You have to love a company whose founder is willing to admit he was wrong. Ahmet Ertegun, the guy who started Atlantic Records, once said, “I honestly never imagined I would be able to make a living doing something that was so much fun. I am very glad I was wrong.” Things may have changed at Atlantic Records – rhythm & blues, rock and roll, and jazz have certainly given way to hip hop, punk, and pop in terms of popularity, but you still have to imagine that it’s unbelievably fun to work with the biggest names in music. Atlantic’s artist list is ridiculously impressive with something for nearly everyone.

Do you have an iPhone yet? Maybe that’s an obnoxious question, but it’s getting less and less obnoxious as software developers continue to push out amazing applications. The iPhone is adding serious productivity tools in addition to the obvious entertainment capabilities in “the best iPod that Apple has ever made.” We may even be reaching the point where you can call an iPhone purchase a capital investment without cracking a smile. Apple is largely responsible for the iPhone’s success to this point, but it’s the 3rd party software developers who are taking the iPhone’s popularity to the next level. Pinch Media is a company that helps these iPhone developers grow their businesses. They’re doing so through analytics and advertising software that they’ve created for iPhone developers, but Pinch Media is also sitting down with developers and helping them determine when advertising makes sense, and when it doesn’t. Pinch Media’s business is all about helping other people make the most out of what they do best – the development of great iPhone applications.

We’re really excited to be telling you about internships with DailyCandy today! They happen to have awesome copywriters, so we’re going to use some copy from the DailyCandy Media Kit to tell you what they’re all about.
DailyCandy, a free, daily e-mail newsletter and website, is the insider’s guide to what’s hot, new, and undiscovered — from fashion and style to gadgets, travel, beauty, and more. As useful as it is entertaining, it’s like getting an e-mail from your clever, unpredictable, and totally in-the-know best friend. The one who knows about secret beauty treatments, must-have jeans, hot new restaurants — and always shares the scoop. DailyCandy is the creation of journalist Dany Levy, who, in 2000, found herself frustrated by the limits of magazine lead times. She developed a new, immediate way to share information while it was still fresh and actionable with an affluent, influential female audience.

I was in Quebec City last week with my family to celebrate my Dad’s 60th birthday, and after a delicious chocolate croissant my Mom, Dad, and I started walking down the tourist-filled streets. My Mom stopped to look into the Crocs store, and 45 minutes later my Dad and I were still standing outside. I’m still bitter about that experience, so I’m going to call my Mom out while I tell you about internships with Coutorture. You’ll understand why this is relevant when you read Coutorture’s self description.
In case you have been living in a place where Crocs are considered chic, Coutorture is an online publication and community of over 250 editorially-selected fashion, beauty, perfume, accessory and streetwear blogs.
Hey Mom, check out Coutorture – it might do you some good. All you fashion loving internship searchers should check them out too.

Despite what their name might make you think, Ruder Finn was not founded by someone from Finland with bad manners. They are actually a family-owned public relations firm that was founded in 1948 by David Finn and Wlliam Ruder. Ruder Finn has four specialties – Health & Wellness, Global Connectivity, Corporate & Public Trust, and Life & Style – with many areas of focus within those specialties. The firm’s first client was Perry Como, who was followed by a list of other celebrities; however, Ruder Finn represents more than just celebrities. They work with many major corporations, the United Nations, and they even represented the Bosniaks and the Croats in the Yugoslav Wars. Yes, warring nations choose Ruder Finn to manage their PR – that’s impressive, albeit a bit strange.

We just found two really great websites. The first is CollegeCandy.com, whose internships we are going to talk about today. The second is Ed 2010 which guided us to CollegeCandy’s internships. It’s “a community of young magazine editors and magazine-editor wannabes who want to learn more about the industry so we can fulfill our dreams of landing top editing and writing positions in the the magazine industry” (Ed: someone really needs to edit that description from their About page). Anyway, CollegeCandy is “a website written for college women, by college women,” which may seem like it precludes guys from interning with them, but who knows?

To be honest, I’m not a theater guy. I’ve been known to fall asleep in the middle of plays, so I’m probably not the best person to tell you all about the Manhattan Theatre Cub, but I do know that they have a great internship program. The Manhattan Theatre Club is “one of the only institutions in the U.S. solely dedicated to producing new plays and musicals.” They were founded in 1970, and now MTC, a non-profit, produces 7 plays a year for its subscriber base of 20,000 in Broadway’s recently restored Biltmore Theatre on West 47th Street and at the historic New York City Center complex on West 55th Street.

Considering that it’s July, hockey probably isn’t the first thing on your mind right now, unless, of course, you’re sweltering in a room without air conditioning dreaming of the cool air inside the rink. The offseason is a time for National Hockey League Teams to address their needs, and that isn’t only about the personnel who wear ice skates. Although many of the NHL Teams have major Summer internship programs, they also need interns during the hockey season. While you may be focused on baseball or the Olympics right now, you should get your mind back to hockey for a bit and try to find an internship with an NHL Team for this coming fall or spring.

You would think that a non-profit organization named The Tank would be some new age, trendy think tank – a 20 something’s take on a policy institute. The Tank is new and trendy, but it’s about as far away from research and advocacy as you can get. “The Tank is a space for performing and visual arts emphasizing new work by emerging performers, designers, writers, directors and producers.” The Tank is mainly centered around performing arts such as comedy, dance, film, music, multimedia, and theater. Major events that they put on include the Blip Festival and the Bent Festival, while they also put on smaller scale events every week.

If you’ve spent any time in New York City on a 100 degree day, you know it’s not a good place for your lungs. The air is thick and hard to breathe, the smell of the streets is downright disgusting, and the only respite is when you walk by the occasional open door of an establishment that has its air conditioning pumped up to the max. No outdoors loving kid would ever want to spend an entire summer there – especially if that kid has asthma or other pulmonary problems (which are much more frequent for city children). That’s why The Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations in the country to more than 1.7 million children from disadvantaged communities in New York City since 1877.

Yesterday we were doing our daily scan for Fall Internships on Twitter via Summize and came across something cool. XM Satellite Radio has a Twitter account solely for its internship program. Although they only have 7 followers at the moment, XM’s interns are doing something groundbreaking – they’re live micro-blogging their internships with corporate blessing. We are impressed! That was enough to convince us to write about XM’s internships; however, we were doubly impressed when a closer look at their internships site reavealed that XM currently has 31 Fall internships listed.

Despite the fact that L’Occitane has a tab for Men on their website, I have to admit that I’ve never used their products. When it comes to fragrance, skin care, body & hands, bath & shower, hair care, etc. I’m more interested getting the job done than enjoying the experience. I know that there are plenty of men (and even more women) who have a very different philosophy when it comes to these types of products, so I imagine that an internship with L’Occitane would be a pretty cool thing for a lot of you.

Do you love fashion? Do you enjoy being around beautiful people? Are you trying to date a model? These are all reasons that you might want to intern for Ford Models. Some of these reasons are more legitimate than others, but from what we gather, you need to be really serious about the modeling industry to land an internship with Ford Models. Competition is fierce for the limited spots they have, and finding information on how to land an internship with Ford Models is pretty tough. We’ve done a bunch of research, and we think we’ve got most of the details figured out. So if you’re ready to give up that dream of being a model yourself, then maybe interning at a modeling agency will be what you need to plan your new direction in life.

Do you start every day with Good Morning America? Do you think that the Today Show is the essence of everything that is evil in the world? Well, then you sound perfect for an internship with ABC. Since we had so much fun writing about internships for the literary minded yesterday, we’re going to do it again today. If you are a book lover, the type who entered his or her college’s book collection contest – the type who has a multi-page Amazon wishlist (yes, I linked to mine so you can buy me a gift), then an internship in publishing is quite possibly a dream come true. Penguin Group offers internships year round, but they make the information about their internships a bit hard to find. We’ve dug up all we can find, so that you don’t have to wander around their site looking for information on how to apply.

Poets & Writers is an organization for creative writers, by creative writers, and it provides a wealth of information and resources that not only help individual creative writers, but also improves the state of modern literature as a whole. We can appreciate that, since our daily posts about internships are a key part of modern American literature (yes, we’re kidding). In fact, Poets & Writers is the country’s largest non-profit organization that serves creative writers. They offer opportunities for writers to connect with each other and funding for “writers who give readings or conduct writing workshops.” Poets & Writers also acts as a resource and clearinghouse for information that creative writers will find valuable. They “compile resources with real value to writers,” while eliminating all the junk that might not seem so bad at first. Isn’t it nice to have someone digest information for you and then spit it back to you after they’ve given it a good once, twice, or three times over? Poets & Writers shares this information through their website and their magazine.

Sometimes stories are too good not to repeat. “The Birth of a Shoe Company” as told by Kenneth Cole is one of them.
Twenty years ago, I wanted to open a shoe company with limited money. From experience I knew one had to get in quickly because so often new companies run out of cash flow before they get the chance to conduct business. I also knew it was easier to get credit from factories in Europe who needed the business than from American banks that didn’t. So I lined up the factories, went to Europe, designed a collection of shoes, and returned to the states to sell them.
At the time, a shoe company had two options. You could get a room at the Hilton and become 1 of about 1100 shoe companies selling their goods. This didn’t provide the identity or image I felt necessary for a new company, and it cost a lot more money than I had to spend. The other way was to do what the big companies do and get a fancy showroom in Midtown Manhattan not far from the Hilton. More identity, much more money too.
I had an idea.

There are a lot of ways to get Fall internships. You can apply blindly. You can try your hand at networking. You can find great internships here. You can even bid on internships in auctions. Yes, that’s right, parents are now buying their kids internships at auction. Today we will be talking about auctions and internships, but Christie’s is not auctioning off their internships. They must maintain their aura of international glamour, and to besmirch their name by selling internships to the highest bidder would not be wise. Founded in 1766, Christie’s is now the “world’s leading art business with global auction sales in 2007 that totaled $6.3 billion.”

This is our last Summer internship post for a while. We’ll be taking a couple weeks off to rejuvenate and find great Fall internship opportunities. We will publish a post tomorrow that will provide resources for a last minute internships search, so if you’re still hunting, we won’t completely abandon you. For our last Summer internship posting, we’ve chosen a non-profit organization founded by Bette Midler, yes, she of Hocus Pocus fame. We wanted to take the opportunity to make some jokes about a celebrity do-gooder, but we’re actually going to restrain ourselves because we’re really impressed by the New York Restoration Project and the work it does.

If you’re still looking for a Summer internship and happen to be fascinated by Japanese culture, we have found some perfect opportunities for you. The Japan Society is a non-profit organization that is “the premier producer of high-quality content on Japan for the United States.” Why would a non-profit produce content about another country and culture? To increase understanding and open dialogue. The Japan Society was founded in 1907 and has been promoting exchange and collaboration since then. The Japan Society’s website is gorgeous and filled with information, so we’re going to send you over there to learn more about the organization’s mission and goals.

Ok, we’re going to stick it out for one more week on the Summer internship front. We know that there are still quite a few of you out there who haven’t landed an internship yet, but it’s getting really late. After this week, we’re planning to take two weeks off from writing about internships to recharge and reload (read: go fishing). When we come back, we will shift our focus to Fall internships. Gotta start planning early for those! That’s our plan. If you have a problem with it, leave a comment or contact us and tell us what you’d like to see us do. If you really want us to keep looking for Summer internships, we’ll see if we can stick it out longer. Now that the administrative stuff is out of the way, let’s talk about the Scripps Networks. They include HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, Fine Living, and GAC, and they appear to have all kinds of Summer internships that are still available.

One year, my cousin gave me a subscription to MAD Magazine for my birthday. I had never read an issue before, but I definitely recognized their icon Alfred E. Neuman. I didn’t think that I’d get that into it, but every month I’d look forward to getting the latest issue in the mail. Most of the jokes probably went over my head, because I was about 12 years old at the time, but I’d sit there and read and laugh. The only way you’re going to understand what MAD is all about is to pick up an issue, so head out to your nearest magazine rack and get one if you’d like to put your sense of humor to work this summer.

When you’re in a new place, like a city where you’re interning for the summer, you need help finding your way around. Things like restaurants, hotels (for your parents when they visit), nightlife, movies, music, golf, shopping and other entertainment resources can be difficult to figure out. There are a lot of reviews online, but the quality of such reviews is often questionable. You never know who is writing them and what their personal tastes are. That’s why resources like Zagat are so essential to making the most of your stay in a new place. They have over 250,000 surveyors helping them produce the highest quality content for print and the web. A Zagat review is a review that you can trust. If you already have an internship, why not grab a Zagat guide for the city that you’ll be living in? If you don’t have an internship, why not consider interning with Zagat?

There is a constant struggle that almost all non-profits endure – it’s organizing people. Whether they are rounding up volunteers, reaching out to donors, hiring employees, or putting together a leadership team, non-profits rely on well managed groups of people to enact change. The most effective non-profits are the ones that navigate these challenges without a hitch. Many people complain that non-profits are disorganized and suffer from poor leadership, and that is often true; however, The Open Planning Project, a non-profit itself, is hoping to change that by offering a suite of online tools to help other organizations become better organized.

Have you ever heard of Daily Candy? The girls are probably nodding their heads yes, and the boys are probably shaking their heads no. Well, Daily Candy is a daily e-mail list “from the front lines of fashion, food, and fun.” We’ve always wanted to write about their internships, but unfortunately we’ve never seen any listed (and we’re always watching). Thrillist is the manly man’s version of Daily Candy. You’ve already learned that it’s a lot easier to have someone find cool stuff for you – whether it be internships, restaurants, or clothes – than to look for yourself. That’s why companies like Thrillist and Daily Candy are thriving.

At the time that this post is set to publish, I should be off to my first softball game of the Spring, unless we get rained out (which is unfortunately looking likely). Now, I consider my Sunday morning softball games to be an “educational experience,” but the truth of the matter is that my team consists mostly of dirty old men who are 20-40 years my senior, and all I learn from them are new ways to insult people and other forms of colorful language. Still, Sunday softball is a good way to keep me off the streets and out of trouble. Harlem RBI does the same thing for inner-city kids, while also offering educational programs. I sure hope the kids in Harlem RBI are having a more meaningful educational experiences associated with their baseball and softball than I am.

How often do you take advantage of the cultural resources that your college or university offers? Do you visit the art museum? Watch your friends in their theater productions? Go to concerts? Explore the library and look at the rare book collections? Most students miss out on a ton of great cultural opportunities, which is sad because there are so many people who would love to have access to these opportunities, but don’t. That’s where Cool Culture steps in. They make New York City’s cultural institutions more accessible to low-income families.

Whenever I fly somewhere, my first instinct is to check if jetBlue Airways is an option. Why would anyone ever pick anything else? They have friendly crew members, delicious snacks, more leg room, televisions in the back of the seats, and often cheaper fares. They even have a Customer Bill of Rights that ensures great service. Why is this relevant to internships? Because companies that put out great products or services often make the best places to work. If you’re fascinated by the airline industry, then what could be better than an internship with jetBlue?
