Google is an absolutely amazing company. They’re working on everything from information organization to e-mail to self-driving cars, but from a financial standpoint they’re kind of a one trick pony. 96% of their revenue comes from advertising, and the majority of that comes from search advertising. It’s not really a problem–it just shows what an amazingly dominant business model search advertising is. Unfortunately for the rest of the market, Google owns most of the world’s search advertising inventory. Yahoo! comes in at a distant second. And then there’s adMarketplace, a New York, NY based company that “delivers data-driven performance to the Internet’s leading marketers through the only search syndication platform that adjusts bids by both keyword and traffic source.”

This Gangnam Style craze is kind of ridiculous, right? I originally saw the video in July and found it pretty amusing, but didn’t think much more of it. A couple months later it has over a quarter billion views on YouTube. I’m not sure if the interest will carry over into other Korean entertainment acts, but if it does, DramaFever is extremely well positioned. They are a New York, NY based company that gives “you a better way to find and watch the best TV and movies from around the world.” Their original focus was on Korean dramas, but they are rapidly expanding their offerings of tv shows and movies from Taiwan, China, Singapore and the Philippines. Bollywood films and latin telenovelas will come next. What’s interesting about DramaFever is that they target their content toward English speaking audiences, so it’s not just about giving expats the content that they miss from home.

I used to be a big proponent of social media, but it keeps getting harder for me to see it as anything but a waste of time. Maybe that’s going a little too far, but I’m at the point where I’m overwhelmed by the endless flow of mostly irrelevant information. I need filters! Depending on what I’m trying to accomplish at a given time, my interest in social content can vary greatly. Spindle is a company that is building “the discovery engine for the social web.” They’re based in Boston, MA and they find “the most relevant and useful social content from shops, restaurants, bars, event venues, museums, art galleries, parks, and other businesses and organizations around you.” It’s only one piece of the puzzle, but when I’m looking for somewhere interesting to go or something fun to do, I’d love to use social data to see what’s out there.

I sometimes get embarrassed by how many screens I use at once. I have legitimately browsed Facebook on my phone while I was sitting on the couch watching tv with my laptop on my lap and my iPad tuned into MLB.tv. Just typing that kind of makes me feel like an idiot, but that’s the way it is now. This provides an interesting dilemma for advertisers. When we only had one screen in the house (the tv), they didn’t get 100% of our attention. Now there’s a good chance that we won’t even notice the ad on the channel that we’re watching. Tremor Video is a New York, NY based company that is working hard to increase engagement with video advertising, and one way they’re doing it is by hitting you on every screen you own. Their mission is “to bring the certainty of science to brand marketing,” and it sounds like they’ve developed some pretty cool technology to do that.

Two days ago we took a look at The Nerdery, a company that builds websites and apps for companies who have budgets with a capital B. They’re extremely good at what they do, but they’re not the guys to build your personal website (unless you’re a celebrity). If you’re looking for a do-it-yourself solution that will give you a great look at a really affordable price, then Squarespace might be worth considering. They’re a New York, NY based company that provides “elegant solutions that set new standards for online publishing.” They’ve already helped people create, host, and maintain 1.4 million websites, and they’re just getting started.

I don’t know if being a nerd has ever been cooler than it is now. As technology becomes more approachable, so do the people who make it. It’s even come to the point where kids who are anything but nerds are self-identifying as nerds by posting pictures of themselves wearing glasses on Instagram. They can call themselves whatever they want, but real nerds make stuff. That’s exactly what the nerds at The Nerdery do. The Nerdery is a Bloomington, MN based company (they also have an office in Chicago, IL) that partners “with creative minds and big thinkers to engineer and build award-winning interactive projects.” They’ve also managed to win a few awards for themselves including being named to the Inc. 5000 for five years in a row. This year they only came in at #1,041 with 305% three-year growth to $26.2 million in revenue. That’s ridiculously impressive.

I’m getting married in Chicago next year. It’s going to be a pretty big wedding, and Chicago is surprisingly short on non-hotel venues that can handle our numbers. With the help of our wedding planner we visited a bunch of venues and finally chose one that is going to be great. Then we had to do the same thing for the rehearsal dinner. The trouble is that it’s extremely hard to figure out which venues are possibilities. Had I know about Eventup, it would have been a lot easier to get an idea of what’s out there. They are a Santa Monica, CA based startup (with a sales office in Chicago, IL) that offers a “marketplace that connects people who are looking to find and book the perfect venue for their event with venue owners who are looking to rent out their space.” It’s surprising that there isn’t already an established player in this space, but Eventup seems ready to fill the void.

One of the best things about living in a big city like Chicago is that there are seemingly limitless sports leagues. I’ve only played volleyball so far, but I keep telling myself that I’ll do softball, dodgeball, and maybe even basketball. For a recent grad, sports leagues are a great way to meet new people and get in an exercise routine as you start your life in the real world. I remember when people used to be shocked that I would buy stuff online. They thought I was crazy to put my credit card number into a web form, and I though they were crazy for not thinking twice before giving their credit cards to random people who worked at stores and restaurants. While buying stuff over the Internet is now commonplace, you’d be shocked to know how painful and expensive it still is for businesses to collect payments online. It seems silly to spend a lot of time and money to make sure that your customers can pay you, but it’s kind of essential. Braintree is a Chicago, IL based company that is simplifying payments for online businesses. They solve many of the headaches, and they offer transparent pricing that makes it easy for merchants to estimate costs. The best indication that Braintree is offering a great solution for payment processing is their own growth–they ended up at #415 on this year’s Inc. 500 with 895% three-year growth and $9.9 million in revenue.

One thing that is frustrating me about this year’s version of the Inc. 500 is that so many of the companies are very similar to each other–especially the ones that tend to have jobs posted. While seeing the same business model on the list repeatedly should help you identify areas to focus your job search and develop skills, it’s not nearly as interesting. At this point I’m starting to look for the companies that stand out from the crowd. RealSelf is one of those. They are a Seattle, WA based company that is building “the most trusted community around the entire journey one takes with any medical-beauty decision.” Whether you’re looking for a travel destination, restaurant, book, or public restroom (I’m not joking), you can find a multitude of online reviews. There isn’t nearly as much information available about cosmetic surgery and other similar procedures. That’s why RealSelf has been able to grow at a 1,217% rate over the past three years.

Google really nailed it with search advertising. When you know what people are looking for, it’s really easy to show them advertising that they’re likely to respond well to. The promise of social media is that consumers will be targeted with even more relevant ads based on whom they know and what they like. In practice that doesn’t seem to be working out so well. There are similar approaches with far less hype and far more ROI. Just look at Resonate. They are a Reston, VA based company that “has pioneered a new model for using ‘Big Data’ to develop a sophisticated understanding of consumer values, attitudes and beliefs.” They came in at #235 on the Inc. 500 with 1,520% three-year growth to $9.8 million in revenue. They’ve done this by focusing on consumer’s values and belief systems–things like “patriotism, environmentalism, taste for luxury, or interest in innovation.”

On Friday I visited one my Dad’s college friends at his workshop. He makes sails for traditional boats, and he’s been doing it for a long time. He doesn’t get a lot of incoming calls from potential clients (it’s a pretty niche business), but when he does, he almost always makes the sale (no pun intended). It’s because he has developed a process that shows potential customers that he’s undoubtedly the best guy for the job. He does it all by hand (even to the point of writing a personal letter), but it’s essentially automated. He spends about 15 minutes on it every morning, and that’s it. While that approach won’t work in a lot of business, nearly every company can benefit from automating parts of their marketing. Pardot is a company that provides software to do exactly that. They’re based in Atlanta, GA, and they came in at #172 on the Inc. 500 with 2,001% three-year growth and $7.4 million in revenue.

Last week in my write up on the U.S. Association Of Former Members Of Congress, I touched on the idea that our politicians might be more effective after they retire from public service. I think this is especially true for members of Congress who have no term limits and constantly need to worry about being reelected, but I think that presidents face similar pressures to follow the polls. I spend a lot of time meeting and talking with budding entrepreneurs. One thing that I’ve noticed is that people who are starting their first businesses often get too caught up in the administrative details. They want to incorporate, set up contracts, design a logo, get business cards, etc. It’s not that these things aren’t important–it’s just that there are far more important things (like validating your business idea or doing customer research). Still, there’s some legal stuff that absolutely needs to be done. Hiring a lawyer is too expensive, and using a boilerplate won’t quite do the job. What do you do? Go to Rocket Lawyer. They’re a San Francisco, CA based company that is “making legal work easier and more convenient for everyone.” Their online model has helped them reach #72 on the Inc. 500 with 3,672% three-year growth to $14.2 million in revenue. Rocket Lawyer uses automated technology to create custom legal documents for business and personal use. But they don’t just leave you there. Rocket Lawyer members (they charge a monthly fee for access) get “free document reviews” and “questions answered by local attorneys.” Additionally, Rocket Lawyer has “pre-negotiated lower rates with local attorneys” so that customers can save money when they do need more than a document.

Occasionally I come across a company that I’m shocked that I’ve never heard of before. You’d think that after writing about more than 1,700 companies, there wouldn’t be many surprises left. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Just look at Silver Chalice. It’s a Chicago, IL based company that “builds and operates a fast-growing portfolio of high-value digital media businesses in the fields of sports and entertainment.” The company’s Chairman happens to be Jerry Reinsdorf–yes, the same Jerry Reinsdorf who owns the Bulls and White Sox. I love sports. I love tech. I live in Chicago. I should have heard about them at some point, but it seems that Silver Chalice likes to keep a low profile. I can’t really figure out why they’d want to do that, but the last major press coverage that they got was in 2009 right before they publicly launched. Back then the company was described as “an outside company to supplement the team’s core operations” (in reference to the White Sox).

This is a good week for me as a transplanted Chicagoan. Over the weekend I had the Air & Water Show to watch, which is free as long as you’re willing to deal with some crowds. And today the Yankees come into town for a three-game set with the White Sox. I’m going to go to at least one of the games, and that means I’ll try to get a deal on tickets through StubHub at the last minute. I’ve found that no matter how you try to buy tickets for a major event, it’s always kind of a headache. The interfaces to pick seats are terrible, you get slapped with all kinds of fees, and sometimes the tickets disappear before you can buy them. ShowClix is a Pittsburgh, PA based company that provides “simply (fair) ticketing.” They’re aiming to make the ticketing experience better for both the people putting on the events and the people attending them. They may not be an option for this week’s Yankees games, but they are “the preferred ticketing solution for thousands of performing arts theatres, live music venues, and festivals — as well as museums, non-profit fundraisers, nightclubs, even circuses and rodeos.”

The Air & Water Show is happening here in Chicago this weekend. With the Blue Angels buzzing the city and parachuters dropping down in preparation for the real show tomorrow, I’m reminded that a part of me always wanted to be a fighter jet pilot. Unfortunately, I’m 6’3 and near-sighted, so that was never going to happen. The closest that I’m ever going to get is playing MetalStorm: Wingman on my iPad. In case you’ve never played, it’s an awesome fighter jet simulator game. There’s a single player mode that’s pretty fun, and you can also go one-on-one online if you want to get smoked by random middle schoolers (it’s a good ego check). MetalStorm: Wingman, along with Battle Nations and Trade Nations, is produced by Z2Live, which is a Seattle, WA based company that “creates original next-generation, free-to-play, social and multiplayer games for mobile devices.”

Remember when you had to worry about whether a file or program was compatible with your computer’s operating system? These days most people do everything in the web browser, and that means that they can access the same functionality across a multitude of devices. The problem is that building a website for a 30 inch screen is very different from building for a 15 inch screen, and an 11 inch screen, and a 4 inch screen, and so on. Creating excellent user experiences for different platforms is really hard (ODOJ has a responsive design that should look great on any device, but it took a lot of work). Experiences make for the best (and the worst marketing). All of those commercials about transporting Olympic athletes can do nothing to change my opinion after my experience with United last night. They strung me along with delays, their website failed repeatedly, and I spent an hour and a half on the phone to get a flight 24 hours later. There’s nothing like the live experience to shape your brand associations. That’s why Situation Interactive centered their business around it. They “are among the leaders in creating award-winning digital strategies for top entertainment and media brands worldwide.” Obviously the New York, NY (and Los Angeles, CA) based agency focuses on creating amazing experiences–and they tend to do it for clients who are way more exciting and way less likely to make you mad than an airline.

I’m really tempted to start with a lawyer joke today, but I’m not looking for a lawsuit. I know that it can be hard to feel bad for lawyers, but they actually have it tough these days–especially the young ones. The job market has gotten so bad that elite law schools are hiring their own graduates on a large scale with the intent of fudging their after graduation employment rate. While the new grads are getting hit the hardest, the glut of lawyers on the market has an effect on the entire profession. Any lawyer who wants to stay employable needs to continue learning and improving. That’s where Lawline.com comes in. They’re a New York, NY based “provider of Online Continuing Legal Education courses for attorneys across the country.” Their subscriptions are many orders of magnitude cheaper than law school, so getting a positive ROI on education from Lawline.com seems like a sure thing.
Keep on Learning
Lawline.com has thousands of faculty members who have developed courses on a very wide range of topics. Their online CLE (Continuing Legal Education) programs not only allow lawyers to keep learning and get better at their jobs, but they also are sometimes required for lawyers who want to keep their licenses. What’s most interesting is that Lawline.com is that they give away their content for free. Lawyers only have to pay if they want to get credit for the courses they take. I love it when business see reality and don’t try to hold on to a dying business model (too bad lawyers often are the ones obstructing this kind of innovation). Even though Lawline.com is all about the law, you don’t have to be a lawyer to work for them. Their Internships page shows that they have opportunities in:

Lawline.com has done a nice job with their Careers site, and they really push their company culture (they even have a blog about it). It’s paying off as they were ranked 21st in Crain’s Best Places to Work in New York City. They don’t mention anything about whether the internships are paid, but if they follow the law…

There’s no time that sports apparel gets more attention than during the Olympics. There are the crazy “barracuda skin” racing suits for the swimmers, the bejeweled leotards for the gymnasts, and the ever controversial bikinis (or pants and long sleeved shirts if it’s under 60 degrees) for the women’s beach volleyball players. If you look through our archives, you’ll occasionally come across a company that is radically different from when we covered them. If a business can’t rapidly adapt to a changing market, they’re probably going to end up dead (there are a few of those in our archives too). That’s why I’m fascinated by companies that are able to successfully reinvent themselves. Jellyvision is an awesome example. They started out creating children’s films as Learn Television, but they quickly became frustrated by the passivity of a one-way medium, so they moved into interactive software. They released a few titles before landing on a blockbuster called You Don’t Know Jack. You’ve probably played it or heard of it considering that it’s sold more than 4.5 million units. Jellyvision, which is based in Chicago, IL, is still in the games business (Jellyvision Games), but they also decided to share their ability in “employing interactivity to communicate complex subjects” through work as a marketing agency called Jellyvision Labs.

It’s easy to take Google for granted, but the ability to find almost any piece of information in less than a second is pretty extraordinary. Google’s biggest problem is also its biggest strength: depth. It’s easy to get overwhelmed or distracted by all of the information. Sometimes you need a more focused tool–especially in educational settings. That’s what Gooru is all about. They’re a Palo Alto, CA based non-profit organization that is “organizing free, online education resources into searchable collections, accessible from any web or mobile platform.” By combining machine learning technology with human curation, Gooru is able to provide a resource for students to find what they need without the distractions of other search engines.

Sometimes a company knows that they’re on to something, but they can’t quite get it right at first. They have an idea, they build some technology, they hire some people, but the business doesn’t come together. That seems to have been the story with NewsCred for their first two iterations. Now it sounds like the New York, NY based company may have it figured out. After scrapping publisher ranking and a custom online newspaper engine, they’ve moved on to “sourcing and licensing trusted content across a broad range of subjects and perspectives.” Generating quality content is extremely hard. NewsCred allows the brands who need it to get it from the publishers who are experts at creating it.

When people unsubscribe from these e-mails, the biggest complaint that I hear is that the jobs aren’t relevant (have you tried our search engine?). I understand that a single company every day isn’t enough for some people, but if you think our posts are just about the company that we’re covering that day, you’re missing a big part of ODOI’s value. Each day’s profile should be a jumping off point for your job search. So let’s say you really liked Totsy, but you want to be on the West Coast. Did you immediately start looking for competitors closer to where you want to be? If you had, you would have found Zulily, a Seattle, WA based company that offers “daily deals for moms, babies and kids.” It’s a pretty similar business, but it’s a completely different company. Even if you have no interest in either of these companies, you can use them as inspiration to find other interesting companies. I’ve heard rumors that in other countries you can watch the Olympics live and without an insane number of ads. While I’m pretty frustrated by the tape delays, I don’t think the ads are so bad. It’s not the Super Bowl, but I’ve seen some really excellent Olympics focused spots (my favorite is the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III ad with the passing of the torch). I’m not sure which agencies are behind which ads, and I’m not even sure Doner has done any Olympics focused ads, but they certainly work with the kind of companies that might be Olympic sponsors. They’re based in Southfield, MI, and they provide brands with “constant energy, unwavering vigilance and a devoted belief in staying fresh.” Doner is currently doing so for names like Chrysler, Jeep, Chiquita, Arby’s, FIAT, and Minute Maid.

I love having a car. I’m actually surprised at how easy it is to live in a city the size of Chicago with one, but it does come with headaches. Parking has been a nightmare lately because of street work, and there was the time someone pooped in our car’s door handle (I wish I was making this up). While you could use Zipcar or even Uber to get around, the best situation is to have a friend who will let you borrow his or her car whenever you want. But what if your friends are carless or, even worse, you have no friends? That’s where Wheelz comes in. The San Francisco, CA based company (sorry, I know that’s 3 this week) is the AirBnB for cars. Basically it’s peer-to-peer car sharing/renting.

I’ve been pretty lazy in terms of fashion lately. It’s been ridiculously hot in Chicago, and I have no interest in wearing anything but shorts and a t-shirt. I can get away with it because I usually work from home, but if I didn’t I might go to Chictopia for inspiration. I know Chictopia, which is based in San Francisco, CA, sounds like a place that a 14 year old boy circa 1992 would dream of, but it’s actually “the ultimate online destination for trendsetters to be inspired, socialize, and share in fashion.” It’s certainly targeted more towards women than men, but they do have stuff for the guys (it’s chic as is in “sheek” not “chick,” I think). The end goal is to “democratize fashion by giving everyone a voice.”
