I finally had to turn my heat on. I made it through October, but November got me. I like being comfortable, so I don’t worry about keeping the thermostat at 62 or buying energy efficient bulbs. When you don’t spend all that much on energy, it’s not worth putting a lot of effort into reducing your energy consumption. But for large companies and institutions, energy costs can become a huge expense–and that’s when investing in energy efficiency really becomes worthwhile. Five years ago today I launched One Day One Job. Six months earlier I had given up on a job search that was going nowhere and decided to try to find a way to make the job search suck less for college students and grads. I knew a little about HR, a little about how to build a website, and a lot about how to fail at the job search. It took me six months to build something launch-worthy. Five years later I have a website and e-mail list that has reached millions of people. My business is profitable. And most importantly, I’ve helped people land jobs they never would have found without me. I still have a long way to go, but what I’ve done so far is all thanks to some rudimentary coding skills that I developed in middle and high school. Now that the election is over, we know where the country stands on choosing a leader. But it’s still not all that clear what the collective wants on individual issues. There’s no doubt that polls guide policy, and that’s why the 2012 NORC Election Survey is important. It “was designed to measure public opinion about important issues the country faces – economic recovery, health care costs, and extreme partisanship,” and it is based on data collected both before and after the election. The survey is conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago (also known as the National Opinion Research Center), which is a Chicago, IL based non-profit organization that aims to “to conduct high-quality social science research in the public interest.” The organization was founded in 1941, and it has done research on a wide range of topics including Children and Youth, Criminal Justice, Economics, Education, Energy, Environment, Health, Human Development, International Development, Poverty, Security, Special Populations, Substance Abuse, and Sustainability.

I’m consistently amazed by the quality of free educational content online. You can learn about almost anything at a pretty high level from any place you want. Yet so many of us still spend time looking at memes and watching silly YouTube videos. Educational content needs to be entertaining if we’re going to consume it voluntarily on a regular basis, and that’s why TED has grown so dramatically over the last few years. TED is a New York, NY based non-profit “devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading.” The organization got its start in 1984 as a conference series centered around technology, entertainment, and design. That description still applies, but the set of topics has broadened and so has TED’s reach. Now you can view videos all of the best TED talks online for free.

Every website goes down at some point. Even Facebook and Google have outages. The causes can range from a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy to a mistake by an engineer to too many people trying to use the website at once. Downtime is expensive (except for startups with no revenue), and the most important way to manage downtime is to monitor it. Rigor is an Atlanta, GA based company that provides tools to monitor and improve performance for websites and apps. I use a site called Pingdom to monitor my uptime, and it’s free. For most web site owners, a free or cheap solution is good enough. But as a site gets bigger and faces more complex performance issues, the needs for monitoring and testing increase. Two competing marketing campaigns that combined for more a billion dollars in ad spend just came to an end (and the result was maintenance of the status quo). Some would say that any money spent on advertising is wasted, but as someone who makes a living off of advertising, I disagree strongly. I’ll take a wager that the folks at Direct Agents are on my side. Direct Agents is a New York, NY based “digital marketing agency specializing in performance-based digital solutions including lead generation, email marketing, search engine marketing and Facebook advertising.” They must be doing a good job, as they’ve more than doubled their revenue since 2007 (to $34.3 million).

I did a lot of my most valuable learning outside of school. I attended plenty of camps and after school activities, but I also dug holes in my backyard searching for historical artifacts and learned to build websites on my own. Not only were the out of school activities more fun, but many of them helped me develop skills that I still use today. School shouldn’t be the only educational outlet for children, which is why non-profits like Edventure More are so important. I hear from a lot of you that you want a career that makes the world a better place, but I know that some of you just want to make money (even if you’re afraid to admit it). A prop firm is one that doesn’t have any outside investors, so it can focus entirely on generating profits for itself without the worry that investors might want to pull their money out. I’m hoping that all of you made it through Sandy safely and with minimal property damage. It appears to have been quite a storm, and it’s not even done yet. We’re easily looking at billions of dollars of damage, which means that recovery and rebuilding is going to dominate the coming weeks and months for many people and businesses. While this will be an especially difficult time for those who have been directly affected, it will also have a significant effect on businesses and, as a result, job seekers. I don’t have much to base this on, but I predict that it will be slow going for the next few weeks if you’re looking to get hired in any of the affected areas (NYC has already lost two full work days and will probably lose a few more). And then it will be Thanksgiving… and then Christmas (the naturally slow time of year). This won’t affect the internship market as much as it will affect the job market, but it’s still going to be really tough if you’re looking for something now. But out of destruction comes opportunity. Today’s post isn’t as much about The Home Depot, as about what the Atlanta, GA based company represents. For many people they will be the hub of the rebuilding process. The business is positioned to help people in both the best and worst times, and by doing so consistently they’ve grown into one of the biggest companies in the world.

Some may describe the non-profit world as slow moving. It’s funny to think that a world filled with progressives isn’t really all that progressive when it comes to its own practices. Things are changing, and more and more organizations being run like startups, but there are bigger picture issues that need to be addressed to help the non-profit world move forward. That’s what the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy does and has been doing for more than 35 years. They’re a Washington, DC based non-profit that serves “as the country’s independent watchdog of foundations.” In other words, they promote “philanthropy that serves the public good, is responsive to people and communities with the least wealth and opportunity, and is held accountable to the highest standards of integrity and openness.”

One trend that I’ve noticed is that there are a lot of companies popping up that look like digital marketing agencies, but they don’t take on clients. Instead of building out Sales and Account Management teams, these companies focus on building income generating products for themselves. That’s exactly what Restoration Media does. They’re a Tustin, CA based company with a team of “marketers, designers, developers, and project managers” that “turn great ideas into successful brands.” The company made the Inc. 5000 this year with 63% three-year growth to $4 million in revenue. Those numbers aren’t as eye popping as some of the other companies that we featured from the list, but they’re still impressive.

I was at a wedding last night. It served as a reminder that I can’t dance. I still try, but I don’t think that it’s ever going to happen for me. That’s ok–I can leave the dancing to the dancers. Maybe I would have different feelings if I had been involved with Dancewave. They’re a non-profit that “transforms the lives of New York City youth through unique exposure to world-class, pre-professional performing arts training.” Dance is right at the intersection of arts and athletics, which makes it an ideal activity for youth programming–it builds confidence, gets kids active, and introduces them to new cultures.

I grew up in a house next to a post office. This was the ultimate location for a lemonade stand. From 11 AM to about 1:30 PM people would take their lunch breaks and stop by to pick up their mail. They couldn’t resist my cute face and amazing pitch for a nice, cold glass of lemonade. I raked it in, and I hoarded my earnings (and never paid my parents for ingredients). My intent wasn’t nearly as noble as Alex Scott, a 4-year-old who “announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer” in 2000. At the time she was in the middle of a fight against neuroblastoma, and she wanted to do everything that she could to help other kids facing a similar struggle. That lemonade stand grew into a movement called Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which is now a Wynnewood, PA based non-profit. Alex passed away in 2004 at the age of 8 having raised over $1 million to cure pediatric cancers. That’s an amazing accomplishment that becomes even more amazing when you see what her lemonade stand has grown into.

There is almost no better business model than selling subscriptions. You do the hard part of making the sale once, and then you reap the benefits for (hopefully) years to come. Most people think of subscriptions in terms of things like magazines, web sites, and gym memberships, but we’re quickly moving towards a world where many of our purchases are made on a subscription basis. I’ve already subscribed to paper towels and toilet paper on Amazon (though they’re sending them too often right now). Any product that we consume on a somewhat predictable basis should become a subscription. OrderGroove is a company that helps other businesses make that happen. I don’t hide the fact that I’m skeptical of social media marketing. I was an early adopter, and it never really paid off for me. Still, I see tons of major brands investing heavily in social. They’re not stupid, so whether they’re hedging or actually getting a good return, social media marketing is going to keep growing. Since it’s such a new field, it’s a great industry for young people to make a name for themselves. That’s exactly what Aseem Badshah has done. When he was 16 he started a site called ThinkEssay.com “where students could post their schoolwork – such as essays, term papers, class notes, lab reports, and presentations – to provide inspiration and resources for other students.” That’s how he got his social media street cred. After he graduated from the University of Washington in 2010 he started Uptown Treehouse, a Bellevue, WA based (but they appear to be growing a team in Los Angeles) “full service marketing agency that helps brands meet their goals by leveraging social media to connect with current and potential customers.”

I was nearly kicked out of preschool. Some kid bit me, and I responded by biting other kids. I’m not sure what my mom said, but she convinced the school to let me stay. It doesn’t sound like that big of a deal, but it may have been a very important moment in my life. Early education has a huge effect on educational outcomes, so there’s a decent chance that the negative effects of not going to preschool would have followed me through the rest of my life. At this time last year I was still playing beach volleyball. This year I’ve already worn gloves. There’s no doubt about it–it’s soup weather. I can’t tell you how many hours I spent watching infomercials when I was a kid. I’d watch the same ones over and over even though they offered (questionable) solutions to problems that were completely irrelevant to a 9 year old. I have no explanation for why I’d watch them, but it’s a testament to the power of content marketing. When you make your advertisement the main event instead of an interruption, it suddenly becomes way more interesting. An infomercial is both the best and worst example of this. The content isn’t all that compelling, but the marketing message is very direct. Magnet Media is a company that helps brands lean towards the other end of the spectrum. They’re based in New York, NY, and they “specialize in telling the brand’s story by producing and syndicating compelling video and interactive content, using social platforms to help brands share their story, reach and engage their target audiences, and ultimately drive actions that deliver on business results.”

I was lucky enough to spend a week in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks this summer. Our national park system is truly one of our country’s treasures–it’s one thing that the federal government actually seems to do really well. However, our national parks also benefit significantly from the help of volunteers. One organization that has done a lot of great work is American Conservation Experience. When I was growing up, educational toys were pretty lame. I’d beg my mom to take me to Toys ‘R Us and not Learning Express. The one exception was the 130-in-1 Electronic Playground and Learning Center that allowed me to broadcast my own radio station by connecting wires in a particular pattern. It was one of the few “toys” that provided an opportunity to pursue my interest in technology without the help of an adult. Today’s kids have access to way cooler stuff from companies like Orbotix, LittleBits, and Sifteo. Another company that has recently entered the market is Modular Robotics. They’re based in Boulder, CO, and they manufacture Cubelets, “magnetic blocks that can be snapped together to make an endless variety of robots with no programming and no wires.” It sounds a lot like a way more interesting, robotic-themed take on the 130-in-1 kit.

This Gangnam Style craze is kind of ridiculous, right? I originally saw the video in July and found it pretty amusing, but didn’t think much more of it. A couple months later it has over a quarter billion views on YouTube. I’m not sure if the interest will carry over into other Korean entertainment acts, but if it does, DramaFever is extremely well positioned. They are a New York, NY based company that gives “you a better way to find and watch the best TV and movies from around the world.” Their original focus was on Korean dramas, but they are rapidly expanding their offerings of tv shows and movies from Taiwan, China, Singapore and the Philippines. Bollywood films and latin telenovelas will come next. What’s interesting about DramaFever is that they target their content toward English speaking audiences, so it’s not just about giving expats the content that they miss from home.

They’re extremely good at what they do, but they’re not the guys to build your personal website (unless you’re a celebrity). If you’re looking for a do-it-yourself solution that will give you a great look at a really affordable price, then Squarespace might be worth considering. They’re a New York, NY based company that provides “elegant solutions that set new standards for online publishing.” They’ve already helped people create, host, and maintain 1.4 million websites, and they’re just getting started.

I don’t know if being a nerd has ever been cooler than it is now. As technology becomes more approachable, so do the people who make it. It’s even come to the point where kids who are anything but nerds are self-identifying as nerds by posting pictures of themselves wearing glasses on Instagram. They can call themselves whatever they want, but real nerds make stuff. That’s exactly what the nerds at The Nerdery do. It’s a great time to be a sports fan. The pennant races have already heated up in baseball, and football is here. If there’s ever a time to go to a live, outdoor sporting event, it has to be now while the weather is still beautiful. I usually go to StubHub for tickets, but I’ve been tempted to use a new site called Vivid Seats. They’re a Chicago, IL based company that aims to “to reinvent the ticket purchasing experience.” Beyond sports, they also offer tickets for concerts, theater, and more. While I’ve generally been happy with the StubHub experience in that I can get the tickets that I want for a good price, but the user interface is terrible and the add-on fees seem exorbitant. I haven’t had the chance to try Vivid Seats, but from what it sounds like, the offer a superior ticket buying experience and a total cost that “is almost always the lowest on the web.”

One of the best things about living in a big city like Chicago is that there are seemingly limitless sports leagues. There are some websites that I never intentionally visit, but I always end up visiting anyway. Links to their articles just pop up all over the place–Facebook, Twitter, Google, and even e-mails from friends. Business Insider is one of those sites. I’m not typically a huge fan of their content (maybe because they published an “article” that was derived completely from comments on our post about Bridgewater Associates), but they’re certainly prolific. They cover a wide range of verticals, which makes them a good source for students who want to stay current on news and events in a particular industry. Business Insider is based in New York, NY and was founded in 2007, and since then they’ve been able to drive a ton of traffic. That traffic has helped put Business Insider at #354 on the Inc. 500 with 1,055% three-year growth and $7.7 million in revenue.

I don’t wear jewelry. As a result, the thing that I’m most nervous about in terms of getting married is having to wear and be responsible for a ring. There’s a two in three chance that you found out about us from Google. That’s not by luck. Early on I realized that most job seekers don’t know where to look, so they go to search engines. I’ve put in a massive amount of work to ensure that the content that I create turns up when people search for stuff that I have answers for. This is called SEO, and it isn’t some sort of black magic–shortcuts don’t work in the long run. SEO and inbound marketing are about developing great content, organizing the information on your website in a coherent way, and getting other people to share it (mainly through linking). It’s a fascinating field that sometimes gets a bad reputation. I pass up writing about a lot of companies in the SEO industry because they don’t pass my smell test. Slingshot SEO does, and they also happen to have achieved a three-year growth rate of 2,391%–putting them at #136 on the Inc. 500.
