Maybe you haven’t noticed, but writing has become commoditized on the Internet. Good writing still stands out (which is why you’re reading this, right?), but when you’re looking for basic information, sometimes the stuff that Demand Media and other similar companies churn out is good enough. Now there are companies taking it to the next level. Narrative Science is one that we featured a while back, and today we’re going to take a look at Durham, NC based StatSheet. They have built “a collection of fan-centric, sports sites designed to give sports fans the information and analysis they want when and how they want it.” But there’s a twist. They have a dirty, little not-so-secret. Their “technology platform generates content automatically in real-time.” In other words, the computers are doing all of the reporting and content generation. That’s why StatSheet is able to have sites devoted to every single one of the 345 Division I college basketball teams.

I’m sure that you keep hearing about the green job revolution and how environmentalist ideals are actually going to start fueling economic growth (instead of hindering it), yet you’re probably wondering where all of these opportunities are. Most of the green internships that I come across are either in the non-profit or energy sectors. However, if you look a little more closely there are a lot more options—some of which have been around a lot longer than you would have expected. Take The Cadmus Group in Watertown, MA for example. They were founded in 1983 to “take advantage of a change in how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) procured contractor support,” and they’ve evolved into a leading environmental consulting firm. They’ve done this by gathering “the best minds across a variety of disciplines to help address the nation’s most pressing environmental, energy, and health challenges.

The internship search is all about your future, so it’s not really something that you want to associate with death. Still, you can find opportunity in even the saddest situations, and that’s exactly what 1000Memories has done. They’re a San Francisco, CA based startup that offers an online “place to remember loved ones.” They’ve built a truly impressive platform for doing so, and they’re offering it for free. Their business model doesn’t appear to have been hammered out completely yet, but it seems that they’re leaning towards a freemium/upsell model. The site was created by three friends who had lost loved ones, so they are their users and they’re fully committed to building “a better way to bring people together and build something special in their [loved ones’] memory.”

When is the last time that you felt that you made a difference? For me it was yesterday when I got an e-mail about how a number of recent grads landed jobs with an employer I featured a few months back. Hopefully it wasn’t too long ago for you either, but if it was, you might want to check out Citizen Effect. They’re a Washington, DC based non-profit that “connects Citizen Philanthropists to the poorest of the poor communities around the world.” What’s a “Citizen Philantrhopist?” It’s someone who isn’t happy just making a donation, but wants to do more. They don’t have to be rich, but they do have to be willing to dig in for the cause. Citizen Effect “allows people to identify a project they believe in, raise capital through a variety of innovative tools, and maintain a direct and lasting relationship with their partner communities.” Sounds like a good idea to me.

Today is One Day, One Job’s 3rd Anniversary! We’re celebrating by launching a Success Stories section. If you have a success story or just want to send along some feedback, e-mail me today at willy@onedayonejob.com.
It’s been fun running through the Inc. 500 in search of companies with internship opportunities, but the time has come to move on. I’m sure that I’ll eventually revisit a number of the companies that seemed cool but didn’t appear to have the right opportunities when I looked at them; however, we’re going to give this “series” a fitting finish by looking at #500 AtTask. They’re an Orem, UT based company that “develops project and portfolio management software that increases efficiency for businesses of all sizes.” They’ve seen 604% growth over the past three years, which puts them at $19 million in revenue for last year. Online collaboration is a huge and growing area, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see AtTask continue to put up exceptional growth rates.

Hope you’re all wishing the veterans in your life a Happy Veterans Day! If you’re interested in related internship opportunities, you should check out internships at the Department of Veteran Affairs.
If you’ve been following One Day, One Internship for any time at all, you’re probably sick of my telling you how important online marketing is. You’d love to be able to get an internship in this burgeoning field, but you have no idea where to start. I mean, not many colleges teach this stuff. Luckily, there are plenty of free online resources that can get you up to speed. There are also quite a few businesses that exist solely to teach people online marketing. One of these is Gaithersburg, MD based Lurn. They are an Inc. 500 company that has seen 609% three year growth to $7.1 million in annual revenue. Their business consists of providing “a range of products and services including online training courses and live events on a variety of online marketing topics, online communities and publications for Internet marketers, and e-learning technology platforms for educators of business and marketing professionals.” In other words, they teach people how to do what they’re doing to grow their business.

One of the fun things about researching companies every day is that sometimes I get to learn more about my neighbors. If I hadn’t been cruising through the Inc 500, I probably never would have taken a second look at the building just a block from me, which I can see right now out my office window. However, it happens to house Rise Interactive, a Chicago, IL based “full-service Internet marketing company” that services “companies of all sizes, from startups to the Fortune 500.” They’ve seen 658% growth over the past three, and that led them to $2.6 million in annual revenue last year. Their site isn’t as flashy as many of the interactive agencies that we’ve featured in the past, but that makes sense when you look at the services that they offer—they seem much more focused on results-based areas like SEO, Paid Search, Display Advertising, and Affiliate Marketing.

Unfortunately, I can’t report on the election results because I’m writing this a day in advance because I will have flown to Munich last night. However, I can guarantee that regardless of how the people voted, green energy is still going to be a huge market. Renewables are big, and they’re becoming more and more accessible to average people. Alteris Renewables is a Wilton, CT based company that offers affordable renewable energy solutions to residential, commercial, and educational customers. They also have offices in Stonington, CT; Stamford, CT; New Bedford, MA; Albany, NY; Saratoga Springs, NY; New York, NY; Parsippany, NJ; Malvern, PA; Providence, RI; Waitsfield, VT; and Montpelier, VT. Yes, they pretty much have the Northeast covered. They also have the awesome growth rate covered, as they’re #417 on the Inc. 500 with 710% three-year growth to $56.4 million in revenue last year.

Happy Election Day! If you want my take on the political process, you should read my post from Election Day 2008 when I took a look at internships at The Onion. Today we’re going to take a slightly more serious approach by focusing on Omaha, NE based Election Systems & Software. That means that we’re taking a break from the Inc. 500 today, but it makes sense. Election Systems & Software is the largest manufacturer of voting machines in the United States—they “serve four countries, 41 states with more than 4,000 election offices and three states for business services.” In other words, if you vote today, there’s a good chance that you’ll do it on an Election Systems & Software machine.

Today is Job Action Day 2010. Check out our post on Creating Opportunity with No Experience.
I’m guessing that the large majority of you lived in a dorm or some other form of student housing during your time at college. They’re not typically the most luxurious places to live, but they get the job done. And as more and more people pursue higher education, more and more dorms are going to need to be built. That must be why DeSoto, TX based Warrior Group has been growing so quickly. They’ve seen 731% three-year growth to $124 million, which puts them at #405 on the Inc. 500. Their revenue is actually flat over last year, but you can’t blame them for hitting a plateau during a brutal recession that has hit the construction industry especially hard. I guess the market for “permanent modular construction and construction management services” has held up well—Warrior Group has become “the largest woman-owned, minority-owned construction services company in the U.S.”

I’ve never been one to listen to classical music. I know it’s supposed to make you smarter, but for me, the more mindless the music, the better. Then again, I’ve never really given classical music a try. I’ll be going to a good friend’s piano recital in a few weeks, so maybe that will change me forever. If that does happen, I’m sure that I’ll aspire to visit the New York Philharmonic (also known as the Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York) at some point. It’s been around since 1842, which makes it the “oldest symphony orchestra in the United States.” The New York Philharmonic performs at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City’s Lincoln Center, and the current music director is Alan Gilbert.

I get asked all the time about how students with no experience or connections can get an internship job in sports (click that link for all of the sports related opportunities that we’ve featured in the past). The truth is that I don’t have a good answer. Internships in sports are in low supply and high demand, which means that you probably need more than just a solid résumé to get your foot in the door. It also means that there are a ton of scammers who use “sports marketing internships” to lure wet behind the ears students into internship scams. Fortunately, there are some legitimate options out there. Take Reach Sports Marketing Group for example, they’re an Eden Prairie, MN based company that made the Inc. 500 with 806% three-year growth and $2.5 million in annual revenue. Their business is pretty simple, they sell local advertisements on “digital signage screens and direct mail coupon sheets.” They have digital signage in more than 300 recreation and fitness centers across the country, and there’s a decent chance that they’re in the gyms at your school.

You probably don’t even notice it happening around you, but the world of marketing is changing. Companies used to pay to be seen, then they started paying for clicks. Now it’s all about pay for performance. Advertisers want to know that they’re getting a significant return on their investment. Largo, FL (it’s near Tampa, not Key Largo) based The Media Crew is yet another Inc. 500 company that is growing quickly because they see the future. The Media Crew has been around since 1999, but they’ve really experienced great growth over the past three years—810% to $4.5 million in annual revenue, if you want to be exact. By helping generate leads for other businesses, they’ve been able to become a substantial business on their own.

Believe it or not, we’ve actually covered a fair number of internships in Utah, but I think today’s company might have the most personality of them so far. Neutron Interactive is a Salt Lake City based interactive agency that is taking online business to the next level. Neutron Interactive is an Inc 500 company that has grown 812% over the past three years. Their annual revenue was $9.5 million last year, so they’re quite big when compared to many of the other interactive agencies that also made the list.

Yesterday we talked about one way that brick and mortar businesses are catching up with their online counterparts, and today we’re going to dig deeper into how the Internet is changing the landscape for local businesses. In the past we’ve look at companies like Yelp, Groupon, Yext, and even Google that help local businesses do a better job of marketing themselves. Today we’re going to take a look at Demandforce, a San Francisco, CA based company that helps “service businesses thrive in the Internet economy.” How do they do this? Demandforce provides software-as-service that transforms a business’ customers into a powerful social network. By encouraging referrals and reviews from existing customers, the software helps attract new customers. While it also helps businesses retain existing customers by making it easy to stay in touch with them.

Although I’m not big on shopping, I love shopping online. It makes everything easier—as long as the online store has free shipping and a generous return policy. E-commerce is also great for businesses because it reduces costs and makes data collection far easier. With that said, the retail experience can’t be replaced, and it isn’t going anywhere for a long time. That means that retail stores need to be able to collect data as effectively as online stores if they want to stay competitive. This can be a tough problem to conquer, but Retail Solutions, which is headquartered in Mountain View, CA, has an… er… solution. They “develop and deliver a comprehensive suite of award-winning software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions that turn downstream data, such as point-of-sale (POS), supply chain, merchandiser feedback and category data, into actionable visibility into the store and onto the shelf.” They work with both retailers and consumer packaged good companies to track sales and provide data, which enables both sides to operate more efficiently.

Hopefully you’ve started to notice some trends as we’ve worked our way through the Inc. 500 list of the country’s fastest growing private companies. These trends are really important for you as an internship seeker, because they are a strong indicator of where economic growth is happening. Even if your major doesn’t match up with the trends, you should start thinking about how you can adapt and start educating yourself to be a good candidate to work in growing industries like performance marketing, which we’re going to talk about today. Marketing and advertising campaigns have a single goal: increasing sales. Yet, until recently it has been extremely hard to link campaigns with results. Now you can not only track results, but you can actually pay advertisers only for sales that they’ve influenced. That’s what IMM Interactive is all about (they just changed their name from Intermark Media). They’re a Woodbury, NY (Long Island) based company that has spent the last decade “helping advertisers and agencies of all shapes and sizes execute strategic digital marketing campaigns that expand reach, define perceptions and drive revenue growth.”

We may only hear about the big ones like the Gulf Oil Spill, but environmental crimes happen every day. There’s too much money to be made in exploiting the environment, whether it’s dumping toxic waste or trading in products from illegally harvested endangered species. Unfortunately, world governments aren’t nearly as effective at policing environmental criminals as they should be. That’s why Environmental Investigation Agency exists. They’re a Washington, DC based non-profit organization that “committed to promoting environmental conservation by investigating and exposing environmental crimes around the world, and then working to stop these crimes.” They’ve operating internationally since 1984, and they started in DC in 1989.

I’m constantly amazed by the beauty/cosmetics/consumer products industries. They seem to be constantly coming out with new stuff, yet most of their product developments are just marketing fluff. Yes, some soaps are better for your skin than others, and some shampoos smell better than others, but I rarely get the sense that a new product actually does its job better than its predecessor. Still, we all have our brand preferences. For me, I find the best way to wash my face is with a simple bar of Dove soap, but if you take your face washing a little more seriously, you may want to check out Bellevue, WA based Clarisonic (their parent company is Pacific Bioscience Laboratories, but all of the branding seems to be focused on Clarisonic). They “develop and market products that use sonic frequency to cleanse skin and help reduce dry patches, blemishes, and wrinkles.” Now, sonic technology isn’t something that you’re going to find in a face wash, so maybe there’s something more to Clarisonic’s facial brush skin care system. I’ve never tried it, but if buying it only gets you to spend more time washing your face, it’s already done its job.

Headphones are pretty much a modern necessity. I have a bunch of devices that I carry around with me whenever I’m working from a different location, and they all have headphone jacks. By plugging in I can hear phone conversations better, tune out when I’m trying to focus, or educate myself while sitting on the train. Despite this, I still kind of hate headphones because I always lose them and whenever I wrap them around my phone the phone immediately rings and I have to unwrap them. I also spend a ton of time untangling my headphones. These are problems that probably can’t be fixed, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t innovation in the headphone industry. Tucson, AZ based JLab Audio is a perfect example. They are yet another fast growing Inc. 500 company, and they “design and market portable audio products and accessories, including the JBuds line of earbuds and the B-Flex Portable USB Laptop Speaker.” They were only founded in 2005, but they’ve already reached $3 million in annual revenue.

I’ve been watching a lot of Mad Men on Netflix lately, and I’m almost through the first season. It’s pretty cool to see what an ad agency looked like 50 years ago, since things seem to be changing pretty rapidly now. Obviously, drinking and smoking are out at work, but what’s way more interesting is how many upstarts are taking on big name clients. Yes, the old guard is still going strong, but companies like The1stMovement, which was founded in 2006, are tearing it up. They’re based in Pasadena, CA and Denver, CO, and they’ve seen 1,077% three-year growth to $2.3 million in annual revenue. They are a full-service digital advertising agency, and they actually admit to putting a mastery of technology before creativity. Sometimes the medium is more important than the art, and that definitely seems to be the case when it comes interactive advertising.

Liquidity can be a big issue in college. Your parents gave you money for food, but it’s all in the form of “meals” at the dining hall. As far as I know, there’s no market for converting these meals into cash, so you’re stuck on campus with the same slop that you’ve been eating daily for past 7 weeks. In the real world, liquidity can be a much bigger issue. There are plenty of people who are millionaires on paper but can’t pay their bills because all of the assets they hold are illiquid or hard to sell quickly. SecondMarket is a New York City and Palo Alto, CA based company that provides the largest secondary market for illiquid assets. In other words they help buyers find sellers and sellers find buyers for a variety of financial products. It’s not like eBay where you can turn Pez dispensers into cash—it’s for serious financial instruments that just don’t have thriving markets like publicly traded stocks do. SecondMarket is yet another Inc. 500 company—they came in at #270 with 1,156% three-year growth to $35 million in annual revenue.

Thanks to all of you who wished me a happy birthday. It’s great hearing from readers! And if you didn’t e-mail me, why not take a few minutes to let me know why you love One Day, One Internship or how I can make it better. Just hit reply.
I moved to a new apartment two weeks ago, but I’ve been forced to work out of my local Starbucks since then because AT&T likes to make you wait a couple of weeks until they install your Internet. It was fun watching people stop in as part of their morning routine, and I also ran into a few friends who apparently frequent this particular Starbucks (I had no idea). And I got offered a job. Some CEO saw that I was reading SEOmoz’s Blog, and asked if I did SEO. When I told him yes, he asked if I needed a job. I obviously said no, but I did give him my card. There are two points to this story. The first is that serendipity can happen in the job or internship search, but nobody is going to offer you a position if they see you browsing Monster.com at Starbucks. You need to be working on something interesting and valuable. People will notice, and they’ll want to hire you. The second is that this guy has some needs at his company, which happens to be #262 on the Inc. 500. The company is named Cellit, and it’s based here in Chicago, IL. They provide “mobile solutions to all by combining world-class customer service and marketing know-how with engineering expertise.” And they must be doing it well—they’ve seen 1,187% growth over the past three years to $2.5 million in revenue.

Today is my 26th birthday! If you love One Day, One Internship, today is a great day to say thank you. Make my birthday awesome by sending me something from my Amazon Wishlist or writing me a note at willy@onedayonejob.com telling me how One Day, One Internship is helping you.
Last year we looked at internships at Charm City Cakes for my birthday, but today we’re going continue with a theme that we focused on yesterday—advertising. More specifically, we’re going to continue looking at advertising that reaches you in places where you might not expect it. Yesterday we talked about billboards and taxi cabs, but today’s company, StoreBoard Media, likes to you reach you via an even less traditional medium. They’re a New York City based company that has exclusive rights to place advertising on security pedestals in many retail stores across the United States. What’s a security pedestal? It’s that thing that beeps when you’re shoplifting—or the clerk forgot to take the tag off of your merchandise. Apparently, it’s a pretty decent place to put advertising. Why else would StoreBoard Media be seeing 1229% three-year growth to $5.2 million in annual revenue?

If you’d been through Found Your Career (our online job search course), you’d know all about what I call the “always looking approach.” It means using your surrounding to generate new internship search ideas. One of the best sources for those ideas is advertising. It’s not quite as good as the Inc. 500 (which led me to today’s company), but I love learning about new businesses by flipping through magazines, watching tv, looking at billboards, and browsing Facebook. Show Media is a New York based advertising agency that focuses on reaching people on the move. That means billboards, taxi cabs, events, and more. Most of the growth in advertising to be in areas with easily measurable results, but Show Media is bucking that trend as they’ve grown 1296% over the past three years to $9.2 million in annual revenue.

So, yesterday we looked at a creative/interactive agency called Modea. Apparently interactive media is a good place to be, because The Visionaire Group, which is based in Los Angeles, CA, also made the Inc. 500. They reached $5 million in annual revenue last year, and they’re doing it with “websites, banner advertising, and application development.” The Visionaire Group seems less focused on offering a full-range of services, and more focused on doing a few things well. Their website consists of only a home page, but it will give you an idea of what kind of work they do.

Believe it or not, after three years I’m still running a one-man show here at One Day, One Job/Internship. I do all the design, web development, marketing, business development, writing, SEO, and everything else that it takes to run the business. I can’t even imagine how nice it would be to have an agency or in-house team of specialists—you know, people who actually are experts in the given field—work on some of the stuff for me. Even though we’re profitable, I don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon. But if it was, I might consider using Modea. They are a Blacksburg, VA based “digital services agency” that creates “results-driven digital content and campaigns for a diverse group of recognizable consumer brands.” Ok, maybe One Day, One Internship isn’t a recognizable consumer brand quite yet, but one day (one internship). I’m still running through the Inc. 500, and Modea came in at #221 with 1335% three-year growth to $3.5 million in revenue.

When it comes to Internet marketing, one of the most important pieces is something that you’ve probably never heard of. It’s called a landing page. For all intents and purposes, it’s the page that you land on when you click an ad, search result, link, or anything else that is part of a marketing campaign. In reality a landing page should be much more focused than that. It should have a clear call to action and few, if any, options to do anything but the desired action. If you’re going to spend money advertising your product, you want people to buy that product—not browse around your website. The science behind landing pages is actually really intense, which is why many companies use software to run, track, and optimize their landing pages. Ion Interactive is a Boca Raton, FL based company (with an office in Cambridge, MA) that develops software that “creates, tests and optimizes advanced landing experiences.” They are yet another Inc. 500 company—the numbers are $2.2 million in annual revenue and 1438% three-year growth.

Usually when a company has a weird name and no website of their own, you start to think that they may be some kind of internship scam. Not having a home page for you company is a big warning sign; however, I’m not too worried about Quidsi. They’re a Jersey City, NJ company that made it to the Inc. 500 with 1535% three-year growth to $182.5 million in annual revenue. That’s two orders of magnitude great than most of the other Inc. 500 companies we’ve looked at. As far as I can tell, it’s all coming from two businesses—Diapers.com and Soap.com. Both are retail sites that allow you to buy household goods easily online. Although I’m sure there are a lot of other reasons for their success, you have to think that Quidsi has truly reaped the benefits of owning some top notch domain names.
