Personal finance and the job search go hand in hand. There’s plenty that you can do to get your financial life in order before you start working, but you can’t really start taking control until the paychecks start hitting your bank account (even though that’s probably the most tempting time to lose control). As I’ve learned from Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You To Be Rich, personal financial success is about behavioral change, and changing your behavior is hard. That’s why I was intrigued to learn about a “financial wellness” tool that was designed with the help of behavioral economists. The company behind it is called HelloWallet, and they’re based in Washington, DC. Their goal is to “boost the wealth of workers by democratizing access to honest financial guidance – something only 20 percent of Americans have access to today.”

National Academy for State Health Policy Logo

While it seems to me that most of the debate about healthcare policy happens at the national level, states actually bear a lot of the responsibility on that front. It makes sense in that they’re closer to the people they’re serving, but it also means that there are a lot of separate organizations doing the same things just in different places. The National Academy for State Health Policy is a non-profit that helps “states achieve excellence in health policy and practice” by working with each other. The organization is based in Portland, ME and Washington, DC, and they provide a “forum for constructive work across branches and agencies of state government on critical health issues.” While most functions will be duplicated across states, they’ll each have a slightly different take on health policy. The National Academy for State Health Policy allows these organizations to learn from how other are approaching the same issues.

Smart Design

Most college kitchens are filled with decades old hand-me-down tools (at least mine was). They’re not the best, but they get the job done. That used to be the way that all kitchen tools were. OXO changed that in 1989 with the launch of their Good Grips brand. Their focus on design helped take kitchen tools from a commodity to a product where brand matters and grow from startup to acquisition. A lot of the credit for the success has to be attributed to Oxo’s working with Smart Design, “an award-winning design and innovation consulting firm with offices in New York, San Francisco and Barcelona.” Smart Design has been around since 1980, and in that time they’ve worked “with companies of all sizes and across diverse industries to create human-centered design solutions that delight customers and help companies achieve their business goals.”

Hot Bread Kitchen

Nearly every culture has its own take on bread. From tortillas to bialys to focaccias to baguettes to naan, there are innumerable ways to turn a grain into something a little easier to eat. There is evidence of rudimentary flatbreads from over 30,000 years ago, but we’ve come a long way since then. What I find interesting is that the staple breads from across the world are becoming luxury items here in the U.S. A non-profit that is taking advantage of this trend is Hot Bread Kitchen. They’re based in New York, NY, and they increase “economic security for foreign-born and low-income women and men by opening access to the billion dollar specialty food industry.” How? They sell a multi-ethnic line of breads that are inspired by the people whom they are training for jobs.

Just about three years ago I was working on writing a book (never finished, and I’m glad that I didn’t). I wasn’t making much progress, so I decided that I needed a change of location. I went to some random coffee shop, checked in on Foursquare, and somehow stumbled upon a group of people who were “coworking.” The group is called Jelly Chicago, and I’ve been getting out of the house and coworking with them once a week ever since. It’s a social media success story, as is Loudpixel, a company started by two people I met at Jelly. Loudpixel is a Lansing, MI based (they moved there a couple years ago) “digital consultancy that works with companies and brands to deliver unbiased social media monitoring, measurement and insights research.”

My goal is to help you with career exploration–to introduce you to career opportunities that you didn’t know existed. We’re nearly 2,000 employers in, and we’ve already helped a lot of people land amazing jobs and internships. But in the grand scheme of exploration, finding cool companies to work for just isn’t that impressive. There’s no danger, and there’s almost no chance of finding something truly new. Real explorers are in The Explorers Club, a New York, NY based “international multidisciplinary professional society dedicated to the advancement of field research and the ideal that it is vital to preserve the instinct to explore.” It’s a non-profit that was founded in 1904 and exists to promote “the scientific exploration of land, sea, air, and space by supporting research and education in the physical, natural and biological sciences.”

In a place like New York City, it’s nearly impossible to build something without tearing something else down. That means that a lot of still useful stuff is sent off to the dump while new construction material is shipped in from afar. This is not only wasteful, but it’s also terrible for the environment. Build It Green! NYC is a New York, NY based non-profit that is “working towards reducing the amount of unnecessary construction and demolition (C&D) waste clogging our landfills.” They do this through two stores that make Build It Green! NYC “New York City’s only non-profit retail outlet for salvaged and surplus building materials.”

I’ve mentioned before that I was on the board of a startup non-profit. We were petty clueless and needed all the help that we could get–especially when it came to fundraising. The organization eventually folded, but maybe it wouldn’t have if we had known about the Foundation Center. It’s a New York, NY based non-profit that “connects people who want to change the world to the resources they need to succeed through data, analysis, and training.” While the Internet has changed the way that the Foundation Center works, they’ve been around since 1956, so they have a long history of helping other philanthropic organizations achieve their goals.

I’m a sucker for reality tv. I hope this won’t make you think less of me, but my current favorites include Gold Rush, Bering Sea Gold, Pawn Stars, Hardcore Pawn, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Top Chef, Million Dollar Listing, and Storage Wars. I know I’m not alone because more and more of these shows are being put on the air. We’ve seen reality tv completely change the type of programming that a number of channels run. Bravo, A&E, and The History Channel are prime examples. The latter two are both part of A+E Networks, which is a New York, NY based “global media company with joint ventures and channels all over the world.” Their brands include A&E, Lifetime, HISTORY, LMN, BIO, H2, HISTORY en Español, Crime & Investigation Network, Military HISTORY, Lifetime Real Women, A&E IndieFilms, A+E Networks International, A+E Networks Digital, and A+E Networks Consumer Products. I’m sure you’ve watched at least one of them recently.

I remember a lot of the commercials from my childhood better than the shows that they were aired on. That’s probably because the commercials were designed to ensure that I remember them, while the shows were more about entertaining me in the moment. I’ve been bombarded with commercial messages since I was born, and I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. I’ve learned a lot from commercials–how marketing works and how not to be a sucker for example. I’ve even learned about some great products. My opinion is probably not shared by the folks at Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood, a Boston, MA based non-profit that is working “to reclaim childhood from corporate marketers.”

I buy almost all of my electronics directly from Apple or on Amazon. They have pretty much everything that I ever need, but there’s plenty of stuff that they don’t carry. Whether you’re looking for computer parts, digital cameras, TVs, or a display, Newegg probably has it. They’re a City of Industry, CA based “e-retailer committed to becoming the most loved and trusted marketplace on the web by offering superior shopping experience, rapid delivery, and stellar customer service.” Newegg is way too big to call a niche player, but they certainly cater to the geekier crowd. If you want to build your own computer, they’re the place to buy components. Not only do they have a huge selection of products, but they’ve also built a community of reviewers who can provide in-depth information on their experiences with products they’ve purchased.

Christmas is widely known as “the most wonderful time of the year,” but for many that doesn’t ring true. If there’s any group that deserves to have an joyful holiday season, it’s children. Most kids just want to receive a few gifts and know that someone loves and cares about them. Unfortunately, for millions of children that isn’t a given. Luckily, there are a number of non-profit organizations that help make it happen for kids who may not otherwise have a Merry Christmas. We looked at Toys for Tots last year, and this year we’re going to talk about a program called Angel Tree “that connects parents in prison with their children through the delivery of Christmas gifts.” It’s part of a larger non-profit called Prison Fellowship. The Lansdowne, VA based organization that envisions “a future in which countless prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families, are redeemed, restored, and reconciled through the love and truth of Jesus Christ.”

When I moved to Chicago I joined the board of a startup non-profit. We were a group of twenty somethings with little idea of how to run a non-profit or what being on a board actually meant. Not surprisingly, the non-profit no longer exists. Our board did its best, but we were never really prepared to succeed. We probably could have used the help of Boardsource, a Washington, DC based non-profit that “supports, trains, and educates more than 60,000 nonprofit board leaders from across the country each year.” You can’t just Google “how to be a non-profit board member” and pick it up. Boardsource provides a wide array of resources that help board members serve their organizations more effectively.

Our society is on an endless quest for growth. From the largest corporations to the smallest non-profits, there’s a shared goal of improving the status quo (though the definition of what that means varies widely). But for every problem that growth solves, it seems to unearth a new challenge. There is a constant tradeoff between the speed of growth and control–the faster something grows, the less control you have over it. Sometimes it’s easier to grow fast and clean up the mess later, but that’s rarely the case when it comes to infrastructure. Smart Growth America is a Washington, DC based non-profit organization that believes “smart growth solutions support thriving businesses and jobs, provide more options for how people get around and make it more affordable to live near work and the grocery store.” They’re willing to sacrifice a little speed for more control because they see the long-term benefits of well planned communities.

Maybe I’m making this up, but when I was in middle school, I’m pretty sure that Sam Goody had a list on one of their walls with all of the new CDs that were coming out soon. That list, recommendations from friends, listening to the radio, and watching MTV were how I discovered new music. It worked, but it was risky. Sometimes you’d end up buying an absolutely terrible CD like Pras’ Ghetto Supastar, the album not the song. Today it’s completely different. You can listen before you buy (or keep listening and never buy), and you can get recommendations based on real data. Whether you’re using Spotify, Vevo, MTV, or iheartradio to find or consume music, you’re actually benefiting from The Echo Nest and their big data approach to music. They’re a Somerville, MA based company, and they “provide the largest repository of dynamic music data in the world – over a trillion data points on over 30 million songs — to help application developers build smarter music apps.”

Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress Logo

Do you know what baseball managers and presidents have in common? People think that they have way more control over what happens than they actually do. It’s easy to give someone all of the blame or credit, but it’s almost never that simple. If you’d like to learn more about just how important the President (either the office or any one of the individuals who has held the office) is, you’ll want to read up on the research put out by the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress. They’re a Washington, DC based nonpartisan non-profit “organization that systematically examines past successes and failures of the Presidency and relates its findings to present challenges and opportunities.” They organization started in 1965 as the Library of the Presidential Papers, and took on its current name in 1969.

NORC at the University of Chicago

Now that the election is over, we know where the country stands on choosing a leader. But it’s still not all that clear what the collective wants on individual issues. There’s no doubt that polls guide policy, and that’s why the 2012 NORC Election Survey is important. It “was designed to measure public opinion about important issues the country faces – economic recovery, health care costs, and extreme partisanship,” and it is based on data collected both before and after the election. The survey is conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago (also known as the National Opinion Research Center), which is a Chicago, IL based non-profit organization that aims to “to conduct high-quality social science research in the public interest.” The organization was founded in 1941, and it has done research on a wide range of topics including Children and Youth, Criminal Justice, Economics, Education, Energy, Environment, Health, Human Development, International Development, Poverty, Security, Special Populations, Substance Abuse, and Sustainability.

Every website goes down at some point. Even Facebook and Google have outages. The causes can range from a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy to a mistake by an engineer to too many people trying to use the website at once. Downtime is expensive (except for startups with no revenue), and the most important way to manage downtime is to monitor it. Rigor is an Atlanta, GA based company that provides tools to monitor and improve performance for websites and apps. I use a site called Pingdom to monitor my uptime, and it’s free. For most web site owners, a free or cheap solution is good enough. But as a site gets bigger and faces more complex performance issues, the needs for monitoring and testing increase. That’s the market that Rigor serves.

A lot of people bounce their business or product ideas off of me. It’s fun, but it can also be frustrating because most people can’t see the obvious holes in their thinking. The one thing that I push everybody to do is to validate their ideas. That means talking to customers and getting them to either tell you what they think or, preferably, to actually commit to buying your product. Validation isn’t an easy process whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or a billion dollar brand. Finding potential customers and getting them to give honest feedback is almost never easy. Qualvu is a Lakewood, CO based company that solves this problem (I found out about them from a reader who landed a job with them). They connect “you with your truth, anywhere, at any time, through the power of web and mobile video.” In other words, they’ve developed an online platform that makes the focus group way more flexible, powerful, and affordable.

National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy Logo

Some may describe the non-profit world as slow moving. It’s funny to think that a world filled with progressives isn’t really all that progressive when it comes to its own practices. Things are changing, and more and more organizations being run like startups, but there are bigger picture issues that need to be addressed to help the non-profit world move forward. That’s what the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy does and has been doing for more than 35 years. They’re a Washington, DC based non-profit that serves “as the country’s independent watchdog of foundations.” In other words, they promote “philanthropy that serves the public good, is responsive to people and communities with the least wealth and opportunity, and is held accountable to the highest standards of integrity and openness.”

Project Adventure

I was a total wimp when I was a kid. Despite many opportunities to do ropes courses and other similar challenges, I always sat on the sidelines. To be completely honest, it was because I was chubby and figured that I couldn’t actually complete the courses. I’m now more adventurous, but I still prefer adventure with a functional goal (like climbing down into a gorge to go fly fishing). Project Adventure is a Beverly, MA non-profit organization that offers adventure with a goal, but it’s all about personal and group development. They “seek to expand Adventure-based experiential programming, with the goal of developing responsible individuals, productive organizations and sustainable communities.” They’ve been doing it since 1971, and they keep growing their ability to advance active learning.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation Logo

I grew up in a house next to a post office. This was the ultimate location for a lemonade stand. From 11 AM to about 1:30 PM people would take their lunch breaks and stop by to pick up their mail. They couldn’t resist my cute face and amazing pitch for a nice, cold glass of lemonade. I raked it in, and I hoarded my earnings (and never paid my parents for ingredients). My intent wasn’t nearly as noble as Alex Scott, a 4-year-old who “announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer” in 2000. At the time she was in the middle of a fight against neuroblastoma, and she wanted to do everything that she could to help other kids facing a similar struggle. That lemonade stand grew into a movement called Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which is now a Wynnewood, PA based non-profit. Alex passed away in 2004 at the age of 8 having raised over $1 million to cure pediatric cancers. That’s an amazing accomplishment that becomes even more amazing when you see what her lemonade stand has grown into.

At this time last year I was still playing beach volleyball. This year I’ve already worn gloves. There’s no doubt about it–it’s soup weather. While I’m not really a soup guy, I’m sure a lot of you are excited about this development. It’s nearly impossible to think about soup without thinking about Campbell’s. They have one of the most recognizable brands in the world, but somewhat surprisingly the Campbell Soup Company brand goes well beyond soup. The Camden, NJ based company call itself “the world’s leading maker and marketer of soup,” but they also own brands like Prego, Pace, Pepperidge Farms, Swanson, and V8. In addition to those, they have some major European and Asia Pacific brands. When you add them all up, you get a company that generates over $7 billion in annual revenue.

United States Capitol Historical Society Logo

Chances are that where you live has some sort of historical society. It’s an organization that is devoted to preserving and researching the local history. They almost certainly have some sort of an archive, and they may have a museum. There are all kinds of historical societies out there, but I was still surprised that The Capitol building has its own historical society called… wait for it… the United States Capitol Historical Society. The non-profit organization is quite obviously based in Washington, DC, and it was founded in 1962 and “chartered by Congress to educate the public on the history and heritage of the U.S. Capitol building, its institutions and the people who have served therein.” The organization is not publicly funded, so they get their money from “individual and corporate memberships, gifts, grants and the sale of educational items such as the book, We, the People: The Story of the U.S. Capitol, calendars, tourist memorabilia, videos and books of general interest and academic research.”

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Search Engine Optimization is one of the most valuable things that I’ve learned from running One Day One Job. Search (namely Google) is how people find stuff, and what they find often determines where they spend money. There are very few businesses these days that can afford to completely ignore SEO. And that’s why the Inc. 500 is littered with fast-growing SEO companies. The problem is that a lot of the companies out there seem sketchy at best. I can’t tell you to consider working at a company that does SEO when I can see from their site that they have no idea what they’re doing (or even worse that what they do could be harmful). In SEO and online marketing, quality matters. That’s why I was excited to come across some opportunities at BlueGlass in Tampa, FL. They’re aiming to “change the way companies market themselves online with extraordinary strategies, service and software powered by the best minds in digital marketing,” and I have no doubt that they’ll do it.

I used to be a big proponent of social media, but it keeps getting harder for me to see it as anything but a waste of time. Maybe that’s going a little too far, but I’m at the point where I’m overwhelmed by the endless flow of mostly irrelevant information. I need filters! Depending on what I’m trying to accomplish at a given time, my interest in social content can vary greatly. Spindle is a company that is building “the discovery engine for the social web.” They’re based in Boston, MA and they find “the most relevant and useful social content from shops, restaurants, bars, event venues, museums, art galleries, parks, and other businesses and organizations around you.” It’s only one piece of the puzzle, but when I’m looking for somewhere interesting to go or something fun to do, I’d love to use social data to see what’s out there.

Rubin Museum of Art

When I was a kid I was jealous of the kids who went to one of the other elementary schools in town because they had an awesome carnival. I was kind of a wimp about carnival rides, so the most intense ride that I would go on was called the Himalaya. All it did was spin you around kind of fast. While the painting on the ride was certainly accurate to the name, I’m not sure that it was a very good representation of Himalayan culture. The Rubin Museum of Art in New York, NY is. It’s “a dynamic environment that stimulates learning, promotes understanding, and inspires personal connections to the ideas, cultures, and art of Himalayan Asia.” It also won’t make you nauseous like the ride might.
