Lately it seems like we’ve looking at companies with previously trendy business models. We did the subscription gift box (Glossybox), the flash sale site (Rue La La), and now we’re doing the daily e-mail (obviously my favorite model). What usually happens when a business model gets hot is that a ton of copycats come along and quickly oversaturate the market. Most of them eventually fail, and people see that as evidence that the original business model was unsustainable. It’s really just that most people who copy other business aren’t very good at running businesses. PureWow is a lot like DailyCandy or even Thrillist (they even have the same backers), but they’ve chosen a distinctly different market. The New York, NY based company realized that most women-focused online content was made for the under 30 crowd, so they decided to change that.

When I was a kid, making t-shirts was a big thing. We had fabric markers and some sort of glittery paint in a squeeze bottle. The end result was always a huge mess and a t-shirt that I would be embarrassed to wear. Then there was tie dye, which is even messier and more embarrassing to wear. My mom once had a photo t-shirt made for me, and that was awesome, but there was no way that I could do that on my own. Things have changed. Lumi is a Los Angeles, CA based company that has developed “a revolutionary photographic print process for textiles and natural materials.” It’s basically Instagram, but your photo ends up on a t-shirt or pretty much any other appropriate surface.

I first learned about the “subscription gift box” when I profiled Birchbox in mid-2011. Since then the subscription business model has gained a ton of momentum with companies like Beachmint and Quarterly offering different takes on a similar idea. Glossybox is pretty much the same take on the same idea. They’re a New York, NY based company that offers subscription boxes with “exclusive cosmetic samples and perfume samples from the best makeup brands online.” The company is a Rocket Internet venture, which means that the Samwers are behind it. They are brothers who have a reputation for cloning American startups and bringing them to International markets at an insane pace (just look at Rocket Internet’s portfolio companies to get an idea of the scale on which they operate). Glossybox has been around for just about 2 years, and they’ve already raised more than $70 million and shipped more than 2 million boxes.

I’ve only purchased one car in my life. I barely used the Internet (mostly because it wasn’t all that helpful for buying cars in 2001), and I got an ok deal. I know a lot has changed in terms of buying cars over the past decade (just look at what TrueCar is doing), but Edmunds has been along for the ride since well before the Internet was invented. The Santa Monica, CA based company was started in 1966 “for the purpose of publishing new and used automotive pricing guides to assist automobile buyers” and they’ve continued to become “one of the most beloved and well-known automotive resources of the 21st century.” If you’re looking to do some research before buying a car, Edmunds is the place to go.

Last year I was lucky enough to spend a day in Yellowstone National Park. It was a short trip, but I saw all kinds of wildlife including elk, bison, and a fox. One thing that becomes obvious almost instantly once you’re in the park is that there are a lot of people coming into close contact with wild animals. This is kind of the point, but it can have bad consequences for the wildlife. Many animals can become injured or orphaned, and that’s when the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary steps in. They’re a Red Lodge, MT based non-profit that is “the only public refuge in Montana to house native animals that cannot be returned to the wild due to injury or habituation to humans.”

I grew up in a coastal New England town and spent my summers on the beaches of the Atlantic. Now I live in the Midwest, and even though we have beaches and coastal areas, it’s just not the same. I miss the smell of salt in the air, the seafood, and the opportunity to go fishing with the hope of catching a true sea monster. If I ever get back out there, I hope that there will be more to enjoy than just the salty air. I started elementary school terrified of “hot lunch” (apparently I’ve always had good instincts). One day my mom forgot to pack my lunch, and the principal had to buy me something from the cafeteria. Personal finance and the job search go hand in hand. That’s why I was intrigued to learn about a “financial wellness” tool that was designed with the help of behavioral economists. Their goal is to “boost the wealth of workers by democratizing access to honest financial guidance – something only 20 percent of Americans have access to today.”

I was way ahead on the flash sales and members only shopping thing. I did a writeup on Gilt Groupe almost five years ago just as the business model was catching on. While there isn’t nearly as much excitement about the space as there used to be, it’s still a great way to sell stuff (time constraints and sales both have amazing psychological effects on people). And that’s why I think it’s worth taking a look at Rue La La. They’re a Boston, MA and New York, NY based company that curates “Boutiques filled with the best of the best in women’s and men’s fashion, home, travel, kids, and more.” Each sale lasts 48 hours and is limited to members only (though becoming a member is about as easy as signing up).

While it seems to me that most of the debate about healthcare policy happens at the national level, states actually bear a lot of the responsibility on that front. It makes sense in that they’re closer to the people they’re serving, but it also means that there are a lot of separate organizations doing the same things just in different places. The National Academy for State Health Policy is a non-profit that helps “states achieve excellence in health policy and practice” by working with each other. The organization is based in Portland, ME and Washington, DC, and they provide a “forum for constructive work across branches and agencies of state government on critical health issues.” While most functions will be duplicated across states, they’ll each have a slightly different take on health policy. The National Academy for State Health Policy allows these organizations to learn from how other are approaching the same issues.

Marketing is all about attention. It used to be that marketers would try to interrupt you while you were paying attention to something else (like a tv show or baseball game), but that’s changing as most of us get better at ignoring distractions. Brands are realizing that if they want attention, they have to earn it, and that’s why they’re turning to social. And if they need help with that, they may want to turn to an appropriately named full-service media agency called Attention. I made it from seventh grade through college with a single TI-83, who wants to touch me? Maybe it’s because I went to a private school where people were careless with $80 devices (they’re about $95 on Amazon now), but I swear everybody I knew either lost, broke, or had theirs stolen at least twice. About 10 years ago I walked into a random McDonald’s in upstate New York and was shocked to see that the menus were on flat screen TVs. I’d never seen that before, and this was the last place I would have expected to see it (I’m pretty sure this was a test McDonald’s or something). Today digital displays are cheap and everywhere, as they provide an easy way to communicate messages that might change over time or require interactivity. At least it’s supposed to be easy, but technology often gets in the way of itself. This morning I was about to buy something but changed my mind because the checkout process was too annoying. While I probably shouldn’t be so lazy, that should never happen. E-commerce software is a solved problem. Why would a retailer invest in building their own proprietary site when they can license it from a provider like Demandware? They’re a Burlington, MA based company that offers an “enterprise-class cloud commerce platform” that powers “more than 150 retail brands across more than 575 sites around the globe.” If you regularly buy stuff online, you’ve almost certainly come into contact with Demandware’s platform. You probably had no idea, and that’s just how Demandware wants it.

Reading should be part of your career search, but it needs to be part of an active pursuit to learn new things and become more employable, not a passive way to make yourself think that you’re doing something productive. That’s not to say that everything you read should be a how-to guide, but you need to choose books, articles, and publications with a purpose. If you do that, you’ll probably run into a lot of stuff published by Wiley, a Hoboken, NJ based “global publishing company that specializes in academic publishing and markets its products to professionals and consumers, students and instructors in higher education, and researchers and practitioners in scientific, technical, medical, and scholarly fields.” They’re a billion dollar business, so they’re publishing a lot of books on a lot of topics.

For as long as charitable organizations have existed, they’ve been feeding people. Yesterday we looked at Food & Friends and how they’re feeding people who are suffering from cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other illnesses. Today we’re going to look at an organization that is more focused on the quality of food that we eat. Seattle Tilth aims “to inspire and educate people to safeguard our natural resources while building an equitable and sustainable local food system.” The organization is all about maximizing the health of the community through agriculture that respects the environment.

I love cooking for friends and family. There’s something extremely rewarding about feeding people and helping to fulfill one of their most basic needs. But there’s more to it than that. Sharing a meal creates a connection and brings people together. That’s why Food & Friends exists. I have a favorite Yankees blog, and I occasionally participate in a Cornell Hockey forum. I follow a few athletes on Twitter, and sometimes get into sports debates on Facebook. I’d imagine that I’m a pretty typical sports fan in terms of my social media and web use–my attention is fragmented across a lot of different sites. Most college kitchens are filled with decades old hand-me-down tools (at least mine was). They’re not the best, but they get the job done. That used to be the way that all kitchen tools were. OXO changed that in 1989 with the launch of their Good Grips brand. Their focus on design helped take kitchen tools from a commodity to a product where brand matters and grow from startup to acquisition. A lot of the credit for the success has to be attributed to Oxo’s working with Smart Design, “an award-winning design and innovation consulting firm with offices in New York, San Francisco and Barcelona.” Smart Design has been around since 1980, and in that time they’ve worked “with companies of all sizes and across diverse industries to create human-centered design solutions that delight customers and help companies achieve their business goals.”

I have a favorite shirt. It doesn’t quite fit anymore, and I’m sad about it. When I first bought it, it was just barely long enough. With each wash it seems to shrink a tiny bit, and now it’s at the point where any upward arm movement temporarily turns it into a belly shirt. Nobody needs to see that. The shirt is a purple (I’d call it pink) Cotton Reverse Seam Shirt by Steven Alan, and I bought it on Gilt. The best thing about it is that people always tell me that I have my shirt inside out, and I get to exclaim, “Haven’t you ever heard of reverse seams?” It’s the small things in life. The Reverse Seam Shirt is Steven Alan’s signature, and it’s part of the reason why the New York, NY based designer and retailer has been able to grow “a loyal following for [its] unique brand of casual, smart, self-assured essentials for both men and women.”

Once or twice a year I’ll come across an opportunity that is so outstanding that I’d almost consider applying. When I saw a post on Facebook saying that the group behind Alinea, Next Restaurant, and The Aviary is looking for an intern, I dropped everything and checked out the posting (though I’m sure whatever I was doing on Facebook was obviously extremely important). I follow the Alinea and Next Restaurant accounts on Facebook because doing so gives you an inside edge on getting tickets. Yes, they sell tickets for a dining experience, and they usually sell out within hours. That tends to happen when one restaurant (Alinea) is the undisputed best restaurant in Chicago, IL and arguably the best restaurant in North America, and the other (Next Restaurant) offers one of the most exciting new concepts in fine dining. And then there’s the Aviary, a place that has transformed the cocktail into fine art.

Right now I’m in the process of getting some of my friends together to coordinate my bachelor party. I have less than zero interest in the traditional approach, so I’m looking for some good outdoor activities for a bunch of dudes. We haven’t decided where we’re going yet, but ideally we’ll rent a house instead of staying in a hotel. One of the best places to find vacation rentals is HomeAway. They’re an Austin, TX based company that offers “the world’s leading online marketplace of vacation rentals, with sites representing over 711,000 paid listings of vacation rental homes in 171 countries.” I figured that VRBO.com was their biggest/most similar competitor, but it turns out that they own them. I guess maybe the biggest competitor is Airbnb then, though they serve a slightly different market (more apartments fewer houses).

We live in a strange time. The stats tell us that investing in higher education is one of the best investments that an individual can make, yet so many young people are saddled by student loans and under or unemployment. Something is going to have to change, and I’m not sure what it will be. American Student Assistance is an organization that will likely play a role in the change. They’re a Boston, MA based “private nonprofit whose public purpose mission is to empower students and alumni to successfully manage and repay their college loan debt.” ASA was founded in 1956 as the Massachusetts Higher Education Assistance Corporation and has served as a loan guarantor for much of its history. That ended in 2008 with a change in Federal law, but it hasn’t stopped American Student Assistance from offering SALT, its “innovative financial literacy and default prevention program.”

Cancer is a scary word, and it’s at its scariest when we’re talking about kids. It would be nice if kids didn’t even have to know what cancer is, but every year in the U.S. about 10,000 kids under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer. About 1,500 will end up dying from the disease. Pablo Thrailkill Castelaz was one of the kids who didn’t make it. He died just days after his sixth birthday in 2009 after a “valiant yearlong battle with bilateral Wilms Tumor, a rare form of childhood cancer.” In his memory The Pablove Foundation was formed. It’s a Los Angeles, CA based non-profit that is “fighting childhood cancer with love.”

Yesterday we looked at a chain of sandwich shops that started from a modest single location. Today we’re going to look at “a neighborhood boutique” that opened in 1935 and has grown to more than 1,000 locations across 37 states. The company is Rainbow Shops, and oddly enough, I’ve never heard of them. That’s not a bad thing considering that females are their target market and I don’t spend a lot of time in shopping malls. The Brooklyn, NY based retailer offers an “assortment of clothing for juniors, plus sizes, and children, as well as an extensive shoe collection.”

The only one that I’ll somewhat regularly eat at is Potbelly Sandwich Shop. It’s hard to beat one of their Meatball sandwiches with an Oreo milkshake. I’d never heard of Potbelly until I moved to Chicago, IL, which is both where they’re headquartered and where they got their start. While I’m sure Macklemore’s Thrift Shop has made it more fashionable to buy secondhand clothing, the fact remains that most of us buy clothing that has been marked up every time it moves through the supply chain. For a designer shirt that can be up to eight times. We all know that clothes don’t have to be expensive, but we keep coming back to the designers and brands that we like.
