Amy and I are heading home from our “minimoon” today. Our “real” honeymoon will come sometime next year, and we’re planning on going to Japan. The goal of the minimoon was to relax and recover after all of the craziness that comes with a big wedding. We spent the past few days at a resort/spa in the desert on the Utah/Arizona border, and it has been incredible. I checked to see if the resort has any jobs, but I struck out. Then I stumbled on another desert resort that has a ton of career opportunities. It’s called Canyon Ranch, and it’s a resort and spa with an “innovative approach to health, wellness and holistic and integrative care.” They got their start in Tucson, AZ, but they have since added locations in Lenox, MA; Miami Beach, FL; Las Vegas, NV, and… on a boat.

In the 80s and early 90s it was popular to foretell that we were only a few years away from having robots ingrained in our daily lives. That obviously didn’t happen. Even with today’s technology, a seemingly sentient robot like Screech from Saved by the Bell’s Kevin is unrealistic, but we’ve made a ton of progress. There are robots that sweep floors, wash floors, clean gutters, clean pools, dispose of bombs, and lots more. iRobot makes robots that do all of those things, and much more. The company is based in Beford, MA and “was founded in 1990 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology roboticists with the vision of making practical robots a reality.” That reality is finally here.

Our country has produced some truly amazing individual success stories. They are names that we all recognize like Carnegie, Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Walton, Buffett, and Gates. Not surprisingly, most of those names have ended up attached to foundations–when you have that much wealth it’s hard not to put it to work doing good. Just look at The Rockefeller Foundation. They are based in New York, NY, and their mission is “to promote the well-being of humanity throughout the world.” The Foundation was incorporated in 1913 with a $35 million gift from John D. Rockefeller Sr. (he added $65 million the next year). More donations and smart investment have led the endowment to grow to over $3 billion today.

When I was a kid, making t-shirts was a big thing. We had fabric markers and some sort of glittery paint in a squeeze bottle. The end result was always a huge mess and a t-shirt that I would be embarrassed to wear. Then there was tie dye, which is even messier and more embarrassing to wear. My mom once had a photo t-shirt made for me, and that was awesome, but there was no way that I could do that on my own. Things have changed. Some focus on a specific need, and others try to do their best to offer a complete range of programs and services. The Educational Alliance is a perfect example of the latter. I used to be on top of all of the latest web technologies. When a new social network or tool came out, I’d figure out how to use it and add it to my repertoire. I can’t keep up any more–there are just too many cloud-based services out there. While you’ll never be able to master all of these technologies, you can get up to speed in about a minute thanks to Grovo. They’re a New York, NY based company that “produces one-minute video lessons covering every change to the world’s most popular websites, mobile apps and online tools.” Grovo’s content is updated in real-time, so when Facebook announces a new feature or a long awaited new iPhone app is released, they’re on it almost immediately. So far they already have more than 3,000 videos covering more than 100 web products.

Traditionally the goal of marketing has been to get someone to take an action at some point in the future, but that has changed a lot over the past decade. I wonder how many great books were never published because major publishing houses didn’t think they would sell enough. Even Harry Potter may have never been published if it weren’t for an 8 year old nagging her dad to get her another chapter. But it’s not always about shortsightedness. Some books are extremely important, but don’t have mass market appeal. That’s why publishers like The New Press exist. Job searching and looking for love can be similarly painful. There’s the fear of rejection, the lack of useful feedback, and the constant pressure to make something happen from family and friends. While there’s no holiday that makes being unemployed feel like being alone on Valentine’s Day, there are plenty of day to day reminders that you need to get a job (hopefully these e-mails are a positive reminder). I think that one of the reasons that people struggle to find both love and jobs is that they try to do it alone. What if you had a few friends to help you along the way? That’s what Grouper is proposing. They’re a New York, NY based dating startup/social club “that sets up drinks between 2 groups of friends.” They don’t even use the word “dating” on their homepage, and I think that’s a brilliant branding decision–it’s all about meeting new people. Just about three years ago I was working on writing a book (never finished, and I’m glad that I didn’t). I wasn’t making much progress, so I decided that I needed a change of location. I went to some random coffee shop, checked in on Foursquare, and somehow stumbled upon a group of people who were “coworking.” The group is called Jelly Chicago, and I’ve been getting out of the house and coworking with them once a week ever since. It’s a social media success story, as is Loudpixel, a company started by two people I met at Jelly. Loudpixel is a Lansing, MI based (they moved there a couple years ago) “digital consultancy that works with companies and brands to deliver unbiased social media monitoring, measurement and insights research.”

My high school had an excellent community service program. We were all supposed to do at least 25 hours per year, so there was a mix of in-school and out-of-school service opportunities. One of the organizations that we worked with was AmeriCares. I can’t for the life of me remember what project we worked on, but I know that I had a t-shirt with their logo on it that ended up covered in paint (that may have been from a completely different service project). Yesterday I heard that Y Combinator is funding its first non-profit. It’s pretty cool to see a for-profit incubator dipping its toes into the non-profit world, but there have been non-profit incubators around for a long time. One of them is Earth Island Institute. They’re a Berkeley, CA based organization that acts as a “hub for grassroots campaigns dedicated to conserving, preserving, and restoring the ecosystems on which our civilization depends.” So far they have incubated over 100 startup environmental projects and helped them get off the ground by providing administrative and financial resources that are essential for early stage non-profits.

If there’s a time of year for candles, this is it. Between Hanukkah, Advent/Christmas Eve, and having the shortest daylight period of the year (at least here in the Northern Hemisphere), we collectively burn through a lot of wax. My family’s Christmas Eve tradition includes a candlelight church service and a lot of candles around the house, though we’re smart enough not to try the candles on the Christmas tree thing (we had a close enough call with a blanket that got too close to the fireplace one year on Christmas Eve). I can’t think of a bigger name in candles than Yankee Candle, so I thought we should take a look at the South Deerfield, MA based candle maker and retailer. The company actually got its start during the Christmas of 1969. Mike Kittredge couldn’t afford to buy his mother a Christmas gift, so he melted down some crayons to make a candle. A neighbor insisted that he sell the candle to her, and Mike used the money to buy enough wax for two candles–one for his mom and one to sell. The business kept growing from there.

There’s about a 70% chance that you found us through Google. That’s by design. I’ve learned that search is by far the best way to reach job seekers, so I’ve invested a ton of time, money, and effort into my SEO strategy. So far I’ve done it mostly on my own (with the help of a few awesome interns), but if I ever get to the point where I need to hire an agency, I’ll look for one that is aligned with the people in the industry whom I trust. SEER Interactive definitely clears that hurdle (I’ve even heard their Founder called “quite brilliant” by one of the best in the industry). SEER Interactive is a Philadelphia, PA based online marketing agency that specializes in SEO, SEM, Analytics, and Conversion Optimization. I actually decided to take a closer look at SEER after I got a link request e-mail that they sent out for one of their clients. I was a total wimp when I was a kid. Despite many opportunities to do ropes courses and other similar challenges, I always sat on the sidelines. To be completely honest, it was because I was chubby and figured that I couldn’t actually complete the courses. I am not a coffee drinker–never have been and never will be. I can’t even stand the smell of it, so it’s hard for me to comprehend how so many people want to start their mornings off with it. I’m going to a wedding this weekend. I’ll wear the same black Bonobos suit that I wear to every wedding. All I have to think about is what tie to wear. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Search Engine Optimization is one of the most valuable things that I’ve learned from running One Day One Job. Search (namely Google) is how people find stuff, and what they find often determines where they spend money. There are very few businesses these days that can afford to completely ignore SEO. And that’s why the Inc. 500 is littered with fast-growing SEO companies. The problem is that a lot of the companies out there seem sketchy at best. I can’t tell you to consider working at a company that does SEO when I can see from their site that they have no idea what they’re doing (or even worse that what they do could be harmful). In SEO and online marketing, quality matters. That’s why I was excited to come across some opportunities at BlueGlass in Tampa, FL. They’re aiming to “change the way companies market themselves online with extraordinary strategies, service and software powered by the best minds in digital marketing,” and I have no doubt that they’ll do it.

Two days ago we took a look at The Nerdery, a company that builds websites and apps for companies who have budgets with a capital B. They’re extremely good at what they do, but they’re not the guys to build your personal website (unless you’re a celebrity). If you’re looking for a do-it-yourself solution that will give you a great look at a really affordable price, then Squarespace might be worth considering. They’re a New York, NY based company that provides “elegant solutions that set new standards for online publishing.” They’ve already helped people create, host, and maintain 1.4 million websites, and they’re just getting started.

I’ve heard rumors that in other countries you can watch the Olympics live and without an insane number of ads. While I’m pretty frustrated by the tape delays, I don’t think the ads are so bad. It’s not the Super Bowl, but I’ve seen some really excellent Olympics focused spots (my favorite is the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III ad with the passing of the torch). I’m not sure which agencies are behind which ads, and I’m not even sure Doner has done any Olympics focused ads, but they certainly work with the kind of companies that might be Olympic sponsors. They’re based in Southfield, MI, and they provide brands with “constant energy, unwavering vigilance and a devoted belief in staying fresh.” Doner is currently doing so for names like Chrysler, Jeep, Chiquita, Arby’s, FIAT, and Minute Maid.

There are some brands that you instantly recognize even though you have no real connection to them. Usually this is a product of lots of advertising over a long period of time. People who don’t drink soda know Pepsi, and people who don’t own cars know GEICO. So how does a women’s lifestyle brand that was only launched in 2004 become iconic to a 27 year old guy whose fashion sense is based on what Bonobos sells? I’m not quite sure how Tory Burch did it, but I’m pretty sure that their big, bold logo has something to do with it. If you’ve ever walked by one of their stores or seen someone wearing Tory Burch, there’s no way that you could have missed who the designer was. Maybe positioning has something to do with it too, as Tory Burch, which is based in New York, NY, calls itself “a luxury lifestyle brand defined by classic American sportswear with an eclectic sensibility and attainable price point.” That sounds like a recipe for success to me.

There are two ways that I like to judge PR and marketing firms. I like to look at the work that they do for their clients, and I like to look at the work they do for themselves. I’m not sure if one is more important than the other, but I think it’s kind of ridiculous if a firm doesn’t do a good job communicating their brand. VSCPR is “an award-winning strategic public relations and digital marketing boutique founded in 2002” that does a fantastic job with their messaging. They’re based in San Francisco, CA with offices in New York, Mumbai, and London. The VSC in their name stands for visibility, strategy, and creativity, and the company calls its people “the pyromaniacs of PR.” Their website certainly exudes all of those things.

Communication is one of the most essential skills in the job search. If you can’t communicate your value to an employer, you won’t get hired. Most people use words to communicate–some do better when they’re spoken and some do better when they’re written. And some do better with pictures. Sometimes a sign is the best marketing. It all started with paintings in caves and piles of rocks placed on trails, and we really haven’t moved too far beyond that. Yes, there has been some innovation in signs (video for instance), but many of the signs that are the most effective at grabbing people’s attention are pretty simple–just look at Burma-Shave or South of the Border. One of the most memorable signs that I’ve driven by is hand painted on rotting wood by some near Syracuse, NY. It ain’t pretty, but it gets its message across. Still, I don’t recommend that you follow that guy’s style guide. Instead you may want to check out BuildASign. They’re an Austin, TX based company that “has reinvented the way people buy signs” by offering an easy online interface for designing a sign and the ability to produce and ship finished products in days or even overnight.
