At some point in your life, you’ve probably had a conflict – an argument with your parents, siblings, roommates, or others. Humans inherently have conflicting interests, but that doesn’t mean that common ground can’t be found. The idea for today’s post came straight from a One Day, One Job reader. She graduated a few months ago and has been looking for entry-level jobs in event planning since. She told us about one company that she was really excited about, but asked us not to post about it until she was either working for them or had landed another job. Even though we’re talking about internships here, we wanted to hold off on posting. Now that she recently landed a job doing exactly what she wants to do (big congratulations to her), we’re free to tell you about hip consulting group, a boutique event management firm. Their site says that they offer internships to students in marketing, hospitality management, and graphic design, although it doesn’t say when these internships are offered.

Considering that it’s July, hockey probably isn’t the first thing on your mind right now, unless, of course, you’re sweltering in a room without air conditioning dreaming of the cool air inside the rink. The offseason is a time for National Hockey League Teams to address their needs, and that isn’t only about the personnel who wear ice skates. Although many of the NHL Teams have major Summer internship programs, they also need interns during the hockey season. While you may be focused on baseball or the Olympics right now, you should get your mind back to hockey for a bit and try to find an internship with an NHL Team for this coming fall or spring.

My experience with Philadelphia goes about as far as I95, the Philadelphia airport, and what I saw on Boy Meets World. Ok, I also have fond memories of watching the 1993 World Series at a friend’s house because my parents had decided to go without tv for a few years. I think you get the point; I’m not much of a resource when it comes to Philadelphia, but Philly.com is. That’s why they get over a million pageviews every day, which makes them the #1 website for the region.

Yesterday we were doing our daily scan for Fall Internships on Twitter via Summize and came across something cool. XM Satellite Radio has a Twitter account solely for its internship program. Although they only have 7 followers at the moment, XM’s interns are doing something groundbreaking – they’re live micro-blogging their internships with corporate blessing. We are impressed! That was enough to convince us to write about XM’s internships; however, we were doubly impressed when a closer look at their internships site reavealed that XM currently has 31 Fall internships listed.

Yesterday we came across an article that included pictures of one of Earth’s last uncontacted tribes. It’s absolutely incredible to think that there are people out there who have absolutely no idea about what exists in the world outside of their society (you can be sure they don’t need to get internships). Even cooler is the fact that the rest of the world has almost no clue about them. The pictures were taken from an aircraft, which must have left these people totally freaked out. Their reaction was what anyone would do given the circumstances, they started shooting arrows at the plane. The article mentioned a non-profit organization called Survival International which protects these people from the encroachment. We immediately thought internships.

It is no wonder that I decided to play volleyball in college. After all, my parents met on the volleyball court, and my first toy was not a doll or a teddy bear, but it was a mini Molton volleyball too big to even fit in my hands. Upon graduation in a couple of weeks, I will officially be retired from college athletics. As I enter the working world in the fall, for the first time in my life, I will be forced to fit volleyball into my schedule, rather than fitting my schedule around volleyball. Unfortunately, in consulting “on the beach” means working out of the home office, where volleyball is not an approved activity. Had I known that volleyball could have been my work and my play, like it is for the AVP‘s interns, I may have decided on a different career path. It’s too bad One Day, One Internship wasn’t around during my internship search.

There is a constant struggle that almost all non-profits endure – it’s organizing people. Whether they are rounding up volunteers, reaching out to donors, hiring employees, or putting together a leadership team, non-profits rely on well managed groups of people to enact change. The most effective non-profits are the ones that navigate these challenges without a hitch. Many people complain that non-profits are disorganized and suffer from poor leadership, and that is often true; however, The Open Planning Project, a non-profit itself, is hoping to change that by offering a suite of online tools to help other organizations become better organized.

Internships in show business. Bright lights. Movie and television stars. Glitz and glamour. Yeah right! You’re not going to come within 6 miles of a movie star, so you might as well learn something useful and give up on your dream of finding your name in US Weekly. PostWorks (and Orbit Digital, their sister company) is in the entertainment industry, but everything that they do is behind the scenes. Since they specialize in post production work, they’re not even on the wrong end of the camera, they’re nowhere near it (until the film needs to be unloaded and processed, that is). In the end, though, it’s all worth it, right? Your hard work will be part of the finished product, and you’ll know that those movies stars couldn’t look so good without you.

A couple days ago I made a decision that I may regret. I joined Twitter. In case you’ve been too busy having a life, Twitter is a social networking site / time waster that is best explained to college students as a combination of Facebook’s status updates and walls. All messages have to be 140 characters or less, and there’s not much more to it. I was skeptical at first, but after a few days of use, I’m starting to like it (if you want to follow me, you can do so here). I’m especially excited that I found an internship to write about by following ProBlogger webmaster, Darren Rowse, on Twitter. Darren has made an extremely good living off of blogging and also co-founded a blog network called b5media, which is offering the internships. So, score one for Twitter, and if you’re the type of person who might be interested in the internships we’re talking about today, it’s probably in your best interest to get familiar with Twitter as a self-promotion/networking tool. For the rest of you college students who aren’t social media addicts, Twitter is probably just another way to filibuster when you should be studying.
