There are a lot of ways to get Fall internships. You can apply blindly. You can try your hand at networking. You can find great internships here. You can even bid on internships in auctions. Yes, that’s right, parents are now buying their kids internships at auction. Today we will be talking about auctions and internships, but Christie’s is not auctioning off their internships. They must maintain their aura of international glamour, and to besmirch their name by selling internships to the highest bidder would not be wise. Founded in 1766, Christie’s is now the “world’s leading art business with global auction sales in 2007 that totaled $6.3 billion.”

Since we’re much more interested in Silicon Valley startups than Britney Spears, when we do follow the gossip, it’s usually on sites like Valleywag. I just found out that my car is on its last legs. It’s a ’97 Ford Explorer, and I’ve loved it since I bought it as a senior in high school in 2001. These days American car manufacturers have a pretty weak reputation with consumers, but I was a happy customer. Unfortunately the decline in reputation has been part of the demise of the Big Three, and it’s seriously hurt the entire Michigan economy. That’s why you see these commercials with Jeff Daniels that try to sell businesses on a Michigan location. Armstrong White is exactly the type of company that is going to bring jobs back to Michigan. They have built a business in Bloomfield Hills, MI that directly serves the auto industry, but is also high tech and extremely innovative. No, they haven’t developed some sort of alternative energy technology. They specialize “in rendering reality out of automotive 2D and 3D assets and digital landscapes for print, broadcast and interactive mediums.”

When I was 6 years old, my Mom and Dad thought it would be a great idea to take the train to Florida. We had been to Florida quite a few times before to visit Grandma and Grandpa, but always flew from a New York airport. For some reason my parents decided that the train was the way to go this time. Instead of 6 hours door to door, it was a solid 2 days, but it was actually a lot of fun. The most memorable part was coming into Washington, DC at night and seeing all of the monuments lit up. It was also on that trip that I finally got the hang of reading. I haven’t taken a long train trip since, but I will be doing so this Summer on my way to Quebec for a fishing trip. Although a train is slower, it’s also more comfortable, less of a hassle, and a nice change of pace. That’s exactly what the National Association of Railroad Passengers thinks too, as they’re a non-profit organization that is pushing for “a modern, customer-focused national passenger train network that provides a travel choice Americans want.”

Yesterday we came across an article that included pictures of one of Earth’s last uncontacted tribes. It’s absolutely incredible to think that there are people out there who have absolutely no idea about what exists in the world outside of their society (you can be sure they don’t need to get internships). Even cooler is the fact that the rest of the world has almost no clue about them. The pictures were taken from an aircraft, which must have left these people totally freaked out. Their reaction was what anyone would do given the circumstances, they started shooting arrows at the plane. The article mentioned a non-profit organization called Survival International which protects these people from the encroachment. We immediately thought internships.

Elevators are by definition awkward. We’re not talking about the design, which is actually one of the more elegant inventions in human history, but about the social aspects of being in an elevator. When you step in, you are forced to invade other people’s personal space. You don’t know whether to make small talk or to look forward and do nothing. If you’re in the back and need to get out, but there are people in front of you, it can be a struggle to not miss your floor. It’s generally an uncomfortable experience to step into an elevator (what if it fell? ahhhh), but millions of people have to do it every day to get where they live or work. Captivate Network hasn’t completely eliminated the awkwardness of elevator travel, but they have a product that makes the experience less awkward and delivers marketing messages to millions of people every day.

When we heard the name Lime Energy, our first thought was of a lime battery (close relative of the more common lemon battery). Since they’re a company that is all about energy efficiency, they’re probably not proponents of running a building entirely off of lime power. Happy Memorial Day! First and foremost, this is a day to remember those who have given their lives to protect our freedom. Help us send a big thank you out to all of those who have ever served in the armed forces, while we remember those who are no longer with us. We considered writing about careers in the military today, but it seemed a bit out of our realm. If that’s something that interests you, then you should take a look at Today’s Military to get a better sense of the options that are out there. Instead, we’re going to stick with a Memorial Day tradition that we’re much better acquainted with – the barbecue. I grew up in suburban Connecticut, but I spent a lot time outdoors, both around my house and in more wild places. During my childhood I rarely saw deer, turkeys, coyotes, or hawks. Only a few times did I ever hear or see a woodpecker. Seeing wildlife was special. As I got older that began to change. I see all of the above relatively often now, and I swear that I hear a woodpecker banging away every day now. I definitely consider this a victory for local conservationists who have worked hard to save and bring back wildlife habitats; however, I also know that many species of flora and fauna are still in danger across the world. Conservation International is an organization whose mission statement should be “saving life on Earth.” Instead they have chosen the slightly less terse:
We believe that the Earth’s natural heritage must be maintained if future generations are to thrive spiritually, culturally, and economically. Our mission is to conserve the Earth’s living heritage – our global biodiversity – and to demonstrate that human societies are able to live harmoniously with nature.
Either way, they’re doing great work towards helping the world balance the needs of society with nature.

We’ve always taken this literally by featuring companies that look like great places to work (we can’t ever be 100% on this, but we do our best). Well, a big part of finding a great internship is avoiding the not so great (or really awful) internships that are out there, so, today, we are going to look at a company called The Landers Group, which has been identified as a scam by people online and in the media. As it gets later in the internship hunting season, many college students become desperate. It makes them easy prey for employment scams like those peddled by The Landers Group.

If you’ve been keeping up to date with our daily internship posts, you know that we’re starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel. We’re not saying that the Summer opportunities that are available in late (yes, the 22nd is late) May are necessarily of lower quality, but it’s like a Black Friday Sale – the good stuff usually goes fast (and the best internship programs usually do their hiring months in advance). Well we were shocked to come across a company called Russell Investments that is one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2008 and is still hiring Summer interns. We actually found out about these internships from the Twitter profile of Amod Damle Russell’s Manager of College Recruiting.

As we continue to help you in your hunt for last minute internships, you need to remember that our daily posts are just jumping off points for your internship hunt. Just because the company that we feature isn’t near where you live or isn’t in the industry that you want to work in doesn’t mean that you should pass over it. Think about similar companies or fields and use the ideas that you come up with to formulate your own internship search plan. For instance, we are looking at internships at Wild Waves Theme Park in Federal Way, WA today. There may not be a ton of you out there who live near Wild Waves, but there’s a good chance that many of you live a commutable distance from a theme park. Use the job search techniques that we’ve taught you and see if you can find an internship at your local theme park.
Wet and Wild Internships
Whether you’re looking for summer jobs or internships, theme parks are a great place to look because they’re always hiring college students. Theme parks are generally large operations, so there’s more to working for them than taking tickets, selling hot dogs, or dressing up as a character in a costume that is 140 degrees on the inside. Wild Waves Theme Park is looking for interns in Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Operations, Food Service, Information Technology, and Retail. The only specific information that we could find about individual internships were job postings for their IT Internship, Marketing Internship, and Finance Internship. From those postings you can apply directly for the internships. We’re not quite sure if the other internships are still available, as they’re not listed in Wild Waves’ job openings, so your best bet is to fill out a general application and to state your desired internship. You could also try calling 253-661-8027, which appears to be the phone number for their HR office.

One year, my cousin gave me a subscription to MAD Magazine for my birthday. I had never read an issue before, but I definitely recognized their icon Alfred E. Neuman. I didn’t think that I’d get that into it, but every month I’d look forward to getting the latest issue in the mail. Most of the jokes probably went over my head, because I was about 12 years old at the time, but I’d sit there and read and laugh. The only way you’re going to understand what MAD is all about is to pick up an issue, so head out to your nearest magazine rack and get one if you’d like to put your sense of humor to work this summer.

This isn’t the first time we’ve featured internships at a botanical garden, but we thought it was time to reach out to those plant science and botany majors again. It must have crossed our mind when we realized that spring is in full force at One Day, One Job Headquarters. Everything has bloomed, and not only is it beautiful here, but it also smells great. Whenever we open a door or window we get a fragrant burst of springtime. It is no wonder that I decided to play volleyball in college. After all, my parents met on the volleyball court, and my first toy was not a doll or a teddy bear, but it was a mini Molton volleyball too big to even fit in my hands. Upon graduation in a couple of weeks, I will officially be retired from college athletics. As I enter the working world in the fall, for the first time in my life, I will be forced to fit volleyball into my schedule, rather than fitting my schedule around volleyball. Unfortunately, in consulting “on the beach” means working out of the home office, where volleyball is not an approved activity. Had I known that volleyball could have been my work and my play, like it is for the AVP‘s interns, I may have decided on a different career path. It’s too bad One Day, One Internship wasn’t around during my internship search.

Even if you’re a bit desperate for an internship, you should try to find something that will actually be worth your while. Don’t just get an internship for the sake of getting an internship. If you’re interested in media, make sure that your internship has something to do with the Internet. A company like CNET Networks is perfect, because they have a proven track record, but they’re still a new media company.

As it gets later and later in the internship hunting season, you need to change the focus of your internship search to more local possibilities. There are still opportunities to get an internship half way across the country, fly in for interview, land the job, and spend the summer in a new city, but they’re dwindling quickly. That type of hiring process just doesn’t work well in May for Summer internships. As disappointing as it may seem, you might have to spend the summer living with Mom and Dad. What kind of local options do you have? It depends where you live. One option that is available in many locales is interning for a local tv station. Most areas have some form of local station, and these stations can always use interns. It’s not as glamorous as interning for a major network, but the experience can be much more hands on. One example of a local television station that is still hiring Summer interns is Your TV20 in San Francisco.

Things like restaurants, hotels (for your parents when they visit), nightlife, movies, music, golf, shopping and other entertainment resources can be difficult to figure out. There are a lot of reviews online, but the quality of such reviews is often questionable. You never know who is writing them and what their personal tastes are. That’s why resources like Zagat are so essential to making the most of your stay in a new place. They have over 250,000 surveyors helping them produce the highest quality content for print and the web. A Zagat review is a review that you can trust. If you already have an internship, why not grab a Zagat guide for the city that you’ll be living in? If you don’t have an internship, why not consider interning with Zagat?
