I’m an iPhone guy, so I tend to feel sorry for people who are constantly thumbing away on their BlackBerries. That’s just my being a smug Apple user though. I realize that a lot of people love their BlackBerries and for good reason. They’re pretty remarkable devices, and they’re perfectly tailored for business use. (Although not as perfectly tailored as my iPhone! Ok, I’m done.) That’s why Research In Motion, the company that makes BlackBerries, has a 16.6% share of the smartphone market. They seem to have hit a bit of a rough spot lately (at least their stock price makes it look like they have), but their market position is still very strong. That’s why it’s no surprise that they appear to have a huge internship program; however, the real reason that I wanted to feature Research In Motion here is that they chose an unfortunate, yet inappropriately hilarious domain name for their Jobs site (it redirects now, but I think that you can figure it out).

Since I moved to Chicago, I’ve been trying to get myself involved with the Chicago startup/tech community. This may not be Silicon Valley, but there are some pretty cool things going on here. One of them I found about today from Twitter, and it’s called Branserv. Yes, I know that it sounds like a breakfast cereal that helps you with “regularity,” but there’s nothing “regular” about them. Branserv is a startup whose goal is to “make software companies rich,” and they plan on doing that by creating “hardware appliances for micro ISVs, software startups and open source software projects that increase revenues and brand recognition while decreasing technical support demands. All at no risk.” Ok, that sounds a little complicated – let’s try that again. What Branserv does is work with software companies to develop hardware (aka appliances) that runs with the software (see: Google Search Appliance). Ok, I’m still a little confused, but that’s ok.

When I’m working during the day (or night), I like to have the tv on. I’m not usually actively watching – I just like having some background noise. With that said, I still prefer to have something decently entertaining on (otherwise I’ll start yelling at the tv about how bad the show is). Lately the Travel Channel has been putting out a strong effort. Shows like No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain and Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern are perfect for what I’m looking for in a tv show. There are also some cool new shows like Dhani Tackles the Globe and Man v. Food that look like something I might even want to watch when I’m not working. I never used to think much of the Travel Channel, so it’s cool to see that they’re really committing to improving their programming.

I remember the days of browser wars. It was Netscape vs. Internet Explorer, and it was ugly – the Internet that is. Back then it was all about whether or not your browser displayed pages properly, and people were passionately in favor of one browser or the other (or maybe some weird 3rd option). Now it’s all a lot simpler (unless you’re still using Internet Explorer) – your browser probably displays most sites just fine, and you’re more worried about speed and bells and whistles. That’s where Mozilla shines with their Firefox browser. They’re absolutely dominant with web savvy users (except with me – I still use Safari), and they are constantly making their products better. The Mozilla Corporation is a Mountain View, CA based wholly-owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit, while the Corporation calls itself a “public benefit organization.” That means that they are “dedicated not to making money but to improving the way people everywhere experience the Internet” – even if by definition they’re still a for profit.

I like adventures. I enjoy heading into the woods and going fishing or, perhaps, going skiing for a weekend when I’ve never skied before (please don’t let me hurt myself); however, I’m not sure that going into space is for me. Yes, it would be really cool, but I have to admit that it would make me a little nervous. I also can’t afford a trip to space. Maybe in the future traveling to space will be as normal as flying in airplanes and it’ll cost just about as much too, but until then you’ll have to rely on companies like Space Adventures to get you to space. They are a Vienna, VA based company that claims to be the “only company currently providing opportunities for actual private spaceflight and space tourism today.” I’m sure it’s not cheap, but if you have the cash, they can put you in space.

If you’ve been reading for a while, you’ve probably heard me talk about old media and new media. Old media is dying and new media is thriving. And if there’s any proof to back that up, it’s that The New York Times – probably the world’s strongest old media brand – is facing severe financial struggles. But they’re still The New York Times. They’re trying to grab hold of new media, and they’re doing a lot of things right, but they’re just too big. New media is all about being small and agile, and large corporations still have a lot of adjusting to do. With that said, it’s evident from The New York Times’ internship postings that they’re moving in the right direction.

When NBC Universal and News Corp. announced a new online video venture, I rolled my eyes along with nearly everyone else who had an interest in online video. Large corporations had consistently proven that they just didn’t get it. They were too busy removing videos from YouTube and suing college kids for file sharing. That’s why I was really surprised when I started using – and loving – Hulu. The fact that I can watch new episodes of Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, reruns of Doogie Howser, M.D., and Speed 2: Cruise Control (ok, their movie selection is still a little week) all for free with limited commercial interruption is pretty awesome; in fact, I now watch Hulu more than I watch tv. It’s no wonder that Hulu, which is based out of Los Angeles, CA, is winning all kinds of awards now.

At least 3 days a week I walk out of my apartment building and I smell chocolate. That may sound strange, but I live less than a mile from a chocolate factory. On days when the wind is blowing right from the West and they’re churning out chocolate, I don’t need to eat dessert – the delicious smell is enough. It’s especially enjoyable when it’s snowing out, and I’m sure that it won’t be nearly as nice on a 90 degree Summer day. It’s a pretty cool perk that I didn’t know that I was getting when I moved into this building. I’m hoping that you can get the same perk when you take an internship with The Hershey Company. I don’t know if their corporate offices are near their factories, but even if they aren’t, you’ll still be surrounded by chocolate if you work for them. Hershey’s obviously doesn’t need an introduction, but you may not know that some of their other big brands are Reese’s, KitKat, Kisses, Jolly Rancher, and Ice Breakers. Oh, and in case you didn’t know, they’re located in… Hershey, PA.

Beyond writing about a new company and its internships every day, there’s a lot of behind the scenes work that I have to do to continue growing my busines. A huge portion of that work falls under the categories of internet marketing and search engine optimization. Maybe I’m biased because I’m doing the stuff every day, but I think that being able to understand and implement online marketing concepts will be essential in many of the career paths that today’s new college grads take. If you want to set yourself up with the internet marketing skills that aren’t being taught in most undergraduate curriculums, you should consider an internship at a place like HubSpot, a Cambridge, MA based internet marketing startup.

I think that I’ve mentioned before that it’s difficult for me to write about Marketing firms, because their stories don’t tend to be very unique. Yes, they all have different strengths and areas of expertise, but I still can’t put my finger on what separates the wheat from the chaff. With that said, I’m impressed with Minneapolis, MN based Colle+McVoy. Their tagline is “Ideas That Activate Brands,” and they claim to be “a 73 year-old agency with the soul of a start-up.” Both of those sound good to me, and I have to say that I’m wowed by their website. It’s gorgeous, and it delivers their message flawlessly. I don’t say it often about corporate websites, but they nailed it. Maybe that’s how I should start judging PR firms.

Sometimes you can just tell that a company is cool by looking at their website. It’s something about the way that they carry themselves online. New York City based thehappycorp definitely sends out that vibe, although they’re almost too cool. To be honest, I don’t fully “get” them. Their home page has a lot going on, and there isn’t much more information about what they do beyond the note that they work to improve “gross national happiness through the invention, management, and maintenance of progressive brands and ideas.” Their LinkedIn gives a little more info on what they’re all about; it says that they’re an “interdisciplinary creative company, that excels at delivering design solutions that are digitally competent” while offering a “wide range of services that include innovation, web development, experiential, and influencer marketing.” Now it’s all a little more clear…

Sometimes I can be a dunderhead. When I am behind the wheel of a car, I can get irrationally angry at having to share the road with pedestrians and bikers. And when I’m walking or riding a bike, I can get irrationally angry at having to share the road with cars. I can’t be right on both accounts, so the problem is obviously with me (or maybe with the government for not setting up a better transportation system). When it comes down to it, though, it’s pretty obvious that bikers and pedestrians are second-class citizens to drivers. Cars dominate the roads, and the burden of responsibility falls on those who are biking or walking to stay alert and avoid getting hit by a couple thousand bounds of fast-moving metal. The Thunderhead Alliance for Biking and Walking is a Washington, DC based non-profit advocacy organization that stands up for the rights of bikers and walkers by “strengthening and supporting bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations” across the country. They’re a meta-non-profit. organization – an organization for organizations.

Although looking for internships can be frustrating, and buying a Wii/Xbox 360/PS3 and camping out in your parents’ basement for the summer may seem like a good idea, it’s not. Although I got to work at a private fishing club during one summer in college and spent two summers interning at Orvis, I still wish that I could have done something like interning with Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks. Being a lover of the outdoors, I can’t imagine many things better than spending a summer in Big Sky Country. In case you’re not familiar with what Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is, they’re Montana’s state agency charged with managing conservation of many of the state’s natural resources. Obviously, much of what they do is centered around managing fishing and hunting regulations, but they also have a huge responsibility of managing all of state parks (and there’s a whole lot to manage in a state like Montana).

I don’t think that we’ve featured any internships in Venture Capital yet, but today that’s going to change. From what I’ve heard, it seems like there just aren’t that many internships in VC to start with, and when there are, they get snapped up almost immediately. That’s why I was pretty interested when I got word that vSpring Capital is now recruiting for their Summer Internship Program. They’re based out of Salt Lake City, UT, and they’ve funded a portfolio of companies that work in the Software, Communications, Internet, and Life Sciences industries. I don’t recognize any of their portfolio companies by name, but some of them look pretty cool, so you should check them out.

Internship searching is hard enough on it’s own. When you have to worry about not being able to feed yourself over the summer because you might have to take an unpaid internship, it can become overwhelming. Obviously the best remedy is to find a paid internship, but that’s easier said than done. What you can do to ease your financial fears for the summer is to start paying attention to personal finance (that’s a link to Ramit Sethi’s I Will Teach You To Be Rich, because he’s the go to guy for that kind of stuff). You can also start using Thrive, a website that “brings all your credit card, checking, savings, retirement, and investment accounts into one place so you can easily see what you have, what you owe, and where you can grow.” They’re based out of New York City, and as far as I can tell they’re offering a product that is extremely similar to Mint, which has been on my radar for well over a year now. Still, Thrive appears to have developed a great tool for monitoring your personal finances, and since they’re hiring paid interns, we thought we should take a look at them.

The other day I got a fantastic restaurant recommendation over Twitter, and yesterday the same person gave me a great recommendation on internships with the company that she works at, Walker Sands Communications. They’re a well known Chicago based PR firm with a specialization in Technology. Their three areas of expertise are PR, Design, and Strategic Marketing. Walker Sands also puts a strong emphasis on the entrepreneurial mindset – many of the people on their staff have built companies of their own. I always find it hard to find a point of differentiation between PR firms because they’re obviously very good at making themselves look good. The staff is usually what separates one firm from another, but it’s hard to judge a staff without working with them. I’ve always found it helpful to check out the firm’s client list to see if there are any names that you could get excited about working with.

I hate shoes. Ok, that’s not really true, but after spending a week in Aruba over the holidays, it was a sad realization for me when I had to put my sneakers back on for the trip home to Chicago. I appreciate that I have boots that keep my feet warm and dry, slippers that are extremely comfortable, and basketball shoes that give me enough ankle support to prevent a sprain, but I still prefer the feeling of sand between my toes. I’m lucky. It’s a luxury to be able to enjoy the feeling of being shoeless. There are a lot of children who don’t know what it’s like to have a good pair of shoes to protect their feet. TOMS Shoes is a Santa Monica, CA based company that is trying to change that. They’re a shoe company, but they’re more than that. For every pair of shoes that TOMS Shoes sells, they give a pair of shoes to a child in need. So far, they’ve given over 200,000 pairs of shoes to children in places like Argentina, Ethiopia, and South Africa via “Shoe Drops.” They say that “changing life begins with a single step…” and we have to agree.

I think it was 6th or 7th grade when I started listening to Hip Hop. It started out with a few CD purchases, but soon enough I was listening to Hot 97 at every free moment. That included car rides with my parents. I still can’t believe that my parents drove around town with me sitting in the front seat ensuring that radio was dialed in to 97.1, but they let me get away with it. I’m sure that they weren’t too happy about it, but I guess that’s part of having kids. Anyway, Hot 97 is still my go to radio station when I’m back in the NYC metro area, and it still seems to be one of the most respected Hip Hop and R&B radio stations in the country. Today’s company definitely qualifies as cool. You may have never heard of Moosejaw, but the outdoor apparel manufacturer’s customer base is insanely loyal. They sell via retail, catalog, and online, and Every day they get rave reviews and customer photo submissions. Maybe it’s because Moosejaw has really good looking models, or maybe it’s the fact that Moosejaw offers homework help and dating advice to their customers. We’re not really sure what it is, but they’ve got their niche figured out. We waited a long time to write about entry level jobs at Moosejaw, and we’ve had to wait 9 months longer for them to post internships, but they finally have.

Happy New Year’s Eve! Today we’re going to take a look at some internships that couldn’t be more intertwined with New Year’s Eve. Times Square Alliance is a non-profit organization that “works to improve and promote Times Square – cultivating the creativity, energy and edge that have made the area an icon of entertainment, culture and urban life for over a century.” Times Square for New Year’s Eve isn’t on my list of things to do, but for many people it’s a big deal. I’m sure that there will be millions of people there tonight, so why not use tonight’s celebration to generate ideas for your internship search in the New Year. Somehow the Coca-Cola brand has been indelibly tied to the image of Santa Claus. In fact, there’s even an urban legend that the modern image of Santa Claus was created by The Coca-Cola Company. It’s not true, but the fact that many people believe it to be true speaks volumes about Coca-Cola’s branding prowess (dating all the way back to the 1930s). We considered a lot of Christmas themed companies to feature today, but we keep coming back to the image of St. Nick sipping on a glass bottle of Coke. Let’s see how you can find a job with Coke.

I’m back home for the holidays, and I hope most of you now are too. It’s wonderful to always have a safe place to go back to, but not everyone is so lucky. Victims of crime and abuse often don’t have anywhere to go. They’re often left with the choice of living in terror in a place that is familiar yet unsafe, or facing total uncertainty. Safe Horizon is a non-profit organization whose mission “is to provide support, prevent violence, and promote justice for victims of crime and abuse, their families, and communities.” They run 80 programs which “are located throughout the five boroughs of New York City in court houses, police precincts, schools, shelters, and community offices.” They may not be able to provide a safe place to go for all 350,000 victims whom they work with each year, but they find a way to support these people until they can find their way to a safe horizon.

Not only is it Friday, but it’s also a Snow Day here in Chicago! Judging from the map on The Weather Channel, there’s a good chance that you’re enjoying a Snow Day too. My favorite thing to do when school was cancelled was to go sledding, and I haven’t outgrown it yet. If downtown Chicago had a single decent hill, I’d be there as soon as I finish writing this. Of course, I’d have to stop and buy a sled first. In college it’s easy – you just “borrow” a tray from the dining hall, and that’s your sled for the winter, but when you’re an adult you need to take things a little more seriously. That’s why Hammerhead Sleds exists. They make sleds for big kids. Actually, that’s an understatement. They make the most bad ass sleds that I have ever seen. These sleds aren’t cheap, though. They run $349, but they sure look worth it.

Event marketing seems to be an area where a lot of internships end up being more like scams than internships. The reason is that event marketing internships are in high demand, so shady companies use ads for them to catch lots of candidates. There’s a reason that these types of internships are in high demand, and we think we’ve found some that exemplify the positive qualities of internships in event and experiential marketing. They’re with All Terrain, a Chicago-based event marketing firm. We first found out about them through Twitter, and did some more research to see what they’re all about. They’ve worked with top clients to do some pretty cool promotions. They even provide case studies on their website, which is a great thing to look for if you’re trying to determine the legitimacy of a company. There’s no better way to get a feel for a company than to take a look at the work that they’ve done and whom they’ve done it with.

We’ve catered to the PBS junkies before – we’ve covered internships at PBS and at WTTW11 in Chicago – and we’re going to do it again today. WGBH is a non-profit PBS affiliate based out of Boston that also happens to be the “single largest producer of PBS prime-time and online programming.” They started out by broadcasting the Boston Symphony Orchestra over the radio in 1951, but they’ve expanded to television and the web since. It’s really amazing how much of PBS’s programing comes out of WGBH. One of my all-time favorites was ZOOM, which is a little embarrassing to admit, since I was a bit old to be watching it at the time. Another interesting thing about WGBH that I picked up from Wikipedia is that they’re “considered a leader in services for people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, or visually impaired.” WGBH actually “invented television closed captioning, audio description (Descriptive Video Service), and created the Rear Window Captioning System for films.” As you can see, WGBH is an innovator not just in public television, but in all media, and probably a great place to work.

My mother sent me to Ballroom Dancing School in 4th and 5th grade. My friends and I called it “Monday Night Karate” at school to avoid being made fun of, but every monday night we got dressed up in a jacket and tie and had to act prim and proper and say things like, “Good evening Mrs. Jones. It’s a pleasure to see you again.” At least I didn’t have to wear white gloves like the girls did. The real goal of the weekly class was to teach us manners, but you would think that I would have learned a step or two. I didn’t. I am a terrible dancer, so I’m probably not the best person to tell you about Dancing in the Streets, a NYC based non-profit organization that “strives to illuminate the urban experience with free public performances and site-specific installations that examine the kinetic life and history of natural and architectural public spaces,” but I’m going to tell you about them anyway.

Since Thanksgiving is tomorrow, I have cooking on my mind. I’m trying to make sure that I have everything that I need, because Thanksgiving Day always comes with some essential ingredient or cooking implement missing. A run to the store for an ingredient usually isn’t a problem, but a meat thermometer or baster can be a little tougher to find. That’s why you might want to make a day before Thanksgiving stop by Williams-Sonoma, and while you’re at it, you might want to think about whether they offer internships. In case you’re not familiar with Williams-Sonoma, they’re “the premier specialty retailer of home furnishings in the United States.” Their brands include Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, PB Teen, Williams-Sonoma Home, and West Elm, and they “cover every room in the house: from the kitchen to the living room, bedroom, home office, and even the hall closet.” Williams-Sonoma, the brand, is best known for kitchen wares, which is why I associate them with Thanksgiving.

We’re big on innovation here. We don’t like talking about companies that are doing things the way that they’ve always done. They’re not only boring, but they’re also destined for failure. Look at the auto industry. You can blame the downfall of the Big 3 on a lot of things, but a lack of innovation has to be a big part of your argument. We’re trying to bring innovation to the way that you find internships, and there are hundreds of startups out there that are defined by innovation. It’s all around us. frog design is a global innovation firm. They “work with the world’s leading companies, helping them create and bring to market meaningful products, services, and experiences,” and they’ve been doing it for almost 40 years. They’ve worked with clients as vaired as Disney, GE, HP, Logitech, Microsoft, MTV, Seagate, Yahoo!, which goes to show you that they’re not easy to pigeonhole. frog design is based out of San Francisco, and they have offices (or as they call them, studios) in Austin, New York, San Jose, Seattle, Milan, Amsterdam, Stuttgart, and Shanghai

Back when I was doing research on Seth Godin’s internship offerings, I came a blog called Joel on Software. I quickly noticed that Joel’s company, Fog Creek Software, had internships in New York City, and with a little more research I found out that they’re some of the hottest internships out there. Fog Creek’s Summer internships fill up fast, so I had to wait until now to tell you about them. Fog Creek is now accepting and reviewing applications for 2009!
