It’s my favorite time of year again. It has nothing to do with the end of summer–it’s Inc. 5000 time. In case you’re new to this, every year Inc. Magazine publishes a list of the 5,000 fastest growing privately held companies in America. It’s awesome (except for Inc.’s bush league decision to require registration to use the list this year). The Inc. 5000 is an amazing source for job and internship prospects, which is why I usually spend the month after the list is released running through it and looking for the best options for new grads. This year we’re going to start with #7. AdRoll is a San Francisco, CA based advertising startup that specializes in retargeting. Retargeting is showing ads to people based on site’s that they’ve already visited–you’ve probably noticed some ads following you around the web–that’s retargeting. It’s a huge and growing sector of the online ad business, which is why AdRoll has seen 11,082% three-year growth to $12.4 million in annual revenue.

One of the things that I find strangest about American politics is that older people are generally far more worried about the debt situation than young people (even though it’s the older generations that is responsible). At some point we won’t be able to kick the can any farther down the road, and I fear that time will come just as our generation is hitting its prime. It’s an extremely serious issue, but it’s one that is hard to take seriously when you’re young. The Can Kicks Back is an organization that is trying to change that. Though they haven’t launched yet (their website says Fall 2012), the “Millennial-driven campaign to solve America’s fiscal crisis” will be based in Washington, DC. I would have thought that The Can Kicks Back would already be more active considering that the election is barely 2 months away.

Occasionally I come across a company that I’m shocked that I’ve never heard of before. You’d think that after writing about more than 1,700 companies, there wouldn’t be many surprises left. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Just look at Silver Chalice. It’s a Chicago, IL based company that “builds and operates a fast-growing portfolio of high-value digital media businesses in the fields of sports and entertainment.” The company’s Chairman happens to be Jerry Reinsdorf–yes, the same Jerry Reinsdorf who owns the Bulls and White Sox. I love sports. I love tech. I live in Chicago. I should have heard about them at some point, but it seems that Silver Chalice likes to keep a low profile. I can’t really figure out why they’d want to do that, but the last major press coverage that they got was in 2009 right before they publicly launched. Back then the company was described as “an outside company to supplement the team’s core operations” (in reference to the White Sox).

Let’s be honest. Your social media streams aren’t worth much. They may be valuable to your close friends and family (who aren’t even paying to access them), but they’re really just a way for big companies to collect information on you so that they can show you slightly more targeted advertising. It’s a little depressing, but there’s hope. Your social media activity may have an effect on big decisions if the people at Dataminr get their way. They’re a New York, NY based company that is transforming “social media streams into actionable signals for clients in the financial and government sectors.” The goal is to provide “one of the earliest warning systems for market-relevant information, noteworthy events and emerging trends.” You sill won’t be special in the eyes of Dataminr and their clients, but at least you’ll be part of something a little more meaningful than advertising.

I’ve been pretty lazy in terms of fashion lately. It’s been ridiculously hot in Chicago, and I have no interest in wearing anything but shorts and a t-shirt. I can get away with it because I usually work from home, but if I didn’t I might go to Chictopia for inspiration. I know Chictopia, which is based in San Francisco, CA, sounds like a place that a 14 year old boy circa 1992 would dream of, but it’s actually “the ultimate online destination for trendsetters to be inspired, socialize, and share in fashion.” It’s certainly targeted more towards women than men, but they do have stuff for the guys (it’s chic as is in “sheek” not “chick,” I think). The end goal is to “democratize fashion by giving everyone a voice.”

I’ve always had an amazing appreciation for wildlife, but after a week in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, it’s definitely grown. I’m completely amazed by how many species I was able to experience that were at one point on the brink of extinction. While the federal government has done a fantastic job in that particular situation, they’re not able to act in the same way across the world. That’s where organizations like World Wildlife Fund come in. WWF is a Washington, DC non-profit that “has been protecting the future of nature” for the last 50 years. They work in 100 countries and have more than 5 million members across the world. The organization’s vision is “to build a future in which people live in harmony with nature.” That’s a tall task considering our history, but there are certainly signs of hope.

My favorite e-mails in the world are from readers who landed jobs or internships. I get most excited about the ones who found an internship through One Day One Internship, but I also love it when people tell me about awesome companies or organizations that they’re now working for. While I had heard about ONE before, I decided to take a closer look after a reader e-mailed me to tell me that her internship at ONE had turned into a full-time job. ONE is a Washington, DC based “grassroots advocacy and campaigning organization that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa, by raising public awareness and pressuring political leaders to support smart and effective policies and programs that are saving lives, helping to put kids in school and improving futures.” You may know it as the non-profit that Bono founded–they certainly get a lot of press thanks to that connection.

I’ve been hesitant to step into the world of virtual assistants. I like the idea of having people do stuff for me, but I’m not sure what I’d have them do. I just feel like I’ll spend more time explaining to the person how I want something done than it would take for me to do it on my own. I know I’m wrong. I know that having a personal assistant would help me be more productive, which is why I really should try Fancy Hands. They’re a New York, NY based company that has “a team of personal assistants ready to work for you right now.” All of their assistants are U.S. based and “eager and ready to rock.” I’ve heard great things from friends who have used Fancy Hands, so it seems that they’re living up to their marketing copy.

I remember my first experience with online video. I was in middle school, and I would setup my computer to download South Park episodes overnight. The videos were in the RealPlayer format. Now I watch all of the Yankees games live over the Internet in HD quality. We’ve come a long way. Still, I think the sweetspot for online video is short clips that make you laugh. YouTube is probably the best place for that, but Dailymotion, which was started around the same time, is another great site for sharing videos. They’re actually based in Paris, France but also have an office in New York, NY. They offer 34 localized versions of their site and reach “over 110 million unique monthly visitors” who view more than 1.8 billion videos a month.

Have you tried our new internship search engine? Access thousands of company profiles and millions of jobs and internships sorted by relevance.
One of my favorite parts of running this business is the online marketing. There’s something really exciting about coming up with new and better ways to reach more people. I came in knowing nothing about the topic, and I learned it all on the fly–there are essentially no barriers to entry for a college student who wants to get into the field (which is what I basically was 5 years ago). If you want to get into the field, start reading and then start doing (e-mail me at willy@onedayonejob.com if you want more direction on that). While I’m not sure it’s the resource I’d recommend to get started with, eMarketer is a fantastic place to start digging deep into the field. They’re a New York, NY based company that “publishes data, analysis and insights on digital marketing, media and commerce.” They’ve been doing it for more than 10 years, and in that time a lot of big names (Google, MTV, and GM to name a few) have come to trust them as a key resource for the most up to date information.

I’m always surprised by how many young people are skeptical of software based businesses. It’s as if they think that every company that builds software is some social network on top of a social network out of Ryan Howard’s (from The Office) playbook. (Maybe it’s because that’s the kind of software most young people use.) Social networking stuff may get all of the buzz, but I get really excited about the businesses that use new technology to solve old, unsexy problems. Take property management for example. Most people don’t even know what that really means, but if you’re a property manager, you spend a lot of time on routine tasks. How much time and money could you save by automating and streamlining your processes? A lot. That’s why AppFolio was started. They’re a Goleta, CA (Santa Barbara) based company that creates “easy-to-use, web-based software that helps small and mid-sized businesses improve their workflow so they save time and make more money.”

There are two ways that I like to judge PR and marketing firms. I like to look at the work that they do for their clients, and I like to look at the work they do for themselves. I’m not sure if one is more important than the other, but I think it’s kind of ridiculous if a firm doesn’t do a good job communicating their brand. VSCPR is “an award-winning strategic public relations and digital marketing boutique founded in 2002” that does a fantastic job with their messaging. They’re based in San Francisco, CA with offices in New York, Mumbai, and London. The VSC in their name stands for visibility, strategy, and creativity, and the company calls its people “the pyromaniacs of PR.” Their website certainly exudes all of those things.

When my fiancée and I were invited to a wedding in Jackson Hole, I insisted that we go and stay for at least a week. I had been once before when I was about 12, and I’ve been dying to get back. I’m here, and I love it. There’s nothing like waking up and looking out the window to see huge mountains. Since I’m in Jackson, WY, I decided to see if there are any interesting non-profits here with internship opportunities. My search immediately led me to the Teton Science Schools, which is an organization that has “been educating, training, and inspiring students about the natural world” since 1967. They serve people of all ages, and their focus is quite obviously on using the amazing natural surroundings to teach science.

If you’re like me, your phone is your life. It’s not that I use it all the time like some people–it’s just that nearly everything important to me is accessible through my phone. The only possession more vital to my everyday life is my laptop. I back up my phone regularly and use Apple’s Find My iPhone, but I could probably do more to protect my phone and all of the information on it. Lookout Mobile Security is a San Francisco, CA based company that is “dedicated to making the mobile experience safe for everyone.” They offer a complete suite of software and cloud based tools to ensure that your investment in your phone (mostly what you have on it) is as protected as it can possibly be.

Yesterday I came across Inc. Magazine’s 30 Under 30 list of America’s Coolest Young Entrepreneurs. Apparently I wasn’t cool enough this year, but I’ll leave my hard feelings aside because this list is an amazing source for interesting companies with exciting internships. While the list certainly skews towards tech, my favorite from the list is as old school as you can get. It’s a fungus startup–mushrooms to be exact. Most people stick to store bought mushrooms because eating some mushroom that you found growing in your yard could be deadly (or psychedelic), but store bought mushrooms often leave something to be desired–especially when they get slimy. Back to the Roots is an Oakland, CA based company that allows you to enjoy the freshly picked mushroom experience with a product that you can buy in a supermarket.

Sometimes a sign is the best marketing. It all started with paintings in caves and piles of rocks placed on trails, and we really haven’t moved too far beyond that. Yes, there has been some innovation in signs (video for instance), but many of the signs that are the most effective at grabbing people’s attention are pretty simple–just look at Burma-Shave or South of the Border. One of the most memorable signs that I’ve driven by is hand painted on rotting wood by some near Syracuse, NY. It ain’t pretty, but it gets its message across. Still, I don’t recommend that you follow that guy’s style guide. Instead you may want to check out BuildASign. They’re an Austin, TX based company that “has reinvented the way people buy signs” by offering an easy online interface for designing a sign and the ability to produce and ship finished products in days or even overnight.

For most of us hunger means that we’ll be eating soon–it’s a sign from our bodies to walk to the kitchen. That’s why it’s hard to grasp that hunger is still a problem in our communities, especially with obesity becoming such a big problem. Food insecurity might be a better name for today’s version of the problem (though that sounds like when someone feels bad after they eat). Whatever you want to call it, WhyHunger is a New York, NY based non-profit that is trying to fix it. In fifth grade I started playing the drums. By the end of 8th grade my music career was over. I attribute it to changing music tastes, a lack of will to practice, and the fact that the only band that I played with was the school band. I guess I just never wanted to be overshadowed by some guy with a Fender. In case you’re not familiar, Fender is a Scottsdale, AZ based company that manufactures stringed instruments and amplifiers. That’s a big of an understatement, actually. Fender is one of the most storied names in rock ‘n’ roll history and “the world’s leading guitar manufacturer.” Fender got its start in 1946 with an innovative design, and they’ve “grown to be one of the world’s leading marketers, manufacturers, and distributors of musical instruments.”

Guys. If you’re going to land a job, you need pants. And shoes. And shirts. And maybe even a jacket and tie. Looking good is important, which is why you should outfit yourself in Bonobos like I do. Here’s $50 off your first order.
One of my favorite parts about doing what I do is the online marketing side. It’s equal parts arts and science, and it’s a constant challenge to reach new people. More and more businesses are moving their marketing online, and most of them have no idea what they’re doing. This is where local online marketing agencies like C-4 Analytics step in. C-4 is based in Saugus, MA and they offer services ranging from social media strategy to SEO to advertising analytics. C-4 Analytics works in a variety of industries including Automotive, Higher Education, Politics, Real Estate, and Retail. Unfortunately, they don’t name any specific clients or offer any case studies.

One of the best things to happen to me when I moved to Chicago was that I found a volleyball meetup group. It was a great way to make new friends, get exercise, and improve my skills. Another was when I stumbled on Jelly Chicago, a co-working group. I really lucked out with both. Finding fun group activities isn’t usually so easy–especially if your interests don’t align with the types of groups that already exist. Lifecrowd is a company that is trying to make social group activities happen more often. They’re based in Santa Monica, CA, and they’ve “developed a community to connect those who want to pursue trying new activities with Hosts who want to share their knowledge or skills with others.”

After I graduated, I decided to get my finances in order. I cashed out savings bonds, combined bank accounts, and opened a Scottrade account so that I could start investing. This had obvious benefits, but it was also a project for me to work on during my job search. By analyzing investment ideas and managing a (very small) portfolio, I was developing new skills while giving myself something to talk about during job interviews. I highly recommend doing something like this yourself, but if it’s just not for you, you may want to take a look at Betterment. They’re a New York, NY based company that helps “people make smart decisions with their money.” Actually, I’m not sure if that’s a good way to put it. They make investing frictionless and take away any excuse that you’ve been using not to invest (besides the “I have absolutely no money to invest” excuse).

Last week a guy I knew in college e-mailed me looking for some career guidance. I’m happy to help just about anyone as long as they ask pretty specific questions, but I’m especially willing to do whatever I can to help him out. Why? While I thought I was taking a risk by doing a startup after graduation, he’s been flying helicopters in Afghanistan for the Army. It’s easy to forget that there are people like him who are risking their lives every day to protect us. Memorial Day weekend is all about thanking them and remembering those who have lost their lives in the call of duty. That’s why we’re going to take a look at an organization called Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America today. They’re based in New York, NY and Washington, DC, and they are the “country’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

The last time that I was involved with an incubator was in 5th grade when my class was hatching chicks. Between then and when I graduated college, the word incubator was irrelevant to me. Now it’s coming up all the time. I’ve been involved with and interested in startups for the past five or so years, and in that time I’ve seen the idea of the incubator blow up. Incubators typically provide capital, guidance, office space, and much more to help startups get off the ground. Cogo Labs (formerly Adverplex) is a Cambridge, MA based incubator that focuses on growing Boston based web companies. They offer a unique value to their portfolio companies in that they have an in house “platform of proprietary technologies for algorithmic marketing, data mining, and quantitative business analytics.”

My life is about as paperless as it gets. I avoid having to use a printer at all costs. Yet, I still think I know something about the paper and printing industry. It’s not because my mom is a graphic designer who dragged me along to pick up printing jobs when I was a kid. It’s because I watch The Office, obviously. Believe it or not, printing costs are still significant for most companies–“corporations spend $500 per employee annually on printing costs.” PrintEco is a Chicago, IL based company that claims they can cut 17% off of most companies’ printing expenses and help the environment at the same time. When you see how they do it, I think you’ll be pretty impressed.

If you haven’t heard something about the Facebook IPO in the past few days, you must have had a really good weekend. What annoys me about successful startups is all the knockoff attempts. A lot of people think that a good idea is enough to build a business on, so they copy the successes and usually fail miserably despite having a “good idea.” A much better approach is to take inspiration from the big successes and apply what you learn to a more focused niche. Doximity has done exactly that–they’re a social network for doctors and healthcare professionals. The San Mateo, CA based company has picked a great market in that a big part of being a doctor is communicating with other doctors. It’s also a market with amazing monetization possibilities.

Neuroscience is a word that is about as intimidating as astrophysics. Most people have no idea what it means, but they’re pretty sure that its definition is over their head. The truth is that neuroscience is simply the study of the brain and nervous system. That’s not to say it’s a simple science, but it’s a science that covers equipment that we all have. With that said, neuroscience gets a bit complex as it draws from “other fields such as chemistry, computer science, engineering, linguistics, mathematics, medicine and allied disciplines, philosophy, physics, and psychology.” (Here’s the Wikipedia article on Neuroscience.) The Society for Neuroscience is a Washington, DC based non-profit member organization for the scientists and physicians who study the brain and nervous system.

What have you done in the past week to make yourself a better candidate for the jobs that you’ll apply for after you graduate? E-mail me at willy@onedayonejob.com and tell me. Seriously. Developing new skills isn’t just about being better qualified for a job or internship–it’s also about showing employers that you’re constantly trying to better yourself and willing to invest time and money to do so. Companies love people who show a desire to grow into new roles. Luckily, there are more and more companies that offer online education with the purpose of actually teaching you applicable skills, not giving you a worthless piece of paper. One of these companies is Treehouse, which is based in Orlando, FL. Their “goal is to teach Web Design, Web Development and iOS, to everyone in the World who wants to learn.”

I get a ton of PR pitches every day (I just got another one while I was writing this). They typically range from very bad to downright terrible, so I either ignore them or send a nasty reply asking the person to remove me from their list. I checked my e-mail archives, and I’ve never received a pitch from anyone at Sparkpr, but my guess based on their reputation is that they’d actually take the time to send me a decent pitch if it was appropriate. There are essentially two completely different jewelry businesses. There’s the high-end business that is centered around gold, platinum, diamonds, and other gemstones (I know all about that having recently bought an engagement ring). Then there’s the fashion focused business that is more about completing an outfit. The latter is where Chloe + Isabel is focusing. They are a New York, NY based startup that targets 18 to 28 year old women with jewelry in the $18 to $200 price range. That’s not all that unique. What is unique is that Chloe + Isabel is approaching this market by combining direct selling with web-based social technology. Essentially they’re bringing affiliate marketing to a group of people who may not even know what affiliate marketing is.
