I’ve always been an animal lover, but it’s turned up a few notches since Garçon came into my life. It’s amazing how much happiness a pet can bring to people, and it’s amazing what a good home can do for a pet. Unfortunately, 3-4 million animals are euthanized every year in the U.S. Found Animals is a Los Angeles, CA based nonprofit that is dedicated to changing this. The organization’s goal is to “find the big ideas that advance the safety of animals in our homes, our shelters, and everywhere in between.”

When I was a junior in college, I broke my wrist. It was actually a lucky break because it healed completely… and my pathetic inability to cut my own food attracted a lovely lady whom I’ll soon be marrying. Still, the medical care that I received was abysmal. It started when the orthopedist told me that he didn’t remember if he could cast me before sending me for a CAT scan (that’s your job dude), but the most frustrating part was when I went to get follow up X-rays to see if the fracture was healed. I ensured at least four times that they were sending the X-rays to my doctor at home who I felt was more qualified to look at them. After waiting a few weeks for my doctor to get back to me, I followed up and he told me that the hospital never sent the x-rays (they just put them in a file). I called the hospital, and they told me that I had to drive over to sign a release so that they could send them to my doctor. Face meet palm. A lot of people’s frustrations with the healthcare system can be solved with technology, and that’s exactly what Practice Fusion is doing. They’re a San Francisco, CA based company that provides “a free, web-based Electronic Health Record (EHR) application to physicians.”

I’ve never been on a cruise ship, and I’m not looking to change that any time soon. I realize that cruises are the ultimate vacation for some people, but they’re just not for me (especially after hearing about food poisoning outbreaks and the Costa Concordia disaster). Still, I respect the brilliance of the cruise ship. Travelers can sample a variety of destinations without having to think about logistics or anything else really. When you can combine hospitality, transportation, and gambling all in one, you have pretty good foundation for a business. The second largest cruise company in the world is Royal Caribbean Cruises, which is based in Miami, FL and owns the following cruise lines: Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Pullmantur Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises and CDF Croisières de France. Those all contribute to nearly $7 billion in annual revenue.

Have you ever grabbed a photograph off the Internet for an assignment? I’ll bet most students have done this at some point. But how many actually think about whether or not they have the right to use that image? It may not seem important, but what if that photo is being published in a newspaper, magazine, or blog? That’s why companies like Seattle, WA based Corbis exist. They buy and sell the rights for creative intellectual property. They have a massive catalog, so if you needed an image of fly fisherman with a mountain in the background at sunset, they have what you need. In other words they bring efficiency to a market that would otherwise be extremely fragmented and inefficient.
