NHL Teams

Considering that it’s July, hockey probably isn’t the first thing on your mind right now, unless, of course, you’re sweltering in a room without air conditioning dreaming of the cool air inside the rink. The offseason is a time for National Hockey League Teams to address their needs, and that isn’t only about the personnel who wear ice skates. Although many of the NHL Teams have major Summer internship programs, they also need interns during the hockey season. While you may be focused on baseball or the Olympics right now, you should get your mind back to hockey for a bit and try to find an internship with an NHL Team for this coming fall or spring.

We were once again scanning Twitter for companies that are looking for Fall interns, and we came across a number of tweets regarding SHIFT Communications. That convinced us to take a look, and we’re pretty happy with what we found (although not happy that barely any companies are tweeting about Fall internships yet). SHIFT Communications is a tech PR firm located in Boston, MA and San Francisco, CA. Judging from their Twitter presence and the fact that they link to 3 of their blogs on their home page, they’re really up on this social media thing. As they should be, tech PR is all about being online.

Captivate Network

Elevators are by definition awkward. We’re not talking about the design, which is actually one of the more elegant inventions in human history, but about the social aspects of being in an elevator. When you step in, you are forced to invade other people’s personal space. You don’t know whether to make small talk or to look forward and do nothing. If you’re in the back and need to get out, but there are people in front of you, it can be a struggle to not miss your floor. It’s generally an uncomfortable experience to step into an elevator (what if it fell? ahhhh), but millions of people have to do it every day to get where they live or work. Captivate Network hasn’t completely eliminated the awkwardness of elevator travel, but they have a product that makes the experience less awkward and delivers marketing messages to millions of people every day.

We continue to be impressed with Twitter. We were scanning for internships when we came across Rebecca Corliss’ tweet about last-minute PR internships. She’s a soon to be/recent graduate from Boston University who interned with the Ictus Initiative and loved the experience so much that she went to work with them part-time as a publicist. Her rave reviews convinced us to share these internships, which are located in Boston, MA, with you as quickly as we possibly could.

Happy Mother’s Day! We’re not sure how many moms we have reading, but we know of at least a few. If you haven’t told your mom about us, why don’t you? She’d probably be thrilled to help you with your internship search. We’re not sure if you’ve noticed, but we only write about non-profit internships on the weekends, and we like to run with holiday themes. This combination provided especially troubling today, for there aren’t nearly as many Mom-related non-profits out there as you would think there are. From the ones that we could find, very few had any sort of internship opportunities. We persisted in our search and found the Crittenton Women’s Union, a non-profit organization in the Boston area, that “transforms the course of low-income women’s lives so that they can attain economic independence and create better futures for themselves and their families.” They turned up on an Idealist search for the word “mother,” so we’re going with it.

Live, Work, Thrive

The Crittenton Women’s Union’s domain name is LiveWorkThrive.org, which is quite fitting for an organization that supports low-income women through advocacy, education, family support services, housing, research, and workforce development. Here’s more on what the Crittenton Women’s Union does. You should also take a look at the Voice Project Blog for deeper insights about how the Crittenton Women’s Union is empowering women to create social change. In fact, the organization’s entire website is fantastic and should be able to answer any questions that you might have before you consider interning with them.

Celebrate Mother’s Day Every Day This Summer

Crittenton Women’s Union is currently offering 7 different Summer internships including the following opportunities: Healthy Families Intern, FLASH Intern, Assessment Center Case Management Intern, Horizons Housing Program Intern, Hastings House Administrative Intern, Marketing / Communications Intern, Research Assistant Intern. There is also one Fall internship offering in Institutional Advancement. More information about each internship can be found on the Crittenton Women’s Union Internships page. All opportunities are unpaid, located in Brighton, MA or in the greater Boston area, and have an application deadline of June 2nd. You can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to Jeff Swallom at jswallom@liveworkthrive.org

Sun Microsystems

I’ll admit it; I’ve become a mild Twitter addict. I just keep finding internships to write about by scanning tweets and following the links that they contain. It’s getting late in the game, and harder and harder to find companies that are still looking for Summer interns, but using unorthodox methods can turn up some great results. Most recently, I found a link to a post by a Sun Microsystems employee who is looking for two interns. Her post led us to Sun’s main Careers site, which truly impressed us.
