A lot of companies that we feature are doing something innovative–they’re changing the way things work, and that can provide an amazing learning opportunity for a college student. But sometimes you can learn more from companies that do it the old fashioned way. I hate to say negative things about a company, but when I see the stuff that AmeriMark sells, I think thrift store. They position themselves as offering “a vast selection of quality, value-priced, brand-name merchandise,” so it’s really not far off. They sell “women’s apparel, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, fragrances and health-related merchandise” along with a lot of As Seen on TV products. Maybe I’m wrong, but this stuff doesn’t sell itself (though they do seem to put a really strong emphasis on quality). And that’s why I think Middleburg Heights, OH (Cleveland) based AmeriMark is so interesting. They know how to sell this stuff. They’ve been doing it since 1969, and they’ve used the same approach across both new and old mediums.

Yesterday I came across Inc. Magazine’s 30 Under 30 list of America’s Coolest Young Entrepreneurs. Apparently I wasn’t cool enough this year, but I’ll leave my hard feelings aside because this list is an amazing source for interesting companies with exciting internships. While the list certainly skews towards tech, my favorite from the list is as old school as you can get. It’s a fungus startup–mushrooms to be exact. Most people stick to store bought mushrooms because eating some mushroom that you found growing in your yard could be deadly (or psychedelic), but store bought mushrooms often leave something to be desired–especially when they get slimy. Back to the Roots is an Oakland, CA based company that allows you to enjoy the freshly picked mushroom experience with a product that you can buy in a supermarket.

My dad always tells people that he loves shopping malls because they are full of people who aren’t doing the things that he wants to do (namely fishing). My views aren’t quite so negative, but when I do visit a mall, my goal is to be in and out as quickly as possible. Luckily for General Growth Properties there are millions of people for whom malls are a destination. GGP is a Chicago, IL based real estate trust that owns and operates shopping centers across the U.S. Some of their most notable properties include: Ala Moana Center (Honolulu), Tysons Galleria (D.C.), Glendale Galleria (Los Angeles), and Water Tower Place (Chicago). That’s just the tip of the iceberg though–General Growth Properties owns more than 135 mall properties that combine for more than 140 million square feet of space.

Sometimes a sign is the best marketing. It all started with paintings in caves and piles of rocks placed on trails, and we really haven’t moved too far beyond that. Yes, there has been some innovation in signs (video for instance), but many of the signs that are the most effective at grabbing people’s attention are pretty simple–just look at Burma-Shave or South of the Border. One of the most memorable signs that I’ve driven by is hand painted on rotting wood by some near Syracuse, NY. It ain’t pretty, but it gets its message across. Still, I don’t recommend that you follow that guy’s style guide. Instead you may want to check out BuildASign. They’re an Austin, TX based company that “has reinvented the way people buy signs” by offering an easy online interface for designing a sign and the ability to produce and ship finished products in days or even overnight.

Have you ever had a nasty cut, scrape, or blister that didn’t quite need stitches but needed more than a band-aid? I’ve had plenty, and my go-to remedy is New-Skin. It’s super painful to put on, and it smells terrible, but it does the job. While New-Skin is a great at home solution, it’s not meant for surgical situations (at least as far as I know). There’s a whole class of surgical sealants, and Neomend is an Irvine, CA based company that is innovating in the space with their Progel technology platform. It’s “a resorbable hydrogel with a unique, accessible molecular structure that makes it ideal for development of novel medical devices like surgical sealants and adhesion barriers.” Hopefully you know what that means, because I don’t.

When I was a kid, I was a sucker for infomercials. I would wake up early on Saturday mornings and learn all about amazing products like Colorcoat 2000, Ab Flex, Brown N Crisp, and, my favorite, The Flying Lure. Excluding the latter, these products all solved problems that I didn’t have, but I was still fascinated by them. I wish I could say it was because of my early love for marketing, but I was just a dumb kid who believed all of the outrageous claims. If I really wanted to learn about marketing and selling products on tv, I should have been watching HSN. The St. Petersburg, FL based company has built an amazing business by selling all kinds of things to people who are sitting on their couch. While infomercial hucksters have been burning people with products that don’t work, HSN has been cultivating relationships with loyal customers.

Believe it or not you can build a business finding interesting stuff for other people. That’s essentially what I’ve done, and I’m not even that cool. Maybe that’s why I focused on jobs and internships instead of design, style, travel, technology, culture, food, etc. (though I’ve definitely covered companies with jobs in all of those areas). Cool Hunting is a site that covers all of those areas and more. They “highlight creativity and innovation” and provide inspiration to those who are in search of all that is cool. The site became successful very quickly, and a company called Captain Lucas Inc was built around it in New York, NY. Because Cool Hunting was so successful with advertisers, they also built out an ad network/firm called Largetail.

One of the best things to happen to me when I moved to Chicago was that I found a volleyball meetup group. It was a great way to make new friends, get exercise, and improve my skills. Another was when I stumbled on Jelly Chicago, a co-working group. I really lucked out with both. Finding fun group activities isn’t usually so easy–especially if your interests don’t align with the types of groups that already exist. Lifecrowd is a company that is trying to make social group activities happen more often. They’re based in Santa Monica, CA, and they’ve “developed a community to connect those who want to pursue trying new activities with Hosts who want to share their knowledge or skills with others.”

I’ve read plenty of articles about how technology is making kids dumber. Video games, Facebook, and text messaging are usually the culprits. I’m more interested in how technology is making kids smarter. My expectations for kids who are currently in elementary school are through the roof because of the tools they and their teachers have access to. Wireless Generation is a Brooklyn, NY based company that is at the forefront of education technology. The company was founded by two Rhodes Scholars who “shared a passion for technology and an interest in what it could do for K-12 teachers.” Within ten years they built this passion into a company that was sold for $360 million. That’s what’s cool about the education market–you can feel like you’re doing good and still play in a market with big money.

The job search is the perfect time to work towards forming good habits. Yesterday we talked about that in terms of investing, today we’re going to focus on physical fitness. If you can start a good gym routine now, when you face the stress and time constraints of a job, you’ll be much more likely to keep it up. You’ll be even more likely to stay fit if you end up with an employer that works with MediFit. MediFit is a Florham Park, NJ based company (they have locations all across the country) that collaborates “with clients in the design and management of their community and corporate fitness and wellness programs.” While many companies in the fitness industry have to worry about marketing, sales, and getting members, MediFit works with partners/clients who already have a captive audience. That means MediFit is all about design, management, and operations.

Today is my -1 year anniversary. In other words I’m getting married a year from today (and yes, we’re celebrating that). Amy and I have a wedding planner, and we’ve already made a lot of the big decisions (when/where/band/photographer). In a city like Chicago, you’re not going to get what you want if you don’t book things way in advance. Luckily, we have someone to guide us on these decisions, but if we didn’t we might turn to a resource like WeddingWire. It’s “the category leader in local business reviews (think “Yelp of Weddings”), offering the ability to search, compare and book over 200,000 recently reviewed wedding vendors.” The company is based in Bethesda, MD, and because they’ve been so successful in the wedding market, they’ve also gone after Bar Mitzvahs, Proms, and all kinds of other events.

There are plenty of brand names that we use generically for products even when we’re not using the given brand. A few that come to mind are Kleenex, Band-Aid, Escalator, Zipper, and Yo-yo. Try to name those products without using the brand. It’s easy for the first two, but the last three are pretty tough–that’s why they’ve lost their trademark status due to genericization. Band-Aid and Kleenex have protected their trademarks by aggressively pushing people to use terms like “adhesive bandages” and “facial tissues.” So here’s a test: what would you call the stuff that replaces shoe laces on kids’ shoes? I’m sure “hook-and-loop fastener” came right to mind. Well, that’s the business that Velcro is in. The company is based in Manchester, NH, and since the invention of their hook-and-loop fastener in 1941, they’ve been helping kids keep their shoes on and NASA keep their dinner plates from floating away.

I’m often frustrated by companies that use too many buzzwords. Social media companies can be some of the worst offenders–their business is about being ahead of the curve, so they want to sound like it. Just tell me what you do! That’s why I was refreshed when I ended up on the website for GasPedal, an Austin, TX based social media company that says what they do in big letters on their home page. They “teach businesses to be nicer to you.” They do this by running “fantastic communities,” hosting “thrilling events, and writing “about marketing ideas you can actually use.” There’s also a consulting and training part of the business that I’ll bet is pretty significant.

I’m a big fan of magazine lists. They can be a great tool for your internship search, and I’m not just talking about the “Best Place to Work” lists. One list that you may not think to use but you should is the Forbes list of The World’s Billionaires. Take a look at what the world’s most successful people have done to get where they are today–it might just lead you in some interesting directions. Forbes is a company that is best known for its lists. The New York, NY based publisher goes by the motto “The Capitalist Tool,” though that sounds like something a NATO protester called me this weekend (just kidding). But seriously, when you hear the name Forbes, you think money, right?

Furniture shopping brings out the worst in me. I tend to revert back to my childhood when my sister and I would team up (by fighting of course) to make our parents miserable so that we could leave the furniture store sooner. Luckily, my fiancée loves going furniture shopping with me. She’s found that if she creates conditions for success (making sure that I’m in a good mood and have recently had a meal), I can actually act like a human being at places like Crate and Barrel. In case you’ve never been to a Crate and Barrel, it’s a giant furniture and housewares store that is essentially my worst nightmare. It all started with one store in downtown Chicago, but now Crate and Barrel is headquartered in Northbrook, IL and has more than 170 stores including CB2 and The Land of Nod locations.

I do as much of my shopping online as possible, but that’s because I don’t really enjoy shopping. It’s all about minimizing my time doing something that I don’t want to do. For some people online shopping is great for the opposite reason–it allows them to spend even more time shopping (at work, on the train, walking down the street, on the couch, etc.). The big problem with online shopping is that the experience feels a bit homogenized–you’re typically buying from major retailers or e-commerce companies. Shoptiques is a New York, NY based company that is trying to make online shopping better by bringing boutiques to the web. Why boutiques? Boutiques offer the ultimate shopping experience: “beautiful hard-to-find hand-picked fashion and knowledgeable advice from the owners who know so much about style and how to make you look beautiful.” Boutiques are anything but homogenized, but their business models don’t translate well to the web–at least they didn’t until Shoptiques came along.

There are essentially two completely different jewelry businesses. There’s the high-end business that is centered around gold, platinum, diamonds, and other gemstones (I know all about that having recently bought an engagement ring). Then there’s the fashion focused business that is more about completing an outfit. The latter is where Chloe + Isabel is focusing. They are a New York, NY based startup that targets 18 to 28 year old women with jewelry in the $18 to $200 price range. That’s not all that unique. What is unique is that Chloe + Isabel is approaching this market by combining direct selling with web-based social technology. Essentially they’re bringing affiliate marketing to a group of people who may not even know what affiliate marketing is.

These days it seems that just about everyone claims to be an expert on things like social media and SEO, but very few people have a track record that shows a repeated ability to deliver results. Why is that? Because online marketing is really hard. We see stupid things go viral and think that anyone can do it, but we overlook the fact that getting someone to look at something is very different from getting someone to buy something. Pop Labs is an interactive marketing agency in Houston, TX that is known for getting results. I’m not just talking about for their clients either. Pop Labs nearly tripled their revenue between 2007 and 2010, which shows that what they’re doing works for them as well as for their clients.

Ads make the Internet go ’round. Most of the content that you consume (including what you’re reading right now) wouldn’t be possible without advertising. The problem is that most ads are annoying–they interrupt you from doing what you want to do–so you start to ignore them. As you ignore more and more ads, advertisers are forced to find new ways to catch your attention. Sometimes that leads to ads that are actually interesting, and sometimes it leads to ads that are more interruptive. Spongecell is a New York, NY based company that allows advertisers to “transform standard banner ads into dynamic flash ads with rich media-like functionality.” That may sound more interruptive, but the ads that Spongecell enables are no bigger than a typical banner ad–they just come to life when you hover over them with your cursor.

In college I studied Industrial and Labor Relations, which means that I spent four years focusing on the world of work. The curriculum covered everything from slavery and indentured servitude to unions and the movement of capital to find lower cost labor. The common theme was that the way that we define and think about work is constantly changing. Today’s trend is all about having a flexible workforce–people who can join on for a project form wherever they live and then move on to a new project with someone else. Work Market is a company that “give businesses access to an on-demand scalable work force along with tools to manage three categories of labor: employees, contractors and third parties.” Many businesses in this space focus on actually building the market where labor can find work, but Work Market takes it one step further and offers the software for businesses to build their own market.

I’ve never been on a cruise ship, and I’m not looking to change that any time soon. I realize that cruises are the ultimate vacation for some people, but they’re just not for me (especially after hearing about food poisoning outbreaks and the Costa Concordia disaster). Still, I respect the brilliance of the cruise ship. Travelers can sample a variety of destinations without having to think about logistics or anything else really. When you can combine hospitality, transportation, and gambling all in one, you have pretty good foundation for a business. The second largest cruise company in the world is Royal Caribbean Cruises, which is based in Miami, FL and owns the following cruise lines: Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Pullmantur Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises and CDF Croisières de France. Those all contribute to nearly $7 billion in annual revenue.

I don’t think that I’ve had a frozen dinner since I forced my mom to buy me Kid Cuisine in the early 90s. If I’m going to eat something unhealthy, it should at least taste good, right? Clearly I’m biased against frozen meals (maybe because I consider myself a pretty good cook), but I shouldn’t write them all off as unhealthy and unpalatable. That’s especially true because one the nation’s leading frozen food brands is all vegetarian and mostly organic. Amy’s Kitchen was founded in 1987 by a couple looking for a way to provide for a new baby. They started in their home with a vegetable pot pie, and since then the Petaluma, CA based business has grown to hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.
