Today, we’re going to look at Draftfcb, which happens to be the world’s third oldest ad agency (although there have been a few mergers and acquisitions inbetween). They often do contracts in the nine-figures, so they’re kind of a big deal.

I was blessed to grow up in Chicago during a time when the Bulls were the most dominant sports team in the world. I was crazy about each and every player on the team, but was especially obsessed with BJ Armstrong. Now, I know that you may be thinking that BJ is a funny choice, given the more obvious picks of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and the likes, but there was something about BJ’s work ethic and drive that made me fall in love with him. So when I saw him eating dinner at a restaurant near my house, I could hardly contain myself. Now imagine yourself eating dinner everyday next to your favorite Olympic heroes. As an intern at the U.S. Olympic Committee you could do just that, plus breakfast and lunch.

Today we’ve found a number of internships for the academic minded soon-to-be-interns. If you’re fascinated by public policy or foreign relations and would like to work in a non-profit, you’ll definitely want to read on. The Brookings Institution is a non-profit public policy organization based in Washington, DC. They conduct high-quality, independent research and, based on that research, they provide innovative, practical recommendations that advance three broad goals: strengthen American democracy; foster the economic and social welfare, security and opportunity of all Americans; and secure a more open, safe, prosperous and cooperative international system.

If you’re a basketball fan, you’re probably gearing up for March Madness. Some of you are probably hoping that your school’s team will be on the right side of the bubble come Selection Sunday, while others are celebrating a ticket that has already been punched (Cornell!). We’re much bigger college basketball fans than we are pro basketball fans, but internships in college basketball aren’t a common thing. That’s why this post isn’t about them, but it is about basketball. Many NBA, WNBA, and NBADL Teams have summer internship programs that will give you the opportunity to decide if a career in sports is something that you really want to pursue.

Lately, we’ve seen a lot of search activity for internships in the video game industry, so we thought we’d deliver what many of you have been yearning for. We featured Insomniac Games’ entry-level jobs on One Day, One Job a couple months ago, and we were thoroughly impressed by their job offerings. When we decided to revisit them looking for internships, it was no big surprise to us that their offerings appear to be some of the best summer internships that we’ve seen.

Kids are often more realistic about their career aspirations than adults are. They want to be firefighters, policemen, and teachers – professions that are in constant, steady demand. More ambitious children might want a job as a doctor or veterinarian – still steady, but requiring a significant investment in education. The one exception is the kids who wanted to be astronauts. Since the beginning of the space program, there have only been 321 astronauts selected. Ever. Becoming an astronaut isn’t easy, but you don’t need to take one specific path to be selected as an astronaut – pilots, schoolteachers, doctors, scientist, and engineers have all been astronauts. Whether you’re working towards becoming an astronaut or you’re looking to have a meaningful impact on the space program NASA has a variety of interesting internships; in fact, we could spend the next week featuring individual NASA internships.

Thinking about waiting tables instead of looking an internship? If your reasons for this are more that you’re interested in hospitality management, and less that you just want to put some money in the bank, then the Chicago based Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises internship program might be a great alternative. LEYE is what some call a restaurant empire with over 70 restaurants and approximately 5,000 employees. Managing one restaurant is hard enough, but somehow founder and CEO Richard Melman has been able to do it over and over again.

Last week we wrote about Sarasota, FL based Animal Replacement Technologies on One Day, One Job. There was no indication that they were hiring new grads, but we really liked their story, so we encouraged our readers to take a look and inquire about jobs if they were so inclined. Soon after we posted, Animal Replacement Technologies founder Dr. Christopher Sakezles left a comment inviting our readers to apply for summer internships in engineering with his company (and also asking potential applicants not to cold call, but to e-mail instead). It was exciting for us to have one of Inc. Magazine’s Entrepreneur of the Year Reader Favorites leave a comment on our website; moreover, we realized that it was a perfect opportunity for us to share the excitement with our internship searching readers. If you read One Day, One Job as well, we apologize for sometimes being redundant and talking about the same companies on both sites, but we want to make sure that the internships we talk about are some of the most interesting and most worthwhile out there.

New is good. New clothes, new computers, new experiences, new dorms, new friends. Why stick with something that’s been around for a while when you can have something bigger and better? How about character? It might seem ridiculous to some, but there are a lot of people who actually like old stuff – especially old buildings. There’s something that speaks to them about maintaining a vision of the past by preserving the architectural high points that our predecessors reached. If you’re one of those people who doesn’t always think that newer is better, an internship at the National Trust for Historic Preservation might make your summer really enjoyable. If you’re sick of seeing the old buildings on your college campus demolished in favor of new designs that are often uglier, less functional, and extremely expensive, then keep reading.

If you’re a college student who is looking for an internship now, you’re probably just a little too young to have appreciated the unbridled free downloading of everything under copypright that those of us who are a bit older enjoyed in college. Those were the days of Napster and AudioGalaxy, before the RIAA started suing students and instilling fear in the hearts of downloaders everywhere. If anything good has come out of the whole situation with student downloading, it is that there is probably a slightly better general understanding of copyright laws than there used to be (we admit it, we had to look really hard for that silver lining). If you take an especially strong interest in copyright, you might be interested in Creative Commons, a non-profit organization that addresses many of the issues that college students face when it comes to understanding how copyright works. Creative Commons isn’t going to get you off the hook when you get served a DMCA notice via your school’s administration, but they are helping to spread the ideology of openness when it comes to intellectual property.

We launched One Day, One Internship less than 2 weeks ago, and we’re already stuck with an extra post because of Leap Day. Ok, it’s not really an extra post, since we write every day regardless of the date. Still, it’s a little disappointing that every 4th year the man manages to squeeze an extra day of productivity out of us – whether it be at school or work. We’ve never checked, but we wonder whether school’s give students an extra day off sometime during a Leap Year. Anybody have answers? Leave them in the comments. We wish Leap Day was a worldwide day off that would allow everyone to find time to do those things that you never get around to doing. Instead, it’s just another day, unless, of course, you’re a college student with no Friday classes. Staying with the theme of Leap Day, we’re going to take a look at LeapFrog and their internships.

The competition for internships in consulting and investment banking seems to have reached a level of insanity. A lot of college students are intent on chasing the big names, and ignore great opportunities at firms that have a little less brand recognition. Navigant Consulting is one of those firms that should not be overlooked during your consulting internship search, especially if your interests align with their specialties.

Today’s company needs no introduction, since there’s a good chance that you arrived at our site through one of the Facebook ad campaigns that we’re running. You’ve probably heard a lot about Facebook’s valuation and whether or not it’s very realistic, but that’s not as big a deal to an intern as it might be to someone who is looking for a full-time, entry-level job at Facebook. Since the only internships that we’ve found at Facebook are in software development, we think it’s more important to mention that Facebook is the second largest PHP-based website in the world. The things that they do with their databases to meet constant demand for up-to-the-second accuracy will awe even the most smug computer geeks. This post on the Facebook Blog about Facebook’s new East coast data center tells you all about how they’ve accomplished scaling their systems to stay ahead of demand.

Are you still arguing with your parents over whether Summer should be for internships or vacations? Why not make it both? Hospitality management is an enormous industry with myriad internship opportunities. You can go somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit, get an inside view on the tourist experience, and call it an internship.
Don’t get us wrong, an internship at a hotel is going to be hard work with long demanding hours likely, but it’s also an internship experience unlike office jobs that consist mostly of powerpoint, copiers, and coffee. Well, if you’re going to intern at a hotel or resort, it might as well be top notch, right? Why not the Four Seasons?

We’ve written about quite a few advertising jobs on One Day, One Job, so we thought we’d start off the second week of One Day, One Internship with what is clearly a popular genre. We’ve had our eye on archer>malmo for a while. They’re a full service marketing and advertising agency located in Memphis, TN, and they’ve got internships. Their web site is really simple and only has a few pages, but we love their home page. It revolves through their portfolio and includes one sentence explanations of the campaigns as they are shown – it’s both fun and educational to just sit and watch for a while. archer>malmo was also named the 17th best small company to work for by the Great Place to Work Institute, so we know they’re going to treat you right (and they have a video to prove it, but you’ll have to read on to get the link).

The other kids begged their parents to take them to the zoo. Animals were exciting to them. Animals move and eat. They make weird sounds. They smell funny. Plants have none of those appeal factors. Plants don’t move, they grow. They absorb their nutrients. They’re soundless. And they smell good (most of them anyways). To most kids that spells B-O-R-I-N-G, but not to you. You realize that the zoo is an 86-minute comedy movie, while a botanical garden is 142 minutes of Academy Award winning cinematic genius. So, if you were the kid that ignored the cheap thrills of the zoo for the higher art of the botanical garden, then today’s internships will bud your interest.

This one’s for those of you who took some time to pause and take in the eclipse on Wednesday night. Before we tell you about the Maria Mitchell Association, we must first introduce you to Maria Mitchell.
One crisp, clear night in October of 1847, a woman stood alone on a rooftop with a telescope at her side. While family and friends gathered in the light of the rooms below, Maria Mitchell gazed up into the stars. That night, Mitchell discovered a telescopic comet, invisible to the naked eye. This event propelled her to fame and changed the face of science and education throughout the world.
Maria Mitchell discovered a comet. Maria Mitchell was the first professional woman astronomer in the United States. Maria Mitchell has a crater on the moon named for her. Maria Mitchell was the first woman member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Maria Mitchell doesn’t sleep, she waits – oh, no, that’s Chuck Norris. Sorry, you get the picture. If you want more Maria Mitchell Facts, you can take a look at the Maria Mitchell Wikipedia entry. You can also read this book about her from Google books.

There’s no background story necessary on this one. You know MTV. You know what they’re all about; however, you may not know that MTV Networks consists of many properties, including MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, CMT, Comedy Central, Spike, and a few more. To be honest, we don’t have time to tell you about MTV Networks as a company because there are simply too many internship opportunities to go over.
You can find most of MTV Networks’ internship openings on Viacom’s Job Hunt site. These include:
Nickelodeon Animation Studio Internship Program (Burbank, California) – This is for undergrads at all class levels, must be for credit (so is probably unpaid), and runs year round. Internships are available in Production/Post Production, Casting, Development, Administration/Special Events, Human Resources, and Business and Legal Affairs.

Over on One Day, One Job, we recently mentioned that Facebook now has a valuation on par with that of the Ford Motor Company. In our post about Facebook, we noted how amazing it is that so much wealth can be created seemingly out of thin air; however, we didn’t mention the contrasting point that American auto manufacturers have had a similarly amazing ability to hemorrhage money. It’s sad to say, but the reason for the decline of the Big Three has a lot to do with foreign auto companies like Honda making better cars, and often doing it with American talent!

Do you think you’re cool? Why not try for an internship that will put your coolness to the test? PSFK is a consultancy and publishing company that specializes in “trends & inspiration.” Their story is inspiring to web entrepreneurs like us:
PSFK all began when two old friends, Piers and Simon (Fawkes and King) stopped emailing each other pieces of trend and idea news between New York to London – and instead started adding their observations on to a website called PSFK.com.
Somehow that site turned into a thriving business (we’re taking notes), and now they want to hire interns.

We first came across Current when we were researching entry-level jobs for One Day, One Job. Our first impression was that we didn’t get it. To clarify – not only did our cable provider not offer the Current tv channel, but we also didn’t understand what Current was all about. Our cable only goes up to channel 95, so we haven’t been able to tune in, but this article about Current on ReadWriteWeb helped us better understand Current’s market positioning and reason for existence. Current wants to be the place where the Internet meets television. It’s a good idea. Just look at Google Trends, and you can see how much television programming drives searches on the Internet. Current has 24/7 programming that relies on user-generated content from the net, which is definitely a new idea. Their web site is tightly integrated with their on air content, and viewers play a huge role in driving what gets broadcast.

Thanks for joining us for our first post on One Day, One Internship. If you’re a One Day, One Job reader, you know the drill. If you’re not, we’ll explain. Every day we feature one company and their internship opportunities. We do basic background research to give you new ideas on companies that might be fun, interesting, or exciting to work for as an intern. Our daily posts should be a jumping off point for you to continue your research and to get you in the right mindset for thinking creatively about what you want to get out of your Summer (or whenever you decide to do it) internship experience.
Whether you’re looking to add an extra commitment because of a lighter than expected course load, or trying to get your parents off your back about what you’re doing this Summer, Bliss offers two great internship opportunities that will provide a flexible schedule, excellent learning opportunities, and a really fun work environment. Why do we think they’ll have a fun work environment? Because “countless hours of spa-side tension-nixing and skin-fixing are the basis of Bliss.” Beyond that, they have amazing copywriting. Whether it’s their product descriptions or their job postings, Bliss uses its way with words to woo you. We think that kind of attention to detail has to spill over into the workplace.
