You have to love a company whose founder is willing to admit he was wrong. Ahmet Ertegun, the guy who started Atlantic Records, once said, “I honestly never imagined I would be able to make a living doing something that was so much fun. I am very glad I was wrong.” Things may have changed at Atlantic Records – rhythm & blues, rock and roll, and jazz have certainly given way to hip hop, punk, and pop in terms of popularity, but you still have to imagine that it’s unbelievably fun to work with the biggest names in music. I was in Quebec City last week with my family to celebrate my Dad’s 60th birthday, and after a delicious chocolate croissant my Mom, Dad, and I started walking down the tourist-filled streets. Despite what their name might make you think, Ruder Finn was not founded by someone from Finland with bad manners. They are actually a family-owned public relations firm that was founded in 1948 by David Finn and Wlliam Ruder. Ruder Finn has four specialties – Health & Wellness, Global Connectivity, Corporate & Public Trust, and Life & Style – with many areas of focus within those specialties. The firm’s first client was Perry Como, who was followed by a list of other celebrities; however, Ruder Finn represents more than just celebrities. They work with many major corporations, the United Nations, and they even represented the Bosniaks and the Croats in the Yugoslav Wars. Yes, warring nations choose Ruder Finn to manage their PR – that’s impressive, albeit a bit strange.

We just found two really great websites. The first is CollegeCandy.com, whose internships we are going to talk about today. The second is Ed 2010 which guided us to CollegeCandy’s internships. It’s “a community of young magazine editors and magazine-editor wannabes who want to learn more about the industry so we can fulfill our dreams of landing top editing and writing positions in the the magazine industry” (Ed: someone really needs to edit that description from their About page). Anyway, CollegeCandy is “a website written for college women, by college women,” which may seem like it precludes guys from interning with them, but who knows?

To be honest, I’m not a theater guy. I’ve been known to fall asleep in the middle of plays, so I’m probably not the best person to tell you all about the Manhattan Theatre Cub, but I do know that they have a great internship program. The Manhattan Theatre Club is “one of the only institutions in the U.S. solely dedicated to producing new plays and musicals.” They were founded in 1970, and now MTC, a non-profit, produces 7 plays a year for its subscriber base of 20,000 in Broadway’s recently restored Biltmore Theatre on West 47th Street and at the historic New York City Center complex on West 55th Street.

Considering that it’s July, hockey probably isn’t the first thing on your mind right now, unless, of course, you’re sweltering in a room without air conditioning dreaming of the cool air inside the rink. The offseason is a time for National Hockey League Teams to address their needs, and that isn’t only about the personnel who wear ice skates. You would think that a non-profit organization named The Tank would be some new age, trendy think tank – a 20 something’s take on a policy institute. The Tank is new and trendy, but it’s about as far away from research and advocacy as you can get. “The Tank is a space for performing and visual arts emphasizing new work by emerging performers, designers, writers, directors and producers.” The Tank is mainly centered around performing arts such as comedy, dance, film, music, multimedia, and theater. Major events that they put on include the Blip Festival and the Bent Festival, while they also put on smaller scale events every week.

If you’ve spent any time in New York City on a 100 degree day, you know it’s not a good place for your lungs. The air is thick and hard to breathe, the smell of the streets is downright disgusting, and the only respite is when you walk by the occasional open door of an establishment that has its air conditioning pumped up to the max. No outdoors loving kid would ever want to spend an entire summer there – especially if that kid has asthma or other pulmonary problems (which are much more frequent for city children). That’s why The Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations in the country to more than 1.7 million children from disadvantaged communities in New York City since 1877.

Yesterday we were doing our daily scan for Fall Internships on Twitter via Summize and came across something cool. XM Satellite Radio has a Twitter account solely for its internship program. Although they only have 7 followers at the moment, XM’s interns are doing something groundbreaking – they’re live micro-blogging their internships with corporate blessing. We are impressed! That was enough to convince us to write about XM’s internships; however, we were doubly impressed when a closer look at their internships site reavealed that XM currently has 31 Fall internships listed.

Despite the fact that L’Occitane has a tab for Men on their website, I have to admit that I’ve never used their products. When it comes to fragrance, skin care, body & hands, bath & shower, hair care, etc. I’m more interested getting the job done than enjoying the experience. I know that there are plenty of men (and even more women) who have a very different philosophy when it comes to these types of products, so I imagine that an internship with L’Occitane would be a pretty cool thing for a lot of you.

Poets & Writers is an organization for creative writers, by creative writers, and it provides a wealth of information and resources that not only help individual creative writers, but also improves the state of modern literature as a whole. We can appreciate that, since our daily posts about internships are a key part of modern American literature (yes, we’re kidding). In fact, Poets & Writers is the country’s largest non-profit organization that serves creative writers. They offer opportunities for writers to connect with each other and funding for “writers who give readings or conduct writing workshops.” Poets & Writers also acts as a resource and clearinghouse for information that creative writers will find valuable. They “compile resources with real value to writers,” while eliminating all the junk that might not seem so bad at first. Isn’t it nice to have someone digest information for you and then spit it back to you after they’ve given it a good once, twice, or three times over? Poets & Writers shares this information through their website and their magazine.

Sometimes stories are too good not to repeat. “The Birth of a Shoe Company” as told by Kenneth Cole is one of them.
Twenty years ago, I wanted to open a shoe company with limited money. From experience I knew one had to get in quickly because so often new companies run out of cash flow before they get the chance to conduct business. I also knew it was easier to get credit from factories in Europe who needed the business than from American banks that didn’t. So I lined up the factories, went to Europe, designed a collection of shoes, and returned to the states to sell them.
At the time, a shoe company had two options. You could get a room at the Hilton and become 1 of about 1100 shoe companies selling their goods. This didn’t provide the identity or image I felt necessary for a new company, and it cost a lot more money than I had to spend. The other way was to do what the big companies do and get a fancy showroom in Midtown Manhattan not far from the Hilton. More identity, much more money too.

One year, my cousin gave me a subscription to MAD Magazine for my birthday. I had never read an issue before, but I definitely recognized their icon Alfred E. Neuman. I didn’t think that I’d get that into it, but every month I’d look forward to getting the latest issue in the mail. Most of the jokes probably went over my head, because I was about 12 years old at the time, but I’d sit there and read and laugh. The only way you’re going to understand what MAD is all about is to pick up an issue, so head out to your nearest magazine rack and get one if you’d like to put your sense of humor to work this summer.

At the time that this post is set to publish, I should be off to my first softball game of the Spring, unless we get rained out (which is unfortunately looking likely). Now, I consider my Sunday morning softball games to be an “educational experience,” but the truth of the matter is that my team consists mostly of dirty old men who are 20-40 years my senior, and all I learn from them are new ways to insult people and other forms of colorful language. Still, Sunday softball is a good way to keep me off the streets and out of trouble. Harlem RBI does the same thing for inner-city kids, while also offering educational programs. I sure hope the kids in Harlem RBI are having a more meaningful educational experiences associated with their baseball and softball than I am.
