Back before cell phones got all fancy and digital service just meant that you were able to send and receive text messages, I thought that it was important to have a dual band phone – analog and digital. I was often off fishing in rural areas where digital cell service was nonexistent, so I figured that it was better to have crappy service than no service. Although we’ve mostly moved into the digital age of cell phones, there are still all types of different cellular networks that require different frequencies and hardware to operate on. Vanu is a Cambridge, MA based company that is building a software based radio access network. What does that mean? Instead of requiring cellular providers to invest in new hardware for every network that they operate on, they can use one piece of a single reusable hardware platform to operate on multiple networks. Although the science behind this is way over our heads, we think that it sounds pretty slick.

The company that we’ve been watching makes an iPhone application that tells you the artist and title of almost any song that you play into the speaker. Unfortunately, they are UK based and don’t have any job or internship opportunities, so we won’t be featuring them any time soon. In a completely unrelated search for Fall internships, we came across Shazam, a company that specializes in electronic fund transfers, electronic payments, and debit products. Their product may not be nearly as fun (well, money is fun), but they appear to have some really cool internship opportunities.

We Americans seem to love picking up on Japanese culture and making it part of our own popular culture. Karate, sushi, and video games are excellent examples of things that we’ve adapted in our own way into our everyday lives. Manga and anime haven’t quite had such wide adoption (except for Pokemon), but there seems to be a large group of fanatics who are absolutely obsessed with Japanese animation and graphic novels. Today’s internships are for those people. VIZ Media, owned by three of Japan’s largest creators and licensors of manga and animation, is “a leader in the publishing and distribution of Japanese manga for English speaking audiences.” When it comes to publishing, animation, and entertainment licensing of Japanese content, VIZ Media is the company. They publish magazines and graphic novels, produce DVDs, and develop, market, license, and distribute animated entertainment for those of us who consider Japanese a foreign language.

You have to love a company whose founder is willing to admit he was wrong. Ahmet Ertegun, the guy who started Atlantic Records, once said, “I honestly never imagined I would be able to make a living doing something that was so much fun. I am very glad I was wrong.” Things may have changed at Atlantic Records – rhythm & blues, rock and roll, and jazz have certainly given way to hip hop, punk, and pop in terms of popularity, but you still have to imagine that it’s unbelievably fun to work with the biggest names in music. Atlantic’s artist list is ridiculously impressive with something for nearly everyone.

Do you have an iPhone yet? Maybe that’s an obnoxious question, but it’s getting less and less obnoxious as software developers continue to push out amazing applications. The iPhone is adding serious productivity tools in addition to the obvious entertainment capabilities in “the best iPod that Apple has ever made.” We may even be reaching the point where you can call an iPhone purchase a capital investment without cracking a smile. Apple is largely responsible for the iPhone’s success to this point, but it’s the 3rd party software developers who are taking the iPhone’s popularity to the next level. Pinch Media is a company that helps these iPhone developers grow their businesses. They’re doing so through analytics and advertising software that they’ve created for iPhone developers, but Pinch Media is also sitting down with developers and helping them determine when advertising makes sense, and when it doesn’t. Pinch Media’s business is all about helping other people make the most out of what they do best – the development of great iPhone applications.

There’s a reason that the vast majority of YouTube videos don’t look nearly as good as even the simplest local news broadcast – they lack production. They’re still amusing, but YouTube content isn’t typically something that you want to sit down and watch for a couple hours on you HDTV. Now, if you’re the type of student who would make a good intern at Everest Production, you probably already know this – and you’re probably one of the few people who is putting high quality content out on YouTube. For those who don’t know what a company like Evererest Production does, they provide services such as Video Editing, Dubbing, Motion Graphics, Music, and a lot more. Oh yeah, and they’ll create the movie and shoot it too. Ok, so we don’t know much about production either, but we do know that Everest Production’s projects look pretty darn good. How do you make any sport better? Put the word “arena” in front of it! Arena Soccer, arena badminton, arena fishing, arena skydiving… you get the idea. Putting “arena” in front of a sport’s name is only second to putting “extreme” in front of it. Well one of the sports that actually works (not necessarily better) in an arena is football. The Arena Football League is exciting to watch and offers an option for the football junkies who are bored to tears in the offseason. Getting an internship in sports can be tough, and getting an internship with a team in a major sports league can be near impossible. Sometimes looking to the secondary leagues (sorry AFL) can offer great alternatives.

My first day of orientation at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations included a great story from David Price, one of CBS’s Early Show hosts and formerly the Fox 5 Weather Guy. He told us about how he spent 4 years living with an animal. The animal was his Freshman year roommate (whom he decided to continue living with for the next 3 years for some crazy reason). The best story about David Price’s roommate was when he ordered a sheet (sicilian) pizza after a long night of drinking. He ate about half of the pizza, but then realized that he was becoming very tired. Before he passed out, he decided to staple the remaining pieces of the pizza to the wall next to his bed. That way as he drifted in and out of sleep, he could enjoy his pizza by only slightly moving his neck to reach the pizza that was stapled to the wall. David Price is second only to Jane Goodall when it comes to living amongst animals. In case you aren’t familiar with Dr. Dame Jane Goodall, you should know that she spent a good part of her life living among chimpanzees to study their social and family interactions. She also founded the The Jane Goodall Institute, which offers some interesting internship opportunities.

We just found two really great websites. The first is CollegeCandy.com, whose internships we are going to talk about today. The second is Ed 2010 which guided us to CollegeCandy’s internships. It’s “a community of young magazine editors and magazine-editor wannabes who want to learn more about the industry so we can fulfill our dreams of landing top editing and writing positions in the the magazine industry” (Ed: someone really needs to edit that description from their About page). Anyway, CollegeCandy is “a website written for college women, by college women,” which may seem like it precludes guys from interning with them, but who knows?

What perfect timing! I happen to be in Montreal during the Rogers Cup, and I’m writing about the ATP and WTA Tennis Tours. Ok, so I’m not actually going to see any tennis matches, but the highlights have been all over the tv news here. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of tennis, but I still think it would be pretty cool to intern for the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) or WTA (Women’s Tennis Association). They’re both looking for Fall interns, and they won’t make you do the tennis version of getting the coffee – be a ball boy or girl.

I have to admit that I’m starting to feel like I’m getting old (at 23). When I heard about internship opportunities at Fearless Records, I got excited, but then realized that I had only heard of one band (formerly) on their roster – Plain White T’s – and I don’t even know why I’ve heard of them. Anyway, it’s not that Fearless Records isn’t a great record label, it’s that I can’t keep up with new music any more. My first website was music related, but now I’m lucky if I know who half the artists on the Top 20 are. I do know that Fearless Records isn’t Top 20 type music, but I’m going to refrain from trying to talk too much about something that is out of my depth

If you’ve been reading for more than about a week, you’ve probably noticed that we spend a lot of time using social media to find exciting internships for you. It’s still not the best way to find employment opportunities, but it’s certainly the most interesting and the most engaging. Just look at Revision3, the Internet TV station. They’re blogging (and their Interns are blogging, and their interns have their own blogs too), Twittering, YouTubing, Digging, Flickring (Interns on Flickr too), and Facebooking, of course. They’re probably doing a lot more too. Revision3 is an Internet startup, so they kind of have to embrace social media, but the vast amount of information that they provide about themselves is an amazing recruiting tool. If you have any interest in working at Revision3, you’ll find everything that you need to get you even more excited about sending them an internship application. The idea for today’s post came straight from a One Day, One Job reader. She graduated a few months ago and has been looking for entry-level jobs in event planning since. She told us about one company that she was really excited about, but asked us not to post about it until she was either working for them or had landed another job. Even though we’re talking about internships here, we wanted to hold off on posting. Now that she recently landed a job doing exactly what she wants to do (big congratulations to her), we’re free to tell you about hip consulting group, a boutique event management firm. Considering that it’s July, hockey probably isn’t the first thing on your mind right now, unless, of course, you’re sweltering in a room without air conditioning dreaming of the cool air inside the rink. The offseason is a time for National Hockey League Teams to address their needs, and that isn’t only about the personnel who wear ice skates. Although many of the NHL Teams have major Summer internship programs, they also need interns during the hockey season. While you may be focused on baseball or the Olympics right now, you should get your mind back to hockey for a bit and try to find an internship with an NHL Team for this coming fall or spring.

Say that you need to ship something – a mini donkey for instance (this is a real example). UPS, the USPS, DHL, and Fedex don’t ship donkeys. With uShip all you need to do is list that you need to ship a mini donkey, receive bids, select a winning bid, and ship that donkey where it needs to go. You don’t need to worry about your prized donkey, because you can check the shipper’s feedback and see that he has shipped all kind of livestock to all kinds of places, and every time his customers have been happy. It’s pretty simple, huh? A lot easier than bringing the donkey into your local post office only to find out that even mini donkeys are too big to ship. uShip calls themselves “the online shipping marketplace” and they back it up with their raving fans.

My experience with Philadelphia goes about as far as I95, the Philadelphia airport, and what I saw on Boy Meets World. Ok, I also have fond memories of watching the 1993 World Series at a friend’s house because my parents had decided to go without tv for a few years. Back in January, we featured Rapleaf’s entry-level jobs on One Day, One Job. We were pretty impressed by them, and now we’re happy to see that they’re looking for Fall interns. We used this example to illustrate what Rapleaf is all about.
Let’s say instead of giving away a Wii to a One Day, One Job reader over the holiday season (which we actually did), we chose to scalp it on Craigslist. Three interested parties e-mail us with offers to meet up for the exchange. We don’t want to get scammed, and we also want to avoid wasting our time going to meet someone who doesn’t show. How would we find out if the people who e-mailed us are trustworthy? We could try Googling their e-mail address and see what comes up, or we could use RapLeaf to check their reputations.
Since then, I’ve played around with Rapleaf some more. It’s a really cool idea, but wider adoption would make it a much more useful service. If you decide to give Rapleaf a try, be sure to give me a rating based on how much you trust me to bring you great info about internships. Here’s my Rapleaf score.

Yesterday we were doing our daily scan for Fall Internships on Twitter via Summize and came across something cool. XM Satellite Radio has a Twitter account solely for its internship program. Although they only have 7 followers at the moment, XM’s interns are doing something groundbreaking – they’re live micro-blogging their internships with corporate blessing. We are impressed! That was enough to convince us to write about XM’s internships; however, we were doubly impressed when a closer look at their internships site reavealed that XM currently has 31 Fall internships listed.

Rue 21 is all about fashionable clothing at a reasonable price. They sell both men’s and women’s wares in their stores, which stretch across 41 states. As of now they’re strictly a brick and mortar operation, although it looks like they might be moving towards an online store at some point. I’ve been known to give people a hard time for buying Fiji Water, but then to drink it myself. I drink a lot of water, and Fiji Water is some of the best, but it seems crazy to have water shipped half way around the world when we have some of the world’s best drinking water sitting in our toilets (and coming out of our faucets too). Still, there’s something to be said for enjoying the luxury of sipping water that comes from an artesian well at the edge of a primitive rain forest. If you’re going to drink bottled water, it might as well come from Fiji. It might be as close as you’ll ever get to the place.

Despite the fact that L’Occitane has a tab for Men on their website, I have to admit that I’ve never used their products. When it comes to fragrance, skin care, body & hands, bath & shower, hair care, etc. I’m more interested getting the job done than enjoying the experience. I know that there are plenty of men (and even more women) who have a very different philosophy when it comes to these types of products, so I imagine that an internship with L’Occitane would be a pretty cool thing for a lot of you.

Ok, we realize that today’s internships are going to sound a lot like yesterdays. While the Heritage Foundation identifies itself as a conservative thinktank, The Cato Institute considers itself more of a non-profit libertarian public policy research foundation. We usually wouldn’t repeat, but we were running down the list of Greg Mankiw approved internships, and Cato’s internship website blew us away. It’s fantastic. Their deadline for Fall internships is July 1, so we couldn’t even save them for next weekend if we wanted to.

I’m kind of a nerd – I really like reading Economics blogs. So I was delighted to come a cross a a post about internships on Greg Mankiw’s Blog. He’s certainly one of my favorite Econ bloggers (and he’s a Harvard professor), so I value his internship recommendations quite highly. Unfortunately I came across his post when the deadlines had passed for Summer internships at many of the organizations he named. I made note of this, and now that we’re looking at Fall internships, I’ve decided to return to some of the ideas Dr. Mankiw shared. Today we’re going to look at The Heritage Foundation,
a research and educational institute – a think tank – whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.

Great timing for this one. The Houston Astros are 37-42 and just released a player for choking their General Manager. Still, they are a Major League Baseball team, and they have a ton of Fall internships available. Despite the rough times that the team is going through, we doubt that they’ll have any effect on the quality of the internships experience. There are few internships more desirable than those with professional sports teams.
