Maybe I’ve started too many posts like this, but I was doing my daily scan of Twitter for interesting internships when I came across a tweet from @bethcromwell about StrategyOne internships. I clicked the link and was surprised to end up on the website of Edelman. Apparently StrategyOne is a part of Edelman, so I decided to take a look at Edelman’s entire internship program. Edelman is a huge PR firm. They have 3,100 employees across 51 worldwide offices. They were voted PRWeek’s Large Agency of the Year for 2008 because of their position as a thought leader in new and social media. It’s cool to see the big guys as early adopters, so that’s why we think an internship with Edelman might be worth considering. It’d also be worth considering because Edelman is the PR Agency that was behind the launches of Halo 3 and Adobe CS3. Sweet!

Yesterday we wrote about The Cleveland Foundation’s Internships because they asked us to (and the internships looked great). Today we’re writing about internships at WTTW11, a local PBS station in Chicago, because one of their former interns e-mailed us to let us know that he highly recommended interning with them. We’ve looked at internships at PBS and we’ve also looked at internships with American Documentary before, so today’s internships should be similar to those. That’s because WTTW11 is a major local PBS affiliate that produces a number of its own shows. They have some major projects going on, and they need lots of interns to help out. They work on both local and national productions, and both are of impressive quality. This isn’t some tiny tv station – they’re producing shows that can be seen across all PBS stations (in the past they’ve produced classics like Lamb Chop’s Play Along and The Frugal Gourmet).

Happy Election Day! I’m not going to urge you to vote like most other people will, because yesterday I learned that “It’s more likely that you will be killed driving to the polling booth than it is that your vote will change the outcome.” That’d be a lot to have on my conscience, so I’m going to say vote at your own risk. If you’re upset that I’m making a mockery of the political system, then today’s company isn’t for you. That’s because we’re talking about The Onion and their internships. I can’t think of a more fitting company for election day (except for maybe Diebold, but they’re not nearly as much fun) than The Onion because politics and satire go hand in hand. Without politics satire is hamstrung, and without satire politics is utterly painful. The Onion is not only “America’s finest news source,” but also “the funniest publication in the US” according to the New Yorker.

If you’ve been paying attention over the past few weeks, you may have noticed that I recently moved to Chicago. I’m trying to make a list of things to do and places to see, and one of the attractions that I’m excited to visit is the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. It’s exactly what you’d expect a nature museum to be – they have butterflies, praying mantises, and water snakes. They have all kinds of exhibitions and special programs that include daily animal feedings. It looks like a wonderful day to visit, and it also looks like a fantastic place to have an internship. And in case you were wondering Peggy Notebaert is the wife of Richard Notebaert, the CEO of Qwest, who donated $5 million to the construction of the museum with the stipulation that it be named after her (we really had to dig to find that).

Yesterday I told you how my move to Chicago has extended my baseball watching season, but I’m not sure that I mentioned that I have tickets to today’s Cubs game! I’m pretty excited about it, although I’m not excited about the fact that it might get into the 40s tonight during the game. October baseball is not for fair weather fans – the types who might prefer a catered event at the stadium to a real baseball game. Whether you’re a fair weather fan, an insanely devoted fan who just wants to be as close to your team’s stadium as possible at all time, or even if you just enjoy fine dining, an internship with Levy Restaurants might be something worth thinking about. They’re a company that is all about hospitality and dining experience, and they happen to do catering/events at some pretty amazing venues – Wrigley and U.S. Cellular Field included.

I never thought that moving to Chicago would prolong the baseball season for me. Living in the New York City area gave me 13 straight years of October baseball, and now that I’ve left, both Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium will remain empty for the rest of the fall before they eventually face demolition. It’s lucky for me that I’m now living in a new city that happens to have two teams that are still in it. I get a 14th straight year of local baseball in October! Playoff baseball is by far the most exciting baseball of the year, but it also means that season will soon be over. Those of you who are baseball fans know how long the winter seems when there is only hot stove chatter to keep you entertained while you wait for pitchers and catchers to report to Spring Training. Although it may seem ridiculously early, now is the time to start thinking about your Summer plans if you want to intern with Major League Baseball. It’s pretty obvious that there is a lot of demand for these internships, so you need to make sure that you’re on the ball and beat all of the deadlines.

A lot of people and organizations think that they know what it takes to keep kids out of trouble. They’ll go on and on about how this or that is the way to keep kids from becoming criminals. Fight Crime: Invest in Kids is a non-profit organization that takes “a hard-nosed look at research on what keeps kids from becoming criminals and put that information in the hands of policy-makers and the public.” They base their action on facts, not feelings, so that they can do the most to make our streets safer and the lives of our youth more meaningful.

Periodically the news is riddled with stories about how the airlines are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Lately the focus of doom and gloom commentary has shifted to finance and insurance companies, but that doesn’t mean that the airlines are doing any better. There’s one company that is seemingly never in the conversation about struggling airlines – Southwest Airlines. If you’ve ever flown Southwest, you probably know why. They do things differently, and it makes flyers happy. Even though it seems like almost no one can succeed flying commercial routes, Southwest continues to impress. Air travel isn’t going anywhere – it’s too important to us, so forget about all the bad things that you hear about the airline industry, and start thinking about an internship at Southwest Airlines.

How do you make any sport better? Put the word “arena” in front of it! Arena Soccer, arena badminton, arena fishing, arena skydiving… you get the idea. Putting “arena” in front of a sport’s name is only second to putting “extreme” in front of it. Well one of the sports that actually works (not necessarily better) in an arena is football. The Arena Football League is exciting to watch and offers an option for the football junkies who are bored to tears in the offseason. Getting an internship in sports can be tough, and getting an internship with a team in a major sports league can be near impossible. Sometimes looking to the secondary leagues (sorry AFL) can offer great alternatives.

A couple days ago I spent most of the day with a realtor driving around downtown Chicago looking at apartments. I’ll be moving out here in a couple months, so I thought it was important to get familiar with the process, even though it’s too early to actually find a place that will let me move in on my desired date. The whole process is bewildering, and I’m glad that I have a girlfriend from Chicago to inform me about the ins and outs of each of the neighborhoods. I’m also lucky enough to have a budget that should put me in a pretty decent place. The decision of where to live is an important one, and it can be extremely difficult for anyone. It can be especially hard for people of low-income who often lack the information they need to pick the right location to look in. MoveSmart is “a start-up non-profit organization that fosters vibrant and diverse neighborhoods by empowering housing seekers to move to opportunity.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve featured internships at a botanical garden, but we thought it was time to reach out to those plant science and botany majors again. It must have crossed our mind when we realized that spring is in full force at One Day, One Job Headquarters. Everything has bloomed, and not only is it beautiful here, but it also smells great. Whenever we open a door or window we get a fragrant burst of springtime. Fellowship Programs are the new big thing for college graduates. There are quite a few highly competitive programs like Teach for America, New York City Teaching Fellows, and The New Teacher Project that focus on turning new college grads into teachers in low-income public schools. What about coaching? Athletics has become significantly linked to education in America, and it is also one of the few areas where low-income schools can be on par with their well funded counterparts. Sounds to us like there’s an opportunity to initiate change there. Coaches often seem more accessible to students than teachers are, so why not put the same types of young leaders that are being recruited as teachers in coaching positions at high needs schools and see what happens? That’s what Philip Kovoor wants to do with National Coaching Fellows, the non-profit organization that he recently started.

We’re seriously covering daytime tv this week. Yesterday we talked about soap opera internships, and today we’re talking about Oprah. We just want you to realize the sad reality that if you don’t get motivated and start working to find an internship today, you might spend the summer on the couch instead of in the office. As character building as sitting on the couch is, it’s not the type of work experience that is going to look good on your resume when you need to apply for jobs after graduation. You can’t even call it “traveling.” So instead of making an impression in the seat cushions of your couch, you should be making an impression in a real work environment. Harpo is Oprah Winfrey’s media company, and they’re still looking for Summer interns.

About two months ago over at One Day, One Job, we wrote an article about finding jobs by watching tv. You shouldn’t be surprised that we practice what we preach and use the tube for internship searching as well. We’re big fans of Top Chef and watch its new episodes every week. We like it because we learn new cooking techniques, but also because it’s a reality show that rewards people for being talented, not for being jerks. Though we sometimes completely zone out in front of the tv, we do our best to pay attention and keep an eye out for internship ideas. The most recent episode of Top Chef featured Common Threads, a non-profit organization that educates children on the importance of nutrition and physical well-being and fosters an appreciation of cultural diversity through cooking. We made a mental note on Wednesday night, and here we are on Saturday morning writing about them.
