Yesterday I heard that Y Combinator is funding its first non-profit. It’s pretty cool to see a for-profit incubator dipping its toes into the non-profit world, but there have been non-profit incubators around for a long time. One of them is Earth Island Institute. They’re a Berkeley, CA based organization that acts as a “hub for grassroots campaigns dedicated to conserving, preserving, and restoring the ecosystems on which our civilization depends.” So far they have incubated over 100 startup environmental projects and helped them get off the ground by providing administrative and financial resources that are essential for early stage non-profits.

I didn’t have a teacher accept an e-mailed assignment from me until my Senior year in high school. When I went to college all of my classes were supposed to be on Blackboard, but most of the professors didn’t use it because it was a terrible piece of software. Even by the time I graduated, most of my professors weren’t using much technology beyond e-mail to communicate and interact with students. I hear that’s changing, and I’ll bet that a lot of it has to do with how far technology has come over the last decade. We’ve all seen teachers try to get a video to play in class. When classroom technology doesn’t work, it brings learning to a screeching halt. Schoology is a New York, NY based company that does the opposite–they provide teachers with “the tools and connections to engage students more efficiently and improve educational effectiveness on both a large and small scale.”

I’m often asked how I’m able to consistently find interesting companies to cover. It’s all about what I call the always looking approach. If you open your eyes, you start to realize that your life is full of cues that can lead you to interesting employers. One of my favorite exercises is to walk around downtown Chicago and look at all of the billboards and signs. There’s always something new and interesting. But what about the company that makes the the signs? That’s Watchfire. They’re a Danville, IL based company that got its start as ” Time-O-Matic, an industry leader in innovations like the Time and Temperature signs that became landmarks at banks and downtown corner stores across the nation.” Now they’re in the business of LED signs of all shapes and sizes. A lot of people think that they’re not affected by outdoor advertising. I can almost guarantee that’s not true. One of Watchfire’s big products is the Price Watcher sign for gas stations. You can’t tell me that you don’t pick a gas station based on the prices shown on those signs!

When Apple came out with their new Maps app for the iPhone, a lot of people said that it was a terrible app. The app is actually pretty good–the problem is with the data behind the app. When One Day One Job was just a collection of my daily posts, it was pretty useful. But when I added in Indeed.com data to bring up to date job listings to every post, our archives and job search engine instantly became far more helpful. Good data (or content) is the key to good apps and websites. That’s where Factual comes in. They’re a Los Angeles, CA based company that “provides access to definitive global data for powering web and mobile apps, mobile advertising, and enterprise solutions.”

We’re nearly 2,000 employers in, and we’ve already helped a lot of people land amazing jobs and internships. But in the grand scheme of exploration, finding cool companies to work for just isn’t that impressive. There’s no danger, and there’s almost no chance of finding something truly new. Real explorers are in The Explorers Club, a New York, NY based “international multidisciplinary professional society dedicated to the advancement of field research and the ideal that it is vital to preserve the instinct to explore.” It’s a non-profit that was founded in 1904 and exists to promote “the scientific exploration of land, sea, air, and space by supporting research and education in the physical, natural and biological sciences.”

The United States’ foreign policy these days seems to have a pretty heavy focus on countries that are about as far away as geographically possible. Our relationships with China, India, and much of the Middle East tend to get more attention (especially in the press) than our relationships with our closest neighbors. Technology has made the world a much smaller place, but it’s still important to keep an eye on our own backyard. That’s what Inter-American Dialogue does. They’re a Washington, DC based non-profit that is “the leading U.S. center for policy analysis, exchange, and communication on issues in Western Hemisphere affairs.”

Before I discovered Bonobos, I used to actually buy clothes in retail stores. I guess you could say my style was preppy (and probably still is) considering the fact that I haven’t owned a pair of jeans since 7th grade. Back when I was still buying clothes in stores, J. Crew was the definition of preppy (barring Brooks Brothers of course), so that’s where I shopped. They seem to be making their image more “hipster” these days, but I’ll guess that’s based more on a change in fashion than a change in their target demographics. Anyway, J. Crew is a New York, NY based company that started with a catalog in 1983 and opened their first store in 1989. They’ve grown into an amazingly recognizable brand, and recently they’ve started growing another brand called Madewell.

In a place like New York City, it’s nearly impossible to build something without tearing something else down. That means that a lot of still useful stuff is sent off to the dump while new construction material is shipped in from afar. This is not only wasteful, but it’s also terrible for the environment. Build It Green! NYC is a New York, NY based non-profit that is “working towards reducing the amount of unnecessary construction and demolition (C&D) waste clogging our landfills.” They do this through two stores that make Build It Green! NYC “New York City’s only non-profit retail outlet for salvaged and surplus building materials.”

I’ve mentioned before that I was on the board of a startup non-profit. We were petty clueless and needed all the help that we could get–especially when it came to fundraising. The organization eventually folded, but maybe it wouldn’t have if we had known about the Foundation Center. It’s a New York, NY based non-profit that “connects people who want to change the world to the resources they need to succeed through data, analysis, and training.” While the Internet has changed the way that the Foundation Center works, they’ve been around since 1956, so they have a long history of helping other philanthropic organizations achieve their goals.

Yesterday in our post about A+E Networks I told you about all of my favorite reality tv shows. A lot of them are pretty embarrassing, but I have no qualms about telling people I watch Top Chef. It’s a great show (sidenote: I swear I saw Beverly Kim from last season at Whole Foods yesterday). This week was the start of a two episode “Restaurant Wars.” The rules change from season to season, but typically the cheftestants have to come up with a restaurant concept and build it from scratch in just a few days. Everything gets supplied by sponsors, but if that wasn’t the case they might want to check out The WEBstaurant Store. They’re a Lancaster, PA based company that offers an “innovative, easy-to-use website to meet the purchasing needs of food service professionals throughout the United States and Canada.”

I’m a sucker for reality tv. I hope this won’t make you think less of me, but my current favorites include Gold Rush, Bering Sea Gold, Pawn Stars, Hardcore Pawn, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Top Chef, Million Dollar Listing, and Storage Wars. I know I’m not alone because more and more of these shows are being put on the air. We’ve seen reality tv completely change the type of programming that a number of channels run. Bravo, A&E, and The History Channel are prime examples. The latter two are both part of A+E Networks, which is a New York, NY based “global media company with joint ventures and channels all over the world.” Their brands include A&E, Lifetime, HISTORY, LMN, BIO, H2, HISTORY en Español, Crime & Investigation Network, Military HISTORY, Lifetime Real Women, A&E IndieFilms, A+E Networks International, A+E Networks Digital, and A+E Networks Consumer Products. Most of the companies that we feature have business models that are pretty easy to grasp within a few minutes. Unless they’re a startup with a lot of funding and no business model yet, it’s pretty easy to figure out how they make money. That’s not really the case with proprietary trading firms, though they certainly make money. We’ve featured a few in the past including Jump Trading, Wolverine Trading, and Belvedere Trading. Today we’re going to add another to the list, Chopper Trading, which is a Chicago, IL “technology-based proprietary trading firm that operates in a range of global markets and trades on several major exchanges.” That’s about all they’ll tell you. Proprietary trading firms are in constant competition with each other for talent, technology, and profits, so they keep the details of their businesses secret. (They did spill one secret though–Chopper Trading is named after the CEO’s dog.)

A few months ago my cleaning lady brought a printed out picture with her to work. It was a pair of headphones that her grandchild in Poland wanted for Christmas. She explained to me in broken English that the headphones were very expensive in Poland and much cheaper here. She wanted to know where to buy them. When I told her that I could order them on Amazon for what would amount to nearly four house cleanings for her, she decided that her grandchild would have to appreciate a less expensive gift. In case it isn’t obvious, the headphones on the print out were from Beats by Dr. Dre, a Santa Monica, CA based company that “provides a premium sound experience at every touch point of the consumer’s life.” In only six years Dr. Dre has built an iconic brand (one that Polish kids tell their grandmothers in America about) in a market where most people used to use whatever came free with their CD or MP3 players. (I’m still perfectly happy with my Apple earbuds.)

I got back from vacation last night. Though I already miss the beach and the high 80s temperature, it’s good to be home. For me the best part is sleeping in my own bed and getting back to work in my favorite chair, but “the formula for a happy home is different for everyone.” At least that’s what Serena & Lily says. They’re a Sausalito, CA based company that sells “signature bedding, furniture, and décor for nursery and home” through a catalog, website, and retail stores. They describe their style as “about honoring your sense of adventure and finding the spirit of California wherever you call home.”

When you’re in school, you get a distorted view of what principals do. You see them deal with troublesome students and institute new rules, so you kind of assume that discipline is their main role. As you get older you realize that the job goes much deeper. They’re the CEOs for their schools. They have to manager a team of teachers, work with school boards, communicate with parents, and much more. A good school is often the product of good administrators, which is why a non-profit called New Leaders “develops transformational school leaders and designs effective leadership policies and practices for school systems across the country.” The organization is based in New York, NY and also has locations in 12 urban areas.

National Immigration Forum Logo

When you’re looking for a job, it’s hard to remember that it’s not a zero-sum game. Jobs aren’t a fixed resource, so your chance of getting a job actually increases as other people land jobs (though it’s not quite as true for internships). The mechanics behind this aren’t obvious, and that’s a big part of the reason that immigration has become such a divisive issue in our country (and lots of other ones too). The “they took our jobs” mentality satirized by South Park is unfortunately still petty common. The National Immigration Forum is working to change that. They’re a Washington, DC based non-profit organization founded in 1982 that “advocates for the value of immigrants and immigration to our nation.”

UNIQLO

I’ve always wanted to visit Japan. While the country is economically and technologically very similar to the U.S., it seems to be completely different culturally. I might get a chance to go there for my honeymoon (it’s one place that we’re considering), but until then I’ll have to enjoy Japan through its imports to the U.S. One of the latest is UNIQLO, a “brand has evolved from a chain of roadside stores to an international leader in style, quality, and fun.” I’ve never been inside one of their stores, but it seems that they’re about to start popping up all over the place (the first U.S. based store was in New York, NY, which is also where UNIQLO’s U.S. operations are based out of). From what I can tell, UNIQLO is targeting a similar market to American Apparel, though UNIQLO believes that their clothes set them “apart from apparel companies whose sole purpose is the pursuit of fashion trends.”

I’m on vacation in Aruba, so I’ve been going out to dinner every night. One thing that I’ve noticed at nearly ever restaurant is kids playing games on iPhones or even iPads while their parents essentially ignore them. iDevices are great educational tools, but so is a family dinner. I’m sure there are some reasons for exception, but I think most parents should probably have some sort of “no playing games at the dinner table” rule. Save the game playing for another time… like at school. That’s what eSpark is aiming for. They’re a Chicago, IL based startup that works with K-8 schools to offer “personalized learning on the iPad,” and they’re already delivering amazing results.

Happy New Year! I’m getting married this year, so getting in shape is more than just a New Year’s Resolution. I started working out with a personal trainer about a month and a half ago, and it has been awesome. I nearly threw up during the first few sessions, but I’m getting stronger and my trainer has helped me overcome a few nagging sports injuries. It’s expensive, but it’s well worth the investment. You can’t replace the in-gym experience with a personal trainer, but Wello is a company that is trying to come close through the power of the Internet. They’re based in Palo Alto, CA, and they offer personal trainers over “live, 2-way video.”

I’ve finally found the secret to alchemy–cheap New Year’s party favors. Any decent restaurant can offer the same food they offer the rest of year, add a glass of cheap champagne, a cardboard hat with a rubber band strap, a noisemaker, and maybe a plastic necklace, and then charge $200 for their “New Year’s Even Party.” It’s brilliant considering that you can buy New Year’s Party Kits for less than a dollar per person from Party America, an Alameda, CA based chain of retail party supply stores. They offer “everything you’ll need for your New Year’s bash through Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras, Chinese New Year, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Passover, Cinco de Mayo, Graduation, 4th of July, Labor Day Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah.” Party America’s Careers page offers info on both in-store and corporate positions. There’s no word on internships, but it’s still worth a try. I remember a lot of the commercials from my childhood better than the shows that they were aired on. That’s probably because the commercials were designed to ensure that I remember them, while the shows were more about entertaining me in the moment. I’ve been bombarded with commercial messages since I was born, and I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. I’ve learned a lot from commercials–how marketing works and how not to be a sucker for example. I’ve even learned about some great products. My opinion is probably not shared by the folks at Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood, a Boston, MA based non-profit that is working “to reclaim childhood from corporate marketers.”

While the Holiday Season is a time that many of us offer help to the less fortunate, it’s usually in the form of gifts or donations. This kind of help is great, but it’s typically temporary. Homelessness and poverty are both societal and individual problems, so bringing about real change is going to take a lot more than a few weeks of giving. Real Change is a Seattle, WA based non-profit that “exists to provide opportunity and a voice for low-income and homeless people while taking action for economic justice.” By focusing on helping the individuals while at the same time pushing for societal change, Real Change is able to make a meaningful difference.

A few weeks ago I was reminded of how annoying car ownership can be. I got a flat. Luckily I was parked on my street and they weren’t doing street cleaning that day. I called AAA to have them help put on my spare, but it ended up that the spare was rusted in place on the bottom of the car. Then I had to call a tow truck to take the car to a tire shop where I spent $500 on new tires. Overall it wasn’t too bad (I wasn’t stuck on the side of the road in a bad neighborhood or anything), but the experience reminded me that there’s a price for all of those times that having a car is super convenient. Getaround is a San Francisco, CA based company that changes the car ownership equation. They offer a platform for peer-to-peer car sharing that allows car owners to earn money by renting out their cars and the carless to enjoy the convenience of owning a car when they need it.
