I’m fascinated by Japan. I’ve never been there, but my wife and I are planning a trip there for our honeymoon. There’s an intensity to the culture that I absolutely love, but there are also some things I just don’t get. Pepsi flavored Cheetos is one, and anime is another. In case you didn’t know, anime is the Japanese word for animation. But here in the U.S. it’s typically used to describe “a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastic themes” (at least that’s what Wikipedia says). While anime isn’t for me, A LOT of people love it–and most of them are adults. Crunchyroll is a San Francisco, CA and Tokyo, Japan based company that caters to this audience by offering “the leading global video service for Japanese Anime and Asian media.”

Today my wife and I got our puppy from the breeder. He is a Braque Francais. Here’s a picture. He doesn’t have a name yet, so we’re taking suggestions (just hit reply–and bonus points if it’s French). I’m already completely in love with him, and that means that I’m headed down the path of buying ridiculous merchandise for my dog. Amy and I already made one trip to the pet store, and that resulted in extensive use of my veto power. One way I might be able to limit the damage is by subscribing to something like BarkBox. It’s a monthly subscription that gives you “a combination of 4-6 treats, toys, and hygiene products that have been hand selected” for your dog. While BarkBox is the product (and it came first), the company is Bark & Co. They are based in New York, NY, and they are “dedicated to building products that foster the health and happiness of dogs everywhere.”

I moved last week, and that means I’ve been operating on other people’s schedules. Last week it was the movers, yesterday was the cleaning lady, today it was the cable guy, tomorrow it’s the box guy, and next week it’s the Salvation Army picking up all the stuff that we’re donating. While we “picked” all of the times for those appointments, we didn’t really have much of a choice. Yesterday we looked at Institute for Educational Leadership, one of a seemingly endless number of non-profits devoted to improving educational outcomes. Education seems to be one of the most worthy and, as a result, pursued causes, but I think poverty reduction has to come in number one. When I played baseball in high school, my teammates and I all hated having to “keep the book.” Not only did it mean that you probably weren’t playing, but it also meant that you had to pay 100% attention while you were sitting on the bench. I have to think that keeping the book it a little more fun now that it’s done on tablets and smartphones. GameChanger Media is a New York, NY based company that is bringing high end scorekeeping and stat keeping technology to amateur sports. Not only do they make it ridiculously easy to record everything that happens in a game, but they also allow you to livestream those stats to any fan with an Internet connection (parents must love this!). When the action is over, GameChanger automatically tabulate and displays all kinds of important stats.

Personal finance and the job search go hand in hand. There’s plenty that you can do to get your financial life in order before you start working, but you can’t really start taking control until the paychecks start hitting your bank account (even though that’s probably the most tempting time to lose control). As I’ve learned from Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You To Be Rich, personal financial success is about behavioral change, and changing your behavior is hard. That’s why I was intrigued to learn about a “financial wellness” tool that was designed with the help of behavioral economists. The company behind it is called HelloWallet, and they’re based in Washington, DC. Their goal is to “boost the wealth of workers by democratizing access to honest financial guidance – something only 20 percent of Americans have access to today.”

I was way ahead on the flash sales and members only shopping thing. I did a writeup on Gilt Groupe almost five years ago just as the business model was catching on. While there isn’t nearly as much excitement about the space as there used to be, it’s still a great way to sell stuff (time constraints and sales both have amazing psychological effects on people). And that’s why I think it’s worth taking a look at Rue La La. They’re a Boston, MA and New York, NY based company that curates “Boutiques filled with the best of the best in women’s and men’s fashion, home, travel, kids, and more.” Each sale lasts 48 hours and is limited to members only (though becoming a member is about as easy as signing up).

I have a favorite Yankees blog, and I occasionally participate in a Cornell Hockey forum. I follow a few athletes on Twitter, and sometimes get into sports debates on Facebook. I’d imagine that I’m a pretty typical sports fan in terms of my social media and web use–my attention is fragmented across a lot of different sites. LockerDome is a St. Louis, MO based startup that offers a social media platform to help “professional athletes, brands, media personalities, and other sports properties” reach their fans wherever they’re consuming content online. The idea is that LockerDome acts “as a social hub [for athletes and brands] to amplify their overall social media strategy.”

Job searching and looking for love can be similarly painful. There’s the fear of rejection, the lack of useful feedback, and the constant pressure to make something happen from family and friends. While there’s no holiday that makes being unemployed feel like being alone on Valentine’s Day, there are plenty of day to day reminders that you need to get a job (hopefully these e-mails are a positive reminder). I think that one of the reasons that people struggle to find both love and jobs is that they try to do it alone. What if you had a few friends to help you along the way? That’s what Grouper is proposing. They’re a New York, NY based dating startup/social club “that sets up drinks between 2 groups of friends.” They don’t even use the word “dating” on their homepage, and I think that’s a brilliant branding decision–it’s all about meeting new people. I’m especially fond of Grouper because they’re running with the fish theme.

I’m on vacation in Aruba, so I’ve been going out to dinner every night. One thing that I’ve noticed at nearly ever restaurant is kids playing games on iPhones or even iPads while their parents essentially ignore them. iDevices are great educational tools, but so is a family dinner. I’m sure there are some reasons for exception, but I think most parents should probably have some sort of “no playing games at the dinner table” rule. Save the game playing for another time… like at school. That’s what eSpark is aiming for. A few weeks ago I was reminded of how annoying car ownership can be. I got a flat. Luckily I was parked on my street and they weren’t doing street cleaning that day. I called AAA to have them help put on my spare, but it ended up that the spare was rusted in place on the bottom of the car. Then I had to call a tow truck to take the car to a tire shop where I spent $500 on new tires. Overall it wasn’t too bad (I wasn’t stuck on the side of the road in a bad neighborhood or anything), but the experience reminded me that there’s a price for all of those times that having a car is super convenient. Getaround is a San Francisco, CA based company that changes the car ownership equation. They offer a platform for peer-to-peer car sharing that allows car owners to earn money by renting out their cars and the carless to enjoy the convenience of owning a car when they need it.

I didn’t make any progress on gift buying yesterday, which means that my online shopping options are getting pretty slim. I’m either going to have to pay for expedited shipping or step foot in a retail store. If I lived in San Francisco, CA, I’d have a hybrid option. Postmates is a company that offers “a revolutionary same day urban logistics & delivery platform.” Yesterday we talked about how Quiet Logistics has enabled e-commerce upstarts to compete with Amazon in terms of fulfillment. Postmates is doing that for local retailers. If it can be purchased in your city (legally of course), you can probably have Postmates deliver it to your door for a price starting at $6.99.

Bonobos is one of my favorite companies that I’ve written up. Right now they’re offering a free $50 gift card to new customers. Their awesome men’s clothing makes a great holiday gift, and it’s the kind of stuff that guys can wear to a new job.

This morning I learned that Audiogalaxy is being acquired by Dropbox. Audiogalaxy was the ultimate way to find and download awesome music back in the day. The experience that it offered back in the early 2000s was pretty remarkable, but they operated in a legal gray area and eventually had to drastically change their service. Today downloading is out and streaming is in. And if you’re streaming music, chances are that you’re using Spotify. The Swedish company launched its product in the US (their US headquarters is in New York, NY) about a year and a half ago and pretty much blew away the competition. While most streaming services offer a “radio” type experience, Spotify allows you to listen to any of their 20 million licensed songs whenever you want.

I’ve taken my fair share of web based courses–all with the intent of gaining skills to improve my business. I’ve learned to code, write copy, do SEO, and a lot more online. I even developed my own course on how to land a job. There are a multitude of companies in the online education space, and most are focusing on these kinds of topics. Sympoz is a Denver, CO based company that is taking a different approach. Yes, they have a few courses on entrepreneurship, but their bread and butter is the craft market. They have a section of their site devoted to woodworking and an entire brand called Craftsy that has the tagline “Learn it. Make it.” Sympoz’s goal is to create “an environment where you can watch, interact, and learn from renowned experts on your own schedule,” and so far it seems like they’re doing a pretty awesome job.

Amy, my fiancée, and I communicate a lot over the course of the day. Beyond talking in person, we typically talk on the phone, we e-mail, we Gchat, and we iMessage. It works for us, but I could see how someone might want all of those communications in one place. Others might want to participate in some online PDA without the P. Either way, Pair is a solution. It’s an app created by a company called TenthBit in San Francisco, CA that is “for just the two of you.” Its features include “texting, sharing, videos, photos, sketching together, thumbkiss and more.” It’s a little overkill for me, but I can see why some couples love it.

This Gangnam Style craze is kind of ridiculous, right? I originally saw the video in July and found it pretty amusing, but didn’t think much more of it. A couple months later it has over a quarter billion views on YouTube. I’m not sure if the interest will carry over into other Korean entertainment acts, but if it does, DramaFever is extremely well positioned. They are a New York, NY based company that gives “you a better way to find and watch the best TV and movies from around the world.” Their original focus was on Korean dramas, but they are rapidly expanding their offerings of tv shows and movies from Taiwan, China, Singapore and the Philippines. Bollywood films and latin telenovelas will come next. What’s interesting about DramaFever is that they target their content toward English speaking audiences, so it’s not just about giving expats the content that they miss from home.

I don’t know if being a nerd has ever been cooler than it is now. As technology becomes more approachable, so do the people who make it. It’s even come to the point where kids who are anything but nerds are self-identifying as nerds by posting pictures of themselves wearing glasses on Instagram. They can call themselves whatever they want, but real nerds make stuff. That’s exactly what the nerds at The Nerdery do. The Nerdery is a Bloomington, MN based company (they also have an office in Chicago, IL) that partners “with creative minds and big thinkers to engineer and build award-winning interactive projects.” They’ve also managed to win a few awards for themselves including being named to the Inc. 5000 for five years in a row. This year they only came in at #1,041 with 305% three-year growth to $26.2 million in revenue. That’s ridiculously impressive.

Occasionally I come across a company that I’m shocked that I’ve never heard of before. You’d think that after writing about more than 1,700 companies, there wouldn’t be many surprises left. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Just look at Silver Chalice. It’s a Chicago, IL based company that “builds and operates a fast-growing portfolio of high-value digital media businesses in the fields of sports and entertainment.” The company’s Chairman happens to be Jerry Reinsdorf–yes, the same Jerry Reinsdorf who owns the Bulls and White Sox. I love sports. I love tech. I live in Chicago. I should have heard about them at some point, but it seems that Silver Chalice likes to keep a low profile. I can’t really figure out why they’d want to do that, but the last major press coverage that they got was in 2009 right before they publicly launched. Back then the company was described as “an outside company to supplement the team’s core operations” (in reference to the White Sox).

The Air & Water Show is happening here in Chicago this weekend. With the Blue Angels buzzing the city and parachuters dropping down in preparation for the real show tomorrow, I’m reminded that a part of me always wanted to be a fighter jet pilot. Unfortunately, I’m 6’3 and near-sighted, so that was never going to happen. The closest that I’m ever going to get is playing MetalStorm: Wingman on my iPad. In case you’ve never played, it’s an awesome fighter jet simulator game. There’s a single player mode that’s pretty fun, and you can also go one-on-one online if you want to get smoked by random middle schoolers (it’s a good ego check). MetalStorm: Wingman, along with Battle Nations and Trade Nations, is produced by Z2Live, which is a Seattle, WA based company that “creates original next-generation, free-to-play, social and multiplayer games for mobile devices.”

Remember when you had to worry about whether a file or program was compatible with your computer’s operating system? These days most people do everything in the web browser, and that means that they can access the same functionality across a multitude of devices. The problem is that building a website for a 30 inch screen is very different from building for a 15 inch screen, and an 11 inch screen, and a 4 inch screen, and so on. Creating excellent user experiences for different platforms is really hard (ODOJ has a responsive design that should look great on any device, but it took a lot of work). Usablenet is a company that makes the process a lot easier. When people unsubscribe from these e-mails, the biggest complaint that I hear is that the jobs aren’t relevant (have you tried our search engine?). I understand that a single company every day isn’t enough for some people, but if you think our posts are just about the company that we’re covering that day, you’re missing a big part of ODOI’s value. Each day’s profile should be a jumping off point for your job search. So let’s say you really liked Totsy, but you want to be on the West Coast. Did you immediately start looking for competitors closer to where you want to be? If you had, you would have found Zulily, a Seattle, WA based company that offers “daily deals for moms, babies and kids.” It’s a pretty similar business, but it’s a completely different company. Even if you have no interest in either of these companies, you can use them as inspiration to find other interesting companies. For instance you could look up their investors, and see which other companies they’re investing in, or you could look at the products each site sells and research the companies that make them.

I love having a car. I’m actually surprised at how easy it is to live in a city the size of Chicago with one, but it does come with headaches. Parking has been a nightmare lately because of street work, and there was the time someone pooped in our car’s door handle (I wish I was making this up). While you could use Zipcar or even Uber to get around, the best situation is to have a friend who will let you borrow his or her car whenever you want. But what if your friends are carless or, even worse, you have no friends? That’s where Wheelz comes in. The San Francisco, CA based company (sorry, I know that’s 3 this week) is the AirBnB for cars. Basically it’s peer-to-peer car sharing/renting.

How many times have you received a punch card from a business to work your way towards some sort of free merchandise? How often have you actually held on to the card long enough to redeem it? The only time a punch card worked for me was when I was buying for a group and maxed out the whole thing at once. The obvious replacement for punchcards is a smartphone app, and Belly is a Chicago, IL based company that is making it easy for merchants to offer loyalty programs. The nice thing is that you only need one card/app for every merchant (as long as they use Belly). All you have to do is flash your card or a barcode from the app in front of the merchant’s Belly iPad and you’ll get credit for your visit.
