I was nearly kicked out of preschool. Some kid bit me, and I responded by biting other kids. I’m not sure what my mom said, but she convinced the school to let me stay. It doesn’t sound like that big of a deal, but it may have been a very important moment in my life. Early education has a huge effect on educational outcomes, so there’s a decent chance that the negative effects of not going to preschool would have followed me through the rest of my life. The walk from my first apartment in Chicago to my gym used to take me by an office building that had a handful of below ground offices with windows at street level. Nearly every time I walked by, I would see the same guy sitting at his desk playing Solitaire on his computer. I eventually developed a sad story in my head about this guy’s life–his wife left him, he hates his job but has nowhere to go but his office, and Solitaire is his only joy in life. I’m sure it was wildly inaccurate, but I’ll never know. The office is now unoccupied, and my walk to the gym doesn’t go by there anymore anyway. But let’s be honest, everybody can enjoy a little mindless gaming. It’s not something that we’d want to do in full view of everyone else like this guy, but it’s a great way to kill some time or take a break. Google is an absolutely amazing company. They’re working on everything from information organization to e-mail to self-driving cars, but from a financial standpoint they’re kind of a one trick pony. 96% of their revenue comes from advertising, and the majority of that comes from search advertising. It’s not really a problem–it just shows what an amazingly dominant business model search advertising is. Unfortunately for the rest of the market, Google owns most of the world’s search advertising inventory. Yahoo! comes in at a distant second. And then there’s adMarketplace, a New York, NY based company that “delivers data-driven performance to the Internet’s leading marketers through the only search syndication platform that adjusts bids by both keyword and traffic source.”

Two days ago when we looked at Spindle, I mentioned that while I don’t find social media particularly valuable anymore, I think that many times it can be extremely helpful for local businesses. This Gangnam Style craze is kind of ridiculous, right? I originally saw the video in July and found it pretty amusing, but didn’t think much more of it. A couple months later it has over a quarter billion views on YouTube. I’m not sure if the interest will carry over into other Korean entertainment acts, but if it does, DramaFever is extremely well positioned. They are a New York, NY based company that gives “you a better way to find and watch the best TV and movies from around the world.” Their original focus was on Korean dramas, but they are rapidly expanding their offerings of tv shows and movies from Taiwan, China, Singapore and the Philippines. Bollywood films and latin telenovelas will come next. What’s interesting about DramaFever is that they target their content toward English speaking audiences, so it’s not just about giving expats the content that they miss from home.

They’re based in New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA, and they pair “experienced teachers with talented artists to collaborate with schools and community organizations in creating exciting, dynamic classes covering a broad range of academic topics.” That’s actually a kind of boring way to put it. When I was a kid I was jealous of the kids who went to one of the other elementary schools in town because they had an awesome carnival. I was kind of a wimp about carnival rides, so the most intense ride that I would go on was called the Himalaya. All it did was spin you around kind of fast. While the painting on the ride was certainly accurate to the name, I’m not sure that it was a very good representation of Himalayan culture. The Rubin Museum of Art in New York, NY is. I sometimes get embarrassed by how many screens I use at once. I have legitimately browsed Facebook on my phone while I was sitting on the couch watching tv with my laptop on my lap and my iPad tuned into MLB.tv. Just typing that kind of makes me feel like an idiot, but that’s the way it is now. This provides an interesting dilemma for advertisers. When we only had one screen in the house (the tv), they didn’t get 100% of our attention. Now there’s a good chance that we won’t even notice the ad on the channel that we’re watching. Tremor Video is a New York, NY based company that is working hard to increase engagement with video advertising, and one way they’re doing it is by hitting you on every screen you own. Their mission is “to bring the certainty of science to brand marketing,” and it sounds like they’ve developed some pretty cool technology to do that.

They’re extremely good at what they do, but they’re not the guys to build your personal website (unless you’re a celebrity). If you’re looking for a do-it-yourself solution that will give you a great look at a really affordable price, then Squarespace might be worth considering. They’re a New York, NY based company that provides “elegant solutions that set new standards for online publishing.” They’ve already helped people create, host, and maintain 1.4 million websites, and they’re just getting started.

Ahoy, matey! It’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day. I first learned of this bilge-sucking holiday when I was but a wee lad (actually it was freshman year of college from Dave Barry’s syndicated column in my school’s newspaper). One of the best things about living in a big city like Chicago is that there are seemingly limitless sports leagues. I’ve only played volleyball so far, but I keep telling myself that I’ll do softball, dodgeball, and maybe even basketball. There are some websites that I never intentionally visit, but I always end up visiting anyway. Links to their articles just pop up all over the place–Facebook, Twitter, Google, and even e-mails from friends. Business Insider is one of those sites. I’m not typically a huge fan of their content (maybe because they published an “article” that was derived completely from comments on our post about Bridgewater Associates), but they’re certainly prolific. They cover a wide range of verticals, which makes them a good source for students who want to stay current on news and events in a particular industry. Business Insider is based in New York, NY and was founded in 2007, and since then they’ve been able to drive a ton of traffic. That traffic has helped put Business Insider at #354 on the Inc. 500 with 1,055% three-year growth and $7.7 million in revenue.

I grew up along the coast of Long Island Sound and spent a few weeks every summer on Nantucket. As a result I’ve always had a fascination with coastal societies. I just love seeing how the natural environment shapes the way people live. Google really nailed it with search advertising. When you know what people are looking for, it’s really easy to show them advertising that they’re likely to respond well to. The promise of social media is that consumers will be targeted with even more relevant ads based on whom they know and what they like. In practice that doesn’t seem to be working out so well. There are similar approaches with far less hype and far more ROI. Just look at Resonate. They are a Reston, VA based company that “has pioneered a new model for using ‘Big Data’ to develop a sophisticated understanding of consumer values, attitudes and beliefs.” They came in at #235 on the Inc. 500 with 1,520% three-year growth to $9.8 million in revenue. They’ve done this by focusing on consumer’s values and belief systems–things like “patriotism, environmentalism, taste for luxury, or interest in innovation.”

Last week in my write up on the U.S. Association Of Former Members Of Congress, I touched on the idea that our politicians might be more effective after they retire from public service. I think this is especially true for members of Congress who have no term limits and constantly need to worry about being reelected, but I think that presidents face similar pressures to follow the polls. I usually try to eat a high protein, low carb breakfast. Eggs are the perfect answer, but I find eggs completely unpalatable. Instead I’ll usually cobble together a breakfast of bacon or sausage and some fruit, but that isn’t quite enough. Lately I’ve been having Greek yogurt, and I really like it. I haven’t tried Chobani, but they seem to have become the big name in yogurt these days. In fact, they came in at #117 on the Inc. 500 with some really impressive numbers. Their 2,662% three-year growth rate is far more impressive than higher growth rates because the Norwich, NY based company started with $23 million in revenue and grew to $633.9 million in revenue. They could sell a billion dollars in yogurt this year. That’s absolutely ridiculous when you consider that Chobani’s Founder Hamdi Ulukaya started the company because he “stumbled upon a classified ad for a yogurt plant recently closed down by Kraft.”

Over the years I’ve come across quite a few non-profits that use sports as a tool to enact social change. Most of them focus on youth. It makes sense–when you’re young it’s easy to pick up new sports and you stand to gain the most from the positive influences of being on a team. Lately, I’ve started to see a few organizations that are using sports to help end homelessness. A few months ago I wrote about Back On My Feet which “promotes the self-sufficiency of people experiencing homelessness by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem.” Today I came across Street Soccer USA, which is a New York, NY based non-profit that “to get homeless men, women, and youth off the streets, scoring goals on the field, and achieving their goals in life.” It’s a really neat idea, and it seems to be working.

Remember when you had to worry about whether a file or program was compatible with your computer’s operating system? These days most people do everything in the web browser, and that means that they can access the same functionality across a multitude of devices. The problem is that building a website for a 30 inch screen is very different from building for a 15 inch screen, and an 11 inch screen, and a 4 inch screen, and so on. Creating excellent user experiences for different platforms is really hard (ODOJ has a responsive design that should look great on any device, but it took a lot of work). One of the most underrated job/internship search skills is anticipation. You can do fine being reactionary and trolling job postings, but if you really want to elevate your chance of finding success, you need to take things to the next step. That means seeking out opportunities before they become apparent to other people. How do you do this? Look for non-obvious news items that might indicate future opportunities. The Museum of Mathematics in New York, NY provides a perfect example. Experiences make for the best (and the worst marketing). All of those commercials about transporting Olympic athletes can do nothing to change my opinion after my experience with United last night. They strung me along with delays, their website failed repeatedly, and I spent an hour and a half on the phone to get a flight 24 hours later. There’s nothing like the live experience to shape your brand associations. That’s why Situation Interactive centered their business around it. They “are among the leaders in creating award-winning digital strategies for top entertainment and media brands worldwide.” Obviously the New York, NY (and Los Angeles, CA) based agency focuses on creating amazing experiences–and they tend to do it for clients who are way more exciting and way less likely to make you mad than an airline.

I’m really tempted to start with a lawyer joke today, but I’m not looking for a lawsuit. I know that it can be hard to feel bad for lawyers, but they actually have it tough these days–especially the young ones. The job market has gotten so bad that elite law schools are hiring their own graduates on a large scale with the intent of fudging their after graduation employment rate. While the new grads are getting hit the hardest, the glut of lawyers on the market has an effect on the entire profession. Any lawyer who wants to stay employable needs to continue learning and improving. That’s where Lawline.com comes in. They’re a New York, NY based “provider of Online Continuing Legal Education courses for attorneys across the country.” Their subscriptions are many orders of magnitude cheaper than law school, so getting a positive ROI on education from Lawline.com seems like a sure thing.

Lawline.com has thousands of faculty members who have developed courses on a very wide range of topics. Their online CLE (Continuing Legal Education) programs not only allow lawyers to keep learning and get better at their jobs, but they also are sometimes required for lawyers who want to keep their licenses. What’s most interesting is that Lawline.com is that they give away their content for free. Lawyers only have to pay if they want to get credit for the courses they take. I love it when business see reality and don’t try to hold on to a dying business model (too bad lawyers often are the ones obstructing this kind of innovation). Even though Lawline.com is all about the law, you don’t have to be a lawyer to work for them. Their Internships page shows that they have opportunities in:

Lawline.com has done a nice job with their Careers site, and they really push their company culture (they even have a blog about it). It’s paying off as they were ranked 21st in Crain’s Best Places to Work in New York City. They don’t mention anything about whether the internships are paid, but if they follow the law…

Sometimes a company knows that they’re on to something, but they can’t quite get it right at first. They have an idea, they build some technology, they hire some people, but the business doesn’t come together. That seems to have been the story with NewsCred for their first two iterations. Now it sounds like the New York, NY based company may have it figured out. After scrapping publisher ranking and a custom online newspaper engine, they’ve moved on to “sourcing and licensing trusted content across a broad range of subjects and perspectives.” Generating quality content is extremely hard. NewsCred allows the brands who need it to get it from the publishers who are experts at creating it.

I have a good friend who has been subscribed to these e-mails from the start. Yesterday I touted the fact that WWF directs 85% of their expenses towards programming. If you’re like me, you probably wondered where the rest goes. 11% of it goes to Fundraising/Development. That’s a pretty big chunk, but it’s by no means uncommon in the non-profit world. Organizations need money to keep running, and it takes money to raise money (this makes getting a non-profit started a huge task). I’ve been hesitant to step into the world of virtual assistants. I like the idea of having people do stuff for me, but I’m not sure what I’d have them do. I remember my first experience with online video. I was in middle school, and I would setup my computer to download South Park episodes overnight. The videos were in the RealPlayer format. Now I watch all of the Yankees games live over the Internet in HD quality. We’ve come a long way. Still, I think the sweetspot for online video is short clips that make you laugh. YouTube is probably the best place for that, but Dailymotion, which was started around the same time, is another great site for sharing videos. They’re actually based in Paris, France but also have an office in New York, NY. They offer 34 localized versions of their site and reach “over 110 million unique monthly visitors” who view more than 1.8 billion videos a month.
