In a place like New York City, it’s nearly impossible to build something without tearing something else down. That means that a lot of still useful stuff is sent off to the dump while new construction material is shipped in from afar. This is not only wasteful, but it’s also terrible for the environment. Build It Green! NYC is a New York, NY based non-profit that is “working towards reducing the amount of unnecessary construction and demolition (C&D) waste clogging our landfills.” They do this through two stores that make Build It Green! NYC “New York City’s only non-profit retail outlet for salvaged and surplus building materials.”

I’ve mentioned before that I was on the board of a startup non-profit. We were petty clueless and needed all the help that we could get–especially when it came to fundraising. The organization eventually folded, but maybe it wouldn’t have if we had known about the Foundation Center. It’s a New York, NY based non-profit that “connects people who want to change the world to the resources they need to succeed through data, analysis, and training.” While the Internet has changed the way that the Foundation Center works, they’ve been around since 1956, so they have a long history of helping other philanthropic organizations achieve their goals.

I’m a sucker for reality tv. I hope this won’t make you think less of me, but my current favorites include Gold Rush, Bering Sea Gold, Pawn Stars, Hardcore Pawn, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Top Chef, Million Dollar Listing, and Storage Wars. I know I’m not alone because more and more of these shows are being put on the air. We’ve seen reality tv completely change the type of programming that a number of channels run. Bravo, A&E, and The History Channel are prime examples. The latter two are both part of A+E Networks, which is a New York, NY based “global media company with joint ventures and channels all over the world.” Their brands include A&E, Lifetime, HISTORY, LMN, BIO, H2, HISTORY en Español, Crime & Investigation Network, Military HISTORY, Lifetime Real Women, A&E IndieFilms, A+E Networks International, A+E Networks Digital, and A+E Networks Consumer Products. I’m sure you’ve watched at least one of them recently.

When you’re in school, you get a distorted view of what principals do. You see them deal with troublesome students and institute new rules, so you kind of assume that discipline is their main role. As you get older you realize that the job goes much deeper. They’re the CEOs for their schools. They have to manager a team of teachers, work with school boards, communicate with parents, and much more. A good school is often the product of good administrators, which is why a non-profit called New Leaders “develops transformational school leaders and designs effective leadership policies and practices for school systems across the country.” The organization is based in New York, NY and also has locations in 12 urban areas.

UNIQLO

I’ve always wanted to visit Japan. While the country is economically and technologically very similar to the U.S., it seems to be completely different culturally. I might get a chance to go there for my honeymoon (it’s one place that we’re considering), but until then I’ll have to enjoy Japan through its imports to the U.S. One of the latest is UNIQLO, a “brand has evolved from a chain of roadside stores to an international leader in style, quality, and fun.” I’ve never been inside one of their stores, but it seems that they’re about to start popping up all over the place (the first U.S. based store was in New York, NY, which is also where UNIQLO’s U.S. operations are based out of). From what I can tell, UNIQLO is targeting a similar market to American Apparel, though UNIQLO believes that their clothes set them “apart from apparel companies whose sole purpose is the pursuit of fashion trends.”

I haven’t had someone read a book to me in years. The last time that I can remember was my Senior year in high school. We had our annual K-12 holiday assembly, and one of the school’s most beloved teachers read us ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. That’s a great story to be read no matter how old you are. In fact, “reading aloud with children is the single most important activity for helping them become successful readers.” That’s why when you read with a child… Everybody Wins!. Everybody Wins! is a Wellesley, MA based non-profit (with affiliates all across the country) that is aiming to “help bridge the literacy gap.”

Most of the time when we’re browsing the web, we’re really just looking for pictures to click on. There’s a reason that single frame memes and Instagram are two of the hottest online trends right now. Brands are catching on and realizing that a few stock photographs aren’t going to cut it. Some are investing in expensive, high quality photo shoots to show off their products, but others are taking a different approach. They’re crowdsourcing images from customers and fans. Olapic is a New York, NY based company that provides the technology that allows brands to “collect, curate and display high quality photos of” products that their “customers are already posting on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and more.” User generated content is not only free, but it also tells a story in a way that the brand itself can’t.

I went to the same college as both of my parents. There’s no doubt that this made my transition to college easier–I knew what I was getting into, and they knew what I was getting into. The statistics back this up. Students whose parents went to college are far more likely to graduate than first-generation college students. So how do we give these students the advantages and support that typically come with a parent or parents who went to college? New York Needs You is a non-profit that is taking a crack at it. They are aiming to enable “first-generation college students to realize their college and career ambitions” through an intensive fellowship program.

Bonobos is one of my favorite companies that I’ve written up. Right now they’re offering a free $50 gift card to new customers. Their awesome men’s clothing makes a great holiday gift, and it’s the kind of stuff that guys can wear to a new job.

This morning I learned that Audiogalaxy is being acquired by Dropbox. Audiogalaxy was the ultimate way to find and download awesome music back in the day. The experience that it offered back in the early 2000s was pretty remarkable, but they operated in a legal gray area and eventually had to drastically change their service. Today downloading is out and streaming is in. And if you’re streaming music, chances are that you’re using Spotify. The Swedish company launched its product in the US (their US headquarters is in New York, NY) about a year and a half ago and pretty much blew away the competition. While most streaming services offer a “radio” type experience, Spotify allows you to listen to any of their 20 million licensed songs whenever you want.

The Internet is the great equalizer. It’s where upstarts and big brands can go head to head. The big guys still have a massive advantage, but the truth is that transferring a luxury brand online isn’t all that easy. I feel intimidated when I walk into a fancy store, but I don’t even feel anything when I visit the same company’s website. Intimidation may not be what many brands go for, but exclusivity is. I grew up about an hour outside of New York City. My parents would take me in a few times a year, and from those experiences I developed an idea of what big cities are like. It took a while for me to realize that New York is remarkable as cities go. It’s huge. It has a prime geographical location. Its people are diverse in a multitude of ways. It’s filled with wealth, yet more than 20% of its citizens live in poverty. There is no other city in the world like New York, and that’s why the Museum of the City of New York must be a fascinating place to visit. They are a non-profit that explores “the past of this fascinating and particular place for lessons about our future” while celebrating “New York’s heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation.”

Most of you will end up in jobs where what you wear to work is based on looking appropriate. Comfort and style may also be considerations, but in most jobs it’s about looking like you fit in. In most jobs what you wear to work probably won’t affect your performance or safety, but it will if you’re a firefighter, law enforcement officer, first responder, or military service member. Those are jobs where what you wear matters–really matters. LION is a Dayton, OH based company that designs, manufactures, markets, and delivers products “to ensure the health, safety and performance of the first responders who serve our communities and our country.” LION has been owned and operated by the same family since 1898, and I have to imagine that they’ve come a long way over the past 100+ years.

I’ve you’ve ever played on a team that watches game film, you know that what you think you did, what your coach thinks you did, and what you actually did are often three completely different things. The film can’t lie, but absorbing the facts of the film without letting your biases creep in is extremely difficult. If only there were a way to turn game footage into stats. Krossover does that and a lot more. They’re a New York, NY based company that is aiming to “disrupt the current sports content, analytics and technology landscape.” Their platform allows coaches to upload raw video and “get back searchable film, box scores, visualizations, and more.”

Growing up I had a really good friend who was a bad kid. We got along great, but he always found a way to get into trouble. When we were about seven, my Mom told me a secret about him. She told me that he went to “children’s jail” where he only got bread and water. I wasn’t all that gullible, but I believed it because it was totally believable. I was scared straight. What I’ve learned since is that kids don’t go to jail for “being bad,” but there is a cycle of incarceration in some of our communities that starts at a very early ages. Recidivism rates tell us that a young person who incarcerated for the first time is highly likely to be incarcerated again. Friends of Island Academy is a New York, NY based non-profit “center for youth development dedicated to breaking cycles of incarceration.” They work with “adolescents who attend school on Rikers Island every year” to “guide their trajectory to becoming economically independent young adults, connected to their communities in positive way.”

While I built this site to help college students internships at interesting companies, I’ve heard from a few people who use it very differently. One of the most surprising uses was from someone in Corporate Development at a pretty big company–she was using the daily e-mails to source potential acquisitions (though I don’t think any have actually happened). I think that’s pretty cool, but there are certainly better places to find deals. AxialMarket is one of them. They’re a New York, NY based company that “is revolutionizing the capital formation process for private companies.” In other words, they’ve built a marketplace where private companies can find partners for “M&A, capital raises, and debt financings.”

Sometimes it’s all about a name. How could I not take a closer look at an organization called Day One when I was browsing Idealist? Their name doesn’t tell you much about what they do, but it makes sense with a little context. Day One is a non-profit that “partners with New York City youth to end dating abuse and domestic violence through community education, supportive services, legal advocacy and leadership development.” Abuse and domestic violence are issues that affect people of all ages, but teenagers are especially susceptible. When you have little relationship and life experience, how are you supposed to know what is ok and what isn’t? Where do you go for help? How do you get out? Those are all questions that Day One helps teens answer.

I woke up this morning to smell of the donuts that my mom was baking on her new donut making machine. Usually we have waffles and kielbasa, so it was a change from our normal Thanksgiving tradition. The change continued when my mom said, “It’s Thanksgiving, you should write about Stew Leonard’s.” It’s not new for her to present me with ideas, but it is new for me to politely accept them. Stew Leonard’s is a small Norwalk, CT based chain of four grocery stores that are far more than just grocery stores. It’s a very unique place, and a wonderful place to buy all of your Thanksgiving essentials and fixings. I haven’t been there in a long time (it’s a decent drive from my parents’ house), but I have wonderful childhood memories of animatronic produce doing song and dance shows, winning a free ice cream in the checkout line, and a petting zoo.

I can’t remember the last time that I went on a real scavenger hunt–it’s been too long. There’s something really fun about the combination of physical and mental activity. Five years ago today I launched One Day One Job. Six months earlier I had given up on a job search that was going nowhere and decided to try to find a way to make the job search suck less for college students and grads. I knew a little about HR, a little about how to build a website, and a lot about how to fail at the job search. It took me six months to build something launch-worthy. Five years later I have a website and e-mail list that has reached millions of people. My business is profitable. And most importantly, I’ve helped people land jobs they never would have found without me. I still have a long way to go, but what I’ve done so far is all thanks to some rudimentary coding skills that I developed in middle and high school. Being able to build a website or write software opens up a world of opportunity, which is why I think Codecademy is the perfect company to feature today. They’re based in New York, NY, and they are building “a better way for anyone to teach, and learn, how to code.”

I’m consistently amazed by the quality of free educational content online. You can learn about almost anything at a pretty high level from any place you want. Yet so many of us still spend time looking at memes and watching silly YouTube videos. Educational content needs to be entertaining if we’re going to consume it voluntarily on a regular basis, and that’s why TED has grown so dramatically over the last few years. TED is a New York, NY based non-profit “devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading.” The organization got its start in 1984 as a conference series centered around technology, entertainment, and design. That description still applies, but the set of topics has broadened and so has TED’s reach. Now you can view videos all of the best TED talks online for free.

Two competing marketing campaigns that combined for more a billion dollars in ad spend just came to an end (and the result was maintenance of the status quo). Some would say that any money spent on advertising is wasted, but as someone who makes a living off of advertising, I disagree strongly. I’ll take a wager that the folks at Direct Agents are on my side. Direct Agents is a New York, NY based “digital marketing agency specializing in performance-based digital solutions including lead generation, email marketing, search engine marketing and Facebook advertising.” They must be doing a good job, as they’ve more than doubled their revenue since 2007 (to $34.3 million).

Happy Election Day! I’m not going to scold you to vote today because I find that insufferable. Whether you vote is as much a personal choice as whom you vote for. I know plenty of people take politics seriously, but in a lot of ways it’s a spectator sport for people who don’t like sports. You cheer for your guy or girl. You’re jubilant when he or she wins or you’re crushed when he or she loses. WordPress is the best blogging platform and WP Engine is the best WordPress host out there (we use them for ODOJ and ODOI). Right now AppSumo has an unbelievable deal for a year of WP Engine hosting for $99 (usually $348, and worth it).

Yesterday I went shopping at Whole Foods. I bought a bunch of produce that I’m sure was shipped in from all over the world–they aren’t growing strawberries around here this time of year. While I love being able to eat out of season fruits and vegetables, I realize that I’m often paying more to get lower quality food. We’ve certainly seen a movement towards more locally grown food, but even a Michigan cherry has to travel 100s of miles to get to me in Chicago. What if food only had to moved downstairs to get to you at the supermarket? That’s what BrightFarms is a New York, NY based company that is trying to accomplish this. They design, finance, build, and operate “hydroponic greenhouse farms at, or near, supermarkets, eliminating time, distance and cost from the food supply chain.” They take on almost all of the risk and only require the supermarket to guarantee that they’ll buy the output.

Sandy brought Mischief Night a night early, and now a lot of towns and cities on the East Coast are postponing Halloween for a few days, but I’m sure most of you are still celebrating today. I kind of hate adult Halloween–when you take away the trick-or-treating, it loses its allure. And since 28 year olds get the police called on them if they go door to door asking for candy, I haven’t dressed up in years. But I still love seeing what other people dress up as, so I’m hoping you bought something from Rubie’s Costume Co.. They’re a Richmond Hill, NY based company that considers itself “the leading innovator in the Halloween industry.” For the last 60 years they’ve been designing and manufacturing all kinds of awesome costumes. I was at a wedding last night. It served as a reminder that I can’t dance. I still try, but I don’t think that it’s ever going to happen for me. That’s ok–I can leave the dancing to the dancers. Maybe I would have different feelings if I had been involved with Dancewave. They’re a non-profit that “transforms the lives of New York City youth through unique exposure to world-class, pre-professional performing arts training.” Dance is right at the intersection of arts and athletics, which makes it an ideal activity for youth programming–it builds confidence, gets kids active, and introduces them to new cultures.
