One mistake that most college students make is that they focus too much on sexy industries and companies during their internship search. There’s no doubt that following your interests can lead to really good things, but there are so many “boring” industries and businesses that can provide amazing learning opportunities while being surprisingly interesting. They’re a Rockaway, NJ based “digital business-to-business information company” that “has successfully transitioned itself from a print-centric publishing company into digital-centric media organization.” B2B is a space that many young people are barely aware of, but it’s absolutely massive.

I’ll fess up to it… I watch Storage Wars. How can you not enjoy a show where people make exorbitant bids for other people’s junk and then find out whether they won big or overpaid? Isn’t part of the American Dream finding treasure in someone else’s trash? I don’t know where they get the valuations on some of this stuff, but who cares if the “value” of all of the world’s antiques and collectibles is greater than the total amount of money in the world? (I’m making this up, but I’m convinced it’s true.) If you really want to make money from storage units, you’re better off owning them–or helping their owners market them. That’s what SpareFoot. They’re an Austin, TX based company that “has the largest inventory of storage units on the web” and allows you to “search by location, price, unit size and amenities.”

Google is an absolutely amazing company. They’re working on everything from information organization to e-mail to self-driving cars, but from a financial standpoint they’re kind of a one trick pony. 96% of their revenue comes from advertising, and the majority of that comes from search advertising. It’s not really a problem–it just shows what an amazingly dominant business model search advertising is. Unfortunately for the rest of the market, Google owns most of the world’s search advertising inventory. Yahoo! comes in at a distant second. And then there’s adMarketplace, a New York, NY based company that “delivers data-driven performance to the Internet’s leading marketers through the only search syndication platform that adjusts bids by both keyword and traffic source.”

Two days ago when we looked at Spindle, I mentioned that while I don’t find social media particularly valuable anymore, I think that many times it can be extremely helpful for local businesses. I’m getting married in Chicago next year. It’s going to be a pretty big wedding, and Chicago is surprisingly short on non-hotel venues that can handle our numbers. With the help of our wedding planner we visited a bunch of venues and finally chose one that is going to be great. Then we had to do the same thing for the rehearsal dinner. The trouble is that it’s extremely hard to figure out which venues are possibilities. Had I know about Eventup, it would have been a lot easier to get an idea of what’s out there. They are a Santa Monica, CA based startup (with a sales office in Chicago, IL) that offers a “marketplace that connects people who are looking to find and book the perfect venue for their event with venue owners who are looking to rent out their space.” It’s surprising that there isn’t already an established player in this space, but Eventup seems ready to fill the void.

It’s a great time to be a sports fan. The pennant races have already heated up in baseball, and football is here. If there’s ever a time to go to a live, outdoor sporting event, it has to be now while the weather is still beautiful. I usually go to StubHub for tickets, but I’ve been tempted to use a new site called Vivid Seats. They’re a Chicago, IL based company that aims to “to reinvent the ticket purchasing experience.” Beyond sports, they also offer tickets for concerts, theater, and more. While I’ve generally been happy with the StubHub experience in that I can get the tickets that I want for a good price, but the user interface is terrible and the add-on fees seem exorbitant. I haven’t had the chance to try Vivid Seats, but from what it sounds like, the offer a superior ticket buying experience and a total cost that “is almost always the lowest on the web.”

One of the best things about living in a big city like Chicago is that there are seemingly limitless sports leagues. I’ve only played volleyball so far, but I keep telling myself that I’ll do softball, dodgeball, and maybe even basketball. There are some websites that I never intentionally visit, but I always end up visiting anyway. Links to their articles just pop up all over the place–Facebook, Twitter, Google, and even e-mails from friends. Business Insider is one of those sites. I’m not typically a huge fan of their content (maybe because they published an “article” that was derived completely from comments on our post about Bridgewater Associates), but they’re certainly prolific. They cover a wide range of verticals, which makes them a good source for students who want to stay current on news and events in a particular industry. Business Insider is based in New York, NY and was founded in 2007, and since then they’ve been able to drive a ton of traffic. That traffic has helped put Business Insider at #354 on the Inc. 500 with 1,055% three-year growth and $7.7 million in revenue.

One thing that is frustrating me about this year’s version of the Inc. 500 is that so many of the companies are very similar to each other–especially the ones that tend to have jobs posted. While seeing the same business model on the list repeatedly should help you identify areas to focus your job search and develop skills, it’s not nearly as interesting. At this point I’m starting to look for the companies that stand out from the crowd. RealSelf is one of those. They are a Seattle, WA based company that is building “the most trusted community around the entire journey one takes with any medical-beauty decision.” Whether you’re looking for a travel destination, restaurant, book, or public restroom (I’m not joking), you can find a multitude of online reviews. There isn’t nearly as much information available about cosmetic surgery and other similar procedures. That’s why RealSelf has been able to grow at a 1,217% rate over the past three years.

I don’t wear jewelry. As a result, the thing that I’m most nervous about in terms of getting married is having to wear and be responsible for a ring. On Friday I visited one my Dad’s college friends at his workshop. He makes sails for traditional boats, and he’s been doing it for a long time. He doesn’t get a lot of incoming calls from potential clients (it’s a pretty niche business), but when he does, he almost always makes the sale (no pun intended). It’s because he has developed a process that shows potential customers that he’s undoubtedly the best guy for the job. He does it all by hand (even to the point of writing a personal letter), but it’s essentially automated. He spends about 15 minutes on it every morning, and that’s it. While that approach won’t work in a lot of business, nearly every company can benefit from automating parts of their marketing. Pardot is a company that provides software to do exactly that. They’re based in Atlanta, GA, and they came in at #172 on the Inc. 500 with 2,001% three-year growth and $7.4 million in revenue.

I spend a lot of time meeting and talking with budding entrepreneurs. One thing that I’ve noticed is that people who are starting their first businesses often get too caught up in the administrative details. They want to incorporate, set up contracts, design a logo, get business cards, etc. It’s not that these things aren’t important–it’s just that there are far more important things (like validating your business idea or doing customer research). Still, there’s some legal stuff that absolutely needs to be done. Hiring a lawyer is too expensive, and using a boilerplate won’t quite do the job. What do you do? Go to Rocket Lawyer. Rocket Lawyer members (they charge a monthly fee for access) get “free document reviews” and “questions answered by local attorneys.” Additionally, Rocket Lawyer has “pre-negotiated lower rates with local attorneys” so that customers can save money when they do need more than a document.

It’s my favorite time of year again. It has nothing to do with the end of summer–it’s Inc. 5000 time. In case you’re new to this, every year Inc. Magazine publishes a list of the 5,000 fastest growing privately held companies in America. It’s awesome (except for Inc.’s bush league decision to require registration to use the list this year). The Inc. 5000 is an amazing source for job and internship prospects, which is why I usually spend the month after the list is released running through it and looking for the best options for new grads. This year we’re going to start with #7. AdRoll is a San Francisco, CA based advertising startup that specializes in retargeting. Retargeting is showing ads to people based on site’s that they’ve already visited–you’ve probably noticed some ads following you around the web–that’s retargeting. It’s a huge and growing sector of the online ad business, which is why AdRoll has seen 11,082% three-year growth to $12.4 million in annual revenue.

This is a good week for me as a transplanted Chicagoan. Over the weekend I had the Air & Water Show to watch, which is free as long as you’re willing to deal with some crowds. And today the Yankees come into town for a three-game set with the White Sox. I’m going to go to at least one of the games, and that means I’ll try to get a deal on tickets through StubHub at the last minute. I’ve found that no matter how you try to buy tickets for a major event, it’s always kind of a headache. The interfaces to pick seats are terrible, you get slapped with all kinds of fees, and sometimes the tickets disappear before you can buy them. ShowClix is a Pittsburgh, PA based company that provides “simply (fair) ticketing.” They’re aiming to make the ticketing experience better for both the people putting on the events and the people attending them. They may not be an option for this week’s Yankees games, but they are “the preferred ticketing solution for thousands of performing arts theatres, live music venues, and festivals — as well as museums, non-profit fundraisers, nightclubs, even circuses and rodeos.”

I’ve mentioned before that if you want to see me act like a hungry, tired five year old, just take me furniture shopping. I’ve only been banned from one furniture store, but that was nearly 20 years ago, and I’m sure the picture of me taped to the cash register no longer looks like me. Now I know why a lot of stores have treats available for kids (usually the sugar high hits by the time the family is gone). One store that I actually kind of like is Design Within Reach. The spaces are usually pretty small compared to other furniture stores, and they have really unique stuff. Design Within Reach is headquartered in Stamford, CT, but they have stores all across the country (and most of their internships are in stores). I always thought the “within reach” part of the name meant affordable, but stuff at Design Within Reach is pretty expensive (though they’re much lower than a lot of other places). Apparently “within reach” means “authentic modern design” that is “not found elsewhere” and is “in stock.” That last one is a big deal. There’s nothing more frustrating than plunking down a huge amount of money only to hear that your couch will arrive in 3-9 months.

Remember when you had to worry about whether a file or program was compatible with your computer’s operating system? These days most people do everything in the web browser, and that means that they can access the same functionality across a multitude of devices. I’m really tempted to start with a lawyer joke today, but I’m not looking for a lawsuit. I know that it can be hard to feel bad for lawyers, but they actually have it tough these days–especially the young ones. The job market has gotten so bad that elite law schools are hiring their own graduates on a large scale with the intent of fudging their after graduation employment rate. While the new grads are getting hit the hardest, the glut of lawyers on the market has an effect on the entire profession. Any lawyer who wants to stay employable needs to continue learning and improving. That’s where Lawline.com comes in. They’re a New York, NY based “provider of Online Continuing Legal Education courses for attorneys across the country.” Their subscriptions are many orders of magnitude cheaper than law school, so getting a positive ROI on education from Lawline.com seems like a sure thing.
Keep on Learning
Lawline.com has thousands of faculty members who have developed courses on a very wide range of topics. Their online CLE (Continuing Legal Education) programs not only allow lawyers to keep learning and get better at their jobs, but they also are sometimes required for lawyers who want to keep their licenses. What’s most interesting is that Lawline.com is that they give away their content for free. Lawyers only have to pay if they want to get credit for the courses they take. I love it when business see reality and don’t try to hold on to a dying business model (too bad lawyers often are the ones obstructing this kind of innovation). Even though Lawline.com is all about the law, you don’t have to be a lawyer to work for them. Their Internships page shows that they have opportunities in:

Lawline.com has done a nice job with their Careers site, and they really push their company culture (they even have a blog about it). It’s paying off as they were ranked 21st in Crain’s Best Places to Work in New York City. They don’t mention anything about whether the internships are paid, but if they follow the law…

There’s no time that sports apparel gets more attention than during the Olympics. There are the crazy “barracuda skin” racing suits for the swimmers, the bejeweled leotards for the gymnasts, and the ever controversial bikinis (or pants and long sleeved shirts if it’s under 60 degrees) for the women’s beach volleyball players. One might think that every uniform is chosen to maximize physical performance, but there’s research to show that what you wear/how you look affects your mental performance (See: Red is a winning color – GO BIG RED!). If you look through our archives, you’ll occasionally come across a company that is radically different from when we covered them. If a business can’t rapidly adapt to a changing market, they’re probably going to end up dead (there are a few of those in our archives too). That’s why I’m fascinated by companies that are able to successfully reinvent themselves. Jellyvision is an awesome example. They started out creating children’s films as Learn Television, but they quickly became frustrated by the passivity of a one-way medium, so they moved into interactive software. They released a few titles before landing on a blockbuster called You Don’t Know Jack. You’ve probably played it or heard of it considering that it’s sold more than 4.5 million units. Jellyvision, which is based in Chicago, IL, is still in the games business (Jellyvision Games), but they also decided to share their ability in “employing interactivity to communicate complex subjects” through work as a marketing agency called Jellyvision Labs.

Sometimes a company knows that they’re on to something, but they can’t quite get it right at first. They have an idea, they build some technology, they hire some people, but the business doesn’t come together. That seems to have been the story with NewsCred for their first two iterations. Now it sounds like the New York, NY based company may have it figured out. After scrapping publisher ranking and a custom online newspaper engine, they’ve moved on to “sourcing and licensing trusted content across a broad range of subjects and perspectives.” Generating quality content is extremely hard. NewsCred allows the brands who need it to get it from the publishers who are experts at creating it.

This is going to blow your mind. I’ve never had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Peanut butter sandwich, yes. Peanut butter and jelly, no. I don’t have an explanation except that there was this kid at my elementary school who always had jelly on his face and it kind of grossed me out. I’m sure this is a travesty in the eyes of the people at The J.M. Smucker Company. Luckily for the Orrville, OH based company, not having me as a customer has not kept them out of the Fortune 500 (though their grasp on that title is tenuous at #495). While they’re best known for their fruit spreads, they also manufacture and market “peanut butter, shortening and oils, ice cream toppings, sweetened condensed milk, and health and natural foods beverages.” Though publicly traded, The J.M. Smucker Company is still a family company–their CEO is still a Smucker.

I love having a car. I’m actually surprised at how easy it is to live in a city the size of Chicago with one, but it does come with headaches. Parking has been a nightmare lately because of street work, and there was the time someone pooped in our car’s door handle (I wish I was making this up). I’ve been pretty lazy in terms of fashion lately. It’s been ridiculously hot in Chicago, and I have no interest in wearing anything but shorts and a t-shirt. I can get away with it because I usually work from home, but if I didn’t I might go to Chictopia for inspiration. I was never big on locking doors, until my college apartment was broken into over Winter break. Having something stolen from you sucks, but the loss of feeling secure is far worse. Living in Chicago has only made me more wary, though I’m far more worried about walking the streets downtown (the situation is completely out of hand these days) than I am about anything happening to me while I’m at home. I’ve never really considered a security system, but the other day I came across a company called Urban Alarm that takes home security to a new level. They’re based in Washington, DC, and that’s the only market that they operate in. I remember my first experience with online video. I was in middle school, and I would setup my computer to download South Park episodes overnight. The videos were in the RealPlayer format. Now I watch all of the Yankees games live over the Internet in HD quality. We’ve come a long way. Still, I think the sweetspot for online video is short clips that make you laugh. YouTube is probably the best place for that, but Dailymotion, which was started around the same time, is another great site for sharing videos. They’re actually based in Paris, France but also have an office in New York, NY. They offer 34 localized versions of their site and reach “over 110 million unique monthly visitors” who view more than 1.8 billion videos a month.

One of my favorite parts of running this business is the online marketing. There’s something really exciting about coming up with new and better ways to reach more people. I came in knowing nothing about the topic, and I learned it all on the fly–there are essentially no barriers to entry for a college student who wants to get into the field (which is what I basically was 5 years ago). If you want to get into the field, start reading and then start doing (e-mail me at willy@onedayonejob.com if you want more direction on that). While I’m not sure it’s the resource I’d recommend to get started with, eMarketer is a fantastic place to start digging deep into the field. They’re a New York, NY based company that “publishes data, analysis and insights on digital marketing, media and commerce.” They’ve been doing it for more than 10 years, and in that time a lot of big names (Google, MTV, and GM to name a few) have come to trust them as a key resource for the most up to date information.
