of non-profits, but now we’re seeing more and more companies like Care2 that are choosing to be B Corporations. That means that they can do good and build a profitable businesses at the same time. That’s exactly what Care2 is doing with their “more than 50 employees, 11 million members, 400 nonprofit partners and hundreds of responsible advertisers making a difference.”

Housing Works

Homelessness is pretty terrible, but the problems that it leads to can be even worse. One of those problems is often AIDS. Housing Works is a New York City based non-profit that “provides homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS and their families with housing, meals, medical care, drug treatment, social support, employment opportunities and other lifesaving services.” The cool thing is the scale that they’re doing this on—they are “the largest community-based AIDS service organization in the United States.” That means that since 1990 they’ve served more than 20,000 New Yorkers.

Whether you’re trying to land an internship, start a business, get in shape, figure out your personal finances, or get a date, there’s one piece of advice that I’ve found to be the most appropriate. It’s really simple and a little disappointing, but it just works. Do something! Get off your butt and take action. It will get you 80% of the way to accomplishing your goal. I’m not the only one who thinks this. Do Something, a New York City based non-profit, has adopted this two word phrase as their name. They’re focused on encouraging teenagers to take positive ideas and turn them into action. Instead of focusing on a specific cause, Do Something is all about getting teens to do something about the issues that matter to them—whatever they may be.

Insitu

Not too long ago, the only unmanned aerial vehicles were planes flown by women (yuck, yuck, yuck). Now we live in a world where planes can fly themselves. Sometimes I like to consider myself high-tech for running a business on the web, then I think about the companies that design, develop, and produce autonomous aircraft and realize that I’m not high-tech at all. Bingen, Washington’s Insitu is one of those companies. They build UAVs that have amazing reconnaissance, communications relay, and geophysical surveying capabilities. Most of their work has been with the military so far, but Insitu is operating in an infant industry with an amazing potential for growth. In fact, from 2004-2007 Insitu’s revenue grew by 1,702.4% to $50 million annually. This performance put them on Inc. Magazine’s List of the 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies in 2006 and 2007. Insitu CEO Steve Sliwa was also named CEO of the Year for 2007 by Seattle Business Monthly. Insitu is clearly comfortable with taking off.

More and more often, I’m hearing from people whom I haven’t heard from in a long time. The e-mail usually goes something like this: “I was just looking around online for summer interns, came across your site and then realized it was you!” A few weeks ago, the guy who e-mailed me was friend from high school whom I hadn’t seen in probably 8 years (that makes me sound old). He’s living in New York City and is part of a very early stage startup called LiveIntent that needs interns. They’re focused on “helping advertisers to unlock Twitter as a channel for advertising and customer acquisition,” which sounds like a pretty smart thing to be doing these days. I don’t have much more on what the company is all about, because they really are that new.

The Chronicle of Higher Education Logo

If it’s not already summer for you, it’s gotta be close. You’re ready for a break from the world of higher education, but by the fall you’ll be yearning for that ivory tower. Most of you will resume classes and get your fix, but what if you want to take a Fall internship? How will you cope with so much time away from academia? Lucky for you, The Chronicle of Higher Education, which is based in Washington, D.C., is looking for Fall interns. As they put it, they are “the No. 1 source of news, information, and jobs for college and university faculty members and administrators.” Apparently 80,000 academics and 350,000 people in total subscribe to The Chronicle of Higher Education, while their website gets 12 million monthly pageviews. They were even “ranked in the top 10 of most credible news sources by Erdos & Morgan.” Clearly, The Chronicle is the place to go for information about higher education.

Online dating has come a long way – from picking people up in chat rooms to having a computer find your perfect match. Considering the reaction that many people still give when you talk about online dating, it has a long way to go yet. New York City’s Ignighter might be responsible for the next big step forward. They provide a free online dating service… for groups. That means that they’ll match you and your boys with someone and her girls and vice versa or however else you want to do it. You can all go out together and see what happens. Instead of worrying about ending up on a date with a psycho killer, you have to worry about going on a date with a bunch of psycho killers – and even if that happens, you have some friends to back you up. What a relief! This idea might just be crazy enough to work.

When it comes to non-profits, design matters. You may like to think that people will judge organizations by their mission and actions, but it’s often not so. A great logo, a slick website, or a beautiful brochure is often the best way for an organization to prove its legitimacy. The same biases play out in the business world. Professional design is a sign of professional quality. If you’re going to donate to, volunteer for, spread the word about, or apply for an internship with a non-profit organization, you’re more likely to do it if their design impresses you. Hopefully NYC based Empax will impress you with their design. They are “a pioneering graphic design house devoted exclusively to helping nonprofit organizations meet their marketing and communication challenges in a unique and effective way.”

I love simplicity. I also appreciate singularity. You know… One Day, One Internship. There’s so much clutter these days that it can become really hard to focus. I’m sure that you’re seeing it in your internship search, and you’re probably wondering why companies just keep layering on more complexity to what they do. If so, then you’re in good company. Mono is a Minneapolis, MN based branding, advertising, and design agency that is all about simplicity. They think that putting smart, innovative people on client projects is the key to great branding. That’s it. I like it. And so do their clients (it’s an impressive list).

Back when we featured Glam Media on One Day, One Job, there were rumors that they might be valued at more than a billion dollars. It seemed possible because Glam Media was the the #1 online women’s property with a network of over 600 publishers who reported 77 million unique visitors in the most recent month. Not too shortly after, Glam Media was facing layoffs. That’s what happens when your business is built on display advertising and a recession hits (I know the feeling). Anyway, Glam Media still has a lot of growth potential, and they now seem to be focused on entering the men’s market as well. They’re still an exciting place to be, and even if they’re overhyped, as some say they are, it would be a pretty cool place to intern.

I wasn’t going to write an Earth Day post today, because I hate the environment. (That’s not true, it’s just what I tell Green Peace people who harass me as I walk down the street. The real reason was that I was going to do Administrative Assistants’ Day instead.) However, I came across San Francisco based New Leaf Paper, which couldn’t be a more fitting company to feature on Earth Day. According to their web site, they lead “the paper industry in the development and distribution of environmentally superior printing and office papers.” It’s kind of like Dunder Mifflin gone green and moved to California (there’s an idea for the Michael Scott Paper Company!). If you’re surprised that a paper company can offer both quality and affordability while being eco-friendly, then you should check out New Leaf’s Eco Audit. I don’t know what to make of all those numbers, but hopefully you will. At the very least it sounds phenomenal that they saved 118 Trees, 5,551 Pounds of solid waste, 50,178 Gallons of water, 84 Million Btu of energy, and more.

I’m a sponge for random information. I’m not sure why, but I pick up all kinds of weird facts. Some people find it very impressive, while others think that I have way too much free time. If you’re like me and have a love for weird and unusual information, then you need to check out mental_floss – “where knowledge junkies get their fix.” I’m not a subscriber, but maybe I should be. Their About page does a great job of explaining what it is exactly that they write about. The magazine has 5 sections – Stories to Make You Smile, Feed Your Right Brain, Nurture Your Left Brain, Indulge Your Scattered Brain, and Learn to Spin the Globe. It’s everything that you need to be the king or queen of random information.

I’m about as far away from the world of crocheting, beading, knitting, jewelry making, quilting, spinning, and needle working as you can possibly be. The closest that I’ve come to the world of crafts is having my Mom knit me a scarf and meeting someone who may or may not (she was very secretive) be a part of a group of Chicago Crochet Graffiti Artists. Still, I know that this world of crafts exists – and it’s huge. That’s why it’s no surprise that Interweave Press, a craft media company with “businesses in magazine and book publishing, interactive media, broadcast programming, and events for craft enthusiasts,” still seems to be thriving after almost 35 years in the business. Although I don’t know for sure, I’d imagine that Interweave Press, which is headquartered in Loveland, Colorado and has other offices in Malvern, Pennsylvania and Stow, Massachusetts, is somewhat insulated from all of the trouble that most other media companies are seeing because of the niche that they work in.

Near West Side Community Development Corp. Logo

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m on the Board of Advisors of a startup non-profit called National Coaching Fellows. One of my fellow board members also has a full-time job at another Chicago based non-profit organization called Near West Side Community Development Corp. She said that they’re looking for interns, and asked me to share some information on the internships with you guys. Near West Side Community Development Corp. was established in 1988 “to create a viable, mixed-income community in West Haven without the displacement of low and moderate income residents.” They’re doing all kinds of things to make this happen, but they remain focused on doing everything in their power to make one small area of Chicago a better place to live.

When it comes to entry level jobs and internships, I consider myself to be a trendhunter. I usually have a pretty good pulse on what goes on with the employment of young people. Unfortunately, when it comes to trends surrounding things that are much cooler than jobs and internships, I’m not so forward looking. That’s ok by me, though, because I can always turn to Trend Hunter Magazine for the inside scoop on what’s up and coming in just about any genre. Right now it’s 3D Body Art, Skin Lacing, Sexy Politicans, Super Stretch Motorcycles, and Mythological Homes. Last week it was Reverse Photoshopped Art, Alien Sound Systems, and Shocking Animal Sculptures. I have no idea what half of those things are, but if I want to, Trend Hunter will tell me. After I graduated from college, I decided to take a responsible approach to my personal finances (and I wish I had done it sooner, so all of you current students listen up). It took me a while to get my act together, but once I did I started investing in the stock market through Scottrade, an online discount brokerage company that is headquartered in St. Louis, MO. (And before I go on with more information about Scottrade’s jobs, I need to give Ramit Sethi’s book, I Will Teach You To Be Rich, a plug because it just came out and is the best personal finance resource for young people that I’ve come across.) So, Scottrade allows me to buy and sell stocks at 7 bucks a pop. They also have a solid web interface that gives you access to all kinds of information, and they have 399 branches with helpful employees to answer you questions and get your accounts opened. I used to be really into Fantasy Baseball. Around this time of year, I’d buy up all kinds of fantasy guides (this was when print publications still had more information than online) and try to figure out whom I was going to draft for my team. Somehow this preparation always seemed to coincide with a day home sick from school. Anyway, the guides that my mom usually bought for me (while I was home sick, remember) were from Sporting News. I’d pore over them for hours and hours and craft my strategy. Charlotte, NC based Sporting News isn’t just about fantasy sports though, they’ve been covering sports since 1886. In fact, they even picked up the name “The Bible of Baseball” because of their extensive coverage of the sport. They recently moved from weekly to bi-weekly, but they’re still a huge name in the world of sports journalism.

If you’ve been reading for a while, you’ve probably heard me talk about old media and new media. Old media is dying and new media is thriving. And if there’s any proof to back that up, it’s that The New York Times – probably the world’s strongest old media brand – is facing severe financial struggles. But they’re still The New York Times. They’re trying to grab hold of new media, and they’re doing a lot of things right, but they’re just too big. New media is all about being small and agile, and large corporations still have a lot of adjusting to do. With that said, it’s evident from The New York Times’ internship postings that they’re moving in the right direction.

Beyond writing about a new company and its internships every day, there’s a lot of behind the scenes work that I have to do to continue growing my busines. A huge portion of that work falls under the categories of internet marketing and search engine optimization. Maybe I’m biased because I’m doing the stuff every day, but I think that being able to understand and implement online marketing concepts will be essential in many of the career paths that today’s new college grads take. Sustainability is big. A lot of people (and companies) are jumping on the green bandwagon for a wide variety of reasons. One place that a lot of people are starting to adopt green practices is in the home. That makes sense, because our homes reflect who we are. Being a travel writer is a dream job for a lot of people, but it’s not an easy field to be successful in. That’s because everyone wants to (and thinks that they can) be a travel writer. Sure, I’ll go to Europe for 3 weeks, write an article, and pay for my trip. Yeah right! You can blog about your travels, but once again making it pay is a completely different story. Today’s internships aren’t paid, but they will give you some much needed experience in travel writing that you’ll need if you eventually want to make a career out of it. Offbeat Guides is a San Francisco based startup that has taken a new approach to travel guides. Their product offers a level of customization that isn’t present in other guides. You give them some basic information about yourself and your travel plans, and they’ll create a guide that is specific to your needs. It looks awesome.

Consumers Union

A while back we took a look at internships with Gawker Media, a blog network that recently sold off a few blogs. One of the blogs that they sold off is one of my absolute favorites – The Consumerist, a blog about consumers’ rights. The reason that they sold off the blog wasn’t that it was unpopular, it was that it was nearly impossible to make profitable because of the need to not show impropriety through relationships with advertisers. Luckily for Consumerist fans everywhere, a perfect solution came about with the purchase of The Consumerist by Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports. Although Consumers Union isn’t a typical non-profit, they do an amazing job of providing regular people with the information that they need to make informed purchases.

Thunderhead Alliance Logo

Sometimes I can be a dunderhead. When I am behind the wheel of a car, I can get irrationally angry at having to share the road with pedestrians and bikers. And when I’m walking or riding a bike, I can get irrationally angry at having to share the road with cars. I can’t be right on both accounts, so the problem is obviously with me (or maybe with the government for not setting up a better transportation system). When it comes down to it, though, it’s pretty obvious that bikers and pedestrians are second-class citizens to drivers. Cars dominate the roads, and the burden of responsibility falls on those who are biking or walking to stay alert and avoid getting hit by a couple thousand bounds of fast-moving metal. The Thunderhead Alliance for Biking and Walking is a Washington, DC based non-profit advocacy organization that stands up for the rights of bikers and walkers by “strengthening and supporting bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations” across the country. They’re a meta-non-profit. organization – an organization for organizations.

Internship searching is hard enough on it’s own. When you have to worry about not being able to feed yourself over the summer because you might have to take an unpaid internship, it can become overwhelming. Obviously the best remedy is to find a paid internship, but that’s easier said than done. What you can do to ease your financial fears for the summer is to start paying attention to personal finance (that’s a link to Ramit Sethi’s I Will Teach You To Be Rich, because he’s the go to guy for that kind of stuff). You can also start using Thrive, a website that “brings all your credit card, checking, savings, retirement, and investment accounts into one place so you can easily see what you have, what you owe, and where you can grow.” They’re based out of New York City, and as far as I can tell they’re offering a product that is extremely similar to Mint, which has been on my radar for well over a year now. Still, Thrive appears to have developed a great tool for monitoring your personal finances, and since they’re hiring paid interns, we thought we should take a look at them.

Maybe it’s just me, but I swear that whenever I’m writing about an internship that has seasonal ties, I’m writing about it in the wrong season. That’s not the case today. Although Chicago is pretty flat, I don’t think we’ve seen a day above freezing in months. I’d imagine the snow at the ski resorts across the country has to be in great shape this year. I guess with these internships, you’ll be applying when the time is right, but if you land the internship for the summer or fall, it won’t be ski season anymore. That’s ok, if you can’t be skiiing, you might as well be thinking about it while interning at Skiing Magazine. I think that it’s pretty obvious what Skiing Magazine is all about, although I’d be interested to know how it differs from SKI Magazine which is put out by the same publisher, Bonnier Corporation.

These days it seems like more and more internships are unpaid. With the economy the way it is, people want to get their work done for free. We don’t mind it so much when it’s coming from non-profits, but areas like journalism seem to be some of the worst offenders when it comes to not paying interns who are doing valuable work. Today we’re going to at internships with The American Spectator – a journalistic publication run by a non-profit organization that actually pays their interns. The Spectator’s roots were planted in “1924 by George Nathan and Truman Newberry over a cheap domestic ale in McSorley’s Old Ale House,” but The American Spectator as we know it wasn’t started until 1967 when the Saturday Evening Club took over the defunct publication. Today The Spectator, published by the non-profit American Spectator Foundation, is a monthly magazine covering news and politics with a strong conservative slant.

Sorry for the delayed post today. For some reason the Internet connection in our office wouldn’t connect to our server, which meant that we couldn’t publish today’s post this morning. I trudged across town through the snow in 12 degree weather to make sure that you got your internships today.

Niche communities have always been a big part of what the Internet is all about. In the olden days if you lived in a small town and had eclectic interests, you’d have a really tough time meeting people with the same interests. Those days are over. Now you can find an online community for anything – anything. Although today’s company isn’t all that odd in the market that they target, they’re certainly focusing on a group that has been forgotten until now. Savvy Auntie is “the first community for cool aunts, great aunts, godmothers, and all women who love kids.” We’re not sure whether they’ve sided on the pronunciation “ant” or “awnt,” but either way they’ve decided to own the market for enthusiastic aunts.

Interns Are Like Nieces and Nephews…

In a lot of ways having an internship is like having a savvy auntie. If you want to have both, then you’re in luck. Savvy Auntie is currently looking for a number of interns. They have internships available in Video Production, Content, Gifts, and Community. The internships are unpaid, require 10-20 hours of work per week, and are located somewhere in New York/Northern New Jersey (they don’t make it very clear). They also require that their interns own a laptop. There isn’t a whole lot of information available on these internships; however, you can check out the profiles of Savvy Auntie’s current interns. If you think it would be cool to work with a former Fortune 500 executive to build a community of savvy aunts, then send a cover letter and resume to Jobs@savvyauntie.com. If you’re apply for the Content internship, be sure to include 3 writing samples.
