I have no idea how much of the Thanksgiving story that I learned in elementary school is factual. I assumed that the whole thing about Squanto teaching the Pilgrims to fertilize corn with fish was a bunch of bunk, but Wikipedia says that it’s pretty much true. We’ve come a long way from the kind of subsistence agriculture that got our country started. Farming these days is far more science than art. Crop Quest is a perfect example. They’re a Dodge City, KS based “innovation-driven leader in crop consulting and agricultural production management and solutions with a clear focus on [their] customers’ production goals and budgets.” In a weird way, they’re kind of like the modern day Squanto.

GTM Sportswear

There’s no time that sports apparel gets more attention than during the Olympics. There are the crazy “barracuda skin” racing suits for the swimmers, the bejeweled leotards for the gymnasts, and the ever controversial bikinis (or pants and long sleeved shirts if it’s under 60 degrees) for the women’s beach volleyball players. One might think that every uniform is chosen to maximize physical performance, but there’s research to show that what you wear/how you look affects your mental performance (See: Red is a winning color – GO BIG RED!). While they might not be outfitting our Olympians, GTM Sportswear is a Manhattan, KS based company that helps athletes perform better by looking better. They specialize “in providing custom-embellished uniforms, warm-ups, and practice apparel for college, school, and club sports teams nationwide.”

The next car I get will definitely have some sort of iPhone integration. Right now I still rely on one of those tape to AUX thingies, which means that I usually just listen to the radio. I couldn’t find any good stats on the topic, but I have to think that listeners in cars are what’s keeping radio going. But according to Entercom, radio is still going strong. You would expect them to say that though, considering that they’re “one of the five largest radio broadcasting companies in the United States.” Entercom is headquartered in Bala Cynwyd, PA, but they operate more than “100 stations in 23 markets, including San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Denver, Portland, Sacramento and Kansas City.”

Having trouble getting employers to notice you? Ever consider using Facebook ads to reach them? Surprisingly, it works. Even for internships.

I thought that I had already cherry picked most of the companies that are hiring interns from Fast Company‘s list of Most Innovative Companies, but there were a few that I chose to save for later. Populous is one of them. They’re a Kansas City based design firm (with offices in Brisbane, London, New York, Knoxville, Denver, Singapore, Nashville, Auckland, and Hong Kong) that specializes in “creating environments that draw people and communities together for unforgettable experiences.” I know that verbiage is a little flowery, so to put it more simply, Populous offers comprehensive design and architectural services that focus on major venues like sports stadiums, arenas, exhibition centers, and similar large spaces. They recently finished Target Field for the Minnesota Twins, and before that it was the new Yankee Stadium. I’ve seen the new Yankee Stadium in person, and it’s incredible. MITRE

Not many of the companies on Fast Company’s list of “The World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies” are non-profit, and not many non-profits generate over $1 billion in annual revenue, but MITRE fits both criteria. I know that many of you want to see fewer technical internships, but I’ve also noticed that most of the non-profit internships that we feature on weekends aren’t very technical. MITRE, which has headquarters in Bedford, MA and McLean, VA offers an exception. They are an “organization chartered to work in the public interest” through “expertise in systems engineering, information technology, operational concepts, and enterprise modernization.” They do this work through “four Federally Funded Research and Development Centers,” with one focused on the Department of Defense, one on the Federal Aviation Administration, one on the Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, and one for the Department of Homeland Security.

After I graduated from college, I decided to take a responsible approach to my personal finances (and I wish I had done it sooner, so all of you current students listen up). It took me a while to get my act together, but once I did I started investing in the stock market through Scottrade, an online discount brokerage company that is headquartered in St. Louis, MO. (And before I go on with more information about Scottrade’s jobs, I need to give Ramit Sethi’s book, I Will Teach You To Be Rich, a plug because it just came out and is the best personal finance resource for young people that I’ve come across.) So, Scottrade allows me to buy and sell stocks at 7 bucks a pop. They also have a solid web interface that gives you access to all kinds of information, and they have 399 branches with helpful employees to answer you questions and get your accounts opened. Natural Home Magazine

Sustainability is big. A lot of people (and companies) are jumping on the green bandwagon for a wide variety of reasons. One place that a lot of people are starting to adopt green practices is in the home. That makes sense, because our homes reflect who we are. If we care about the environment, then we certainly want to show it in where we live. It’s also important to make sure that our homes are a healthy place to live. I certainly didn’t live in a “natural home” in college, and I’m sure that most of you don’t either, but I wouldn’t be surprised if more and more campuses are starting green initiatives for on-campus housing. Whether you’re building your own green home or you’re helping your college make decisions about a new initiative, where do you go for information on green living? Natural Home Magazine is one place. Garmin

Ok, it might be politically incorrect to celebrate Columbus Day, but it was just about the only holiday that I had off when I was in college. Maybe it just happened to be a convenient weekend for Fall Break, but I still can’t believe that I didn’t have class on Columbus Day, but did have class on Labor Day (when I went to a School of Industrial and Labor Relations). Anyway, Christopher Columbus wasn’t much of a navigator. He had no idea where he was going, and he tried to take the long way around the world. Still, his ineptitude was the reason that he “discovered” the Americas. Had Garmin been around in the 1490s, Columbus never would have ended up where he did. Then again, the existence of a company built on GPS technology would have changed a lot of things for famous explorers five centuries ago. (Much like the existence of iPods – like the one we’re giving away – would have changed the world for musicians back then.)

Major League Baseball

I never thought that moving to Chicago would prolong the baseball season for me. Living in the New York City area gave me 13 straight years of October baseball, and now that I’ve left, both Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium will remain empty for the rest of the fall before they eventually face demolition. It’s lucky for me that I’m now living in a new city that happens to have two teams that are still in it. I get a 14th straight year of local baseball in October! Playoff baseball is by far the most exciting baseball of the year, but it also means that season will soon be over. Those of you who are baseball fans know how long the winter seems when there is only hot stove chatter to keep you entertained while you wait for pitchers and catchers to report to Spring Training. Although it may seem ridiculously early, now is the time to start thinking about your Summer plans if you want to intern with Major League Baseball. It’s pretty obvious that there is a lot of demand for these internships, so you need to make sure that you’re on the ball and beat all of the deadlines.
