Most of you will end up in jobs where what you wear to work is based on looking appropriate. Comfort and style may also be considerations, but in most jobs it’s about looking like you fit in. In most jobs what you wear to work probably won’t affect your performance or safety, but it will if you’re a firefighter, law enforcement officer, first responder, or military service member. Those are jobs where what you wear matters–really matters. Now that the election is over, we know where the country stands on choosing a leader. But it’s still not all that clear what the collective wants on individual issues. There’s no doubt that polls guide policy, and that’s why the 2012 NORC Election Survey is important. It “was designed to measure public opinion about important issues the country faces – economic recovery, health care costs, and extreme partisanship,” and it is based on data collected both before and after the election. I have no doubt that I benefitted from educational gaming. While Oregon Trail only taught me not to shoot too many buffalo in one place, Type to Learn taught me how to type and SimEarth taught me about evolution. The games were simple and so were the concepts that they taught because that’s what the technology allowed. Today technology is no longer the bottleneck–imagination is. Wowzers is a Chicago, IL based company with plenty of imagination. They offer a cloud-based adaptive learning platform in the form of a game. Children pick an avatar and advance through math-based challenges. Teachers and administrators are able to monitor students’ performance as they progress through the challenges.

I hear from a lot of you that you want a career that makes the world a better place, but I know that some of you just want to make money (even if you’re afraid to admit it). If one were to design a business to generate profits as efficiently as possible, it would probably look a lot like a proprietary trading firm. A prop firm is one that doesn’t have any outside investors, so it can focus entirely on generating profits for itself without the worry that investors might want to pull their money out. I don’t know if being a nerd has ever been cooler than it is now. As technology becomes more approachable, so do the people who make it. It’s even come to the point where kids who are anything but nerds are self-identifying as nerds by posting pictures of themselves wearing glasses on Instagram. They can call themselves whatever they want, but real nerds make stuff. That’s exactly what the nerds at The Nerdery do. I’m getting married in Chicago next year. It’s going to be a pretty big wedding, and Chicago is surprisingly short on non-hotel venues that can handle our numbers. With the help of our wedding planner we visited a bunch of venues and finally chose one that is going to be great. Then we had to do the same thing for the rehearsal dinner. The trouble is that it’s extremely hard to figure out which venues are possibilities. Had I know about Eventup, it would have been a lot easier to get an idea of what’s out there. They are a Santa Monica, CA based startup (with a sales office in Chicago, IL) that offers a “marketplace that connects people who are looking to find and book the perfect venue for their event with venue owners who are looking to rent out their space.” It’s surprising that there isn’t already an established player in this space, but Eventup seems ready to fill the void.

It’s a great time to be a sports fan. The pennant races have already heated up in baseball, and football is here. If there’s ever a time to go to a live, outdoor sporting event, it has to be now while the weather is still beautiful. I usually go to StubHub for tickets, but I’ve been tempted to use a new site called Vivid Seats. They’re a Chicago, IL based company that aims to “to reinvent the ticket purchasing experience.” Beyond sports, they also offer tickets for concerts, theater, and more. While I’ve generally been happy with the StubHub experience in that I can get the tickets that I want for a good price, but the user interface is terrible and the add-on fees seem exorbitant. I haven’t had the chance to try Vivid Seats, but from what it sounds like, the offer a superior ticket buying experience and a total cost that “is almost always the lowest on the web.”

I remember when people used to be shocked that I would buy stuff online. They thought I was crazy to put my credit card number into a web form, and I though they were crazy for not thinking twice before giving their credit cards to random people who worked at stores and restaurants. While buying stuff over the Internet is now commonplace, you’d be shocked to know how painful and expensive it still is for businesses to collect payments online. It seems silly to spend a lot of time and money to make sure that your customers can pay you, but it’s kind of essential. They solve many of the headaches, and they offer transparent pricing that makes it easy for merchants to estimate costs. The best indication that Braintree is offering a great solution for payment processing is their own growth–they ended up at #415 on this year’s Inc. 500 with 895% three-year growth and $9.9 million in revenue.

Google really nailed it with search advertising. When you know what people are looking for, it’s really easy to show them advertising that they’re likely to respond well to. The promise of social media is that consumers will be targeted with even more relevant ads based on whom they know and what they like. In practice that doesn’t seem to be working out so well. There are similar approaches with far less hype and far more ROI. Just look at Resonate. They are a Reston, VA based company that “has pioneered a new model for using ‘Big Data’ to develop a sophisticated understanding of consumer values, attitudes and beliefs.” They came in at #235 on the Inc. 500 with 1,520% three-year growth to $9.8 million in revenue. They’ve done this by focusing on consumer’s values and belief systems–things like “patriotism, environmentalism, taste for luxury, or interest in innovation.”

I don’t know why adults even bother asking kids what their favorite class is. They’re obviously going to either say recess or make something up because they know that they’re not supposed to say recess. As a kid I felt bad for liking recess more than the rest of the school day, but now I realize that recess is totally underrated. It’s a time for social interaction, safe risk taking (or are monkey bars banned now?), decision making, and more. It’s also a fantastic way to get kids to burn off energy so that they can be more focused in the classroom. Occasionally I come across a company that I’m shocked that I’ve never heard of before. You’d think that after writing about more than 1,700 companies, there wouldn’t be many surprises left. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Just look at Silver Chalice. It’s a Chicago, IL based company that “builds and operates a fast-growing portfolio of high-value digital media businesses in the fields of sports and entertainment.” The company’s Chairman happens to be Jerry Reinsdorf–yes, the same Jerry Reinsdorf who owns the Bulls and White Sox. I love sports. I love tech. I live in Chicago. I should have heard about them at some point, but it seems that Silver Chalice likes to keep a low profile. I can’t really figure out why they’d want to do that, but the last major press coverage that they got was in 2009 right before they publicly launched. Back then the company was described as “an outside company to supplement the team’s core operations” (in reference to the White Sox).

I’ve mentioned before that if you want to see me act like a hungry, tired five year old, just take me furniture shopping. I’ve only been banned from one furniture store, but that was nearly 20 years ago, and I’m sure the picture of me taped to the cash register no longer looks like me. Now I know why a lot of stores have treats available for kids (usually the sugar high hits by the time the family is gone). One store that I actually kind of like is Design Within Reach. The spaces are usually pretty small compared to other furniture stores, and they have really unique stuff. Design Within Reach is headquartered in Stamford, CT, but they have stores all across the country (and most of their internships are in stores). I always thought the “within reach” part of the name meant affordable, but stuff at Design Within Reach is pretty expensive (though they’re much lower than a lot of other places). Apparently “within reach” means “authentic modern design” that is “not found elsewhere” and is “in stock.” That last one is a big deal. There’s nothing more frustrating than plunking down a huge amount of money only to hear that your couch will arrive in 3-9 months.

If you look through our archives, you’ll occasionally come across a company that is radically different from when we covered them. If a business can’t rapidly adapt to a changing market, they’re probably going to end up dead (there are a few of those in our archives too). That’s why I’m fascinated by companies that are able to successfully reinvent themselves. Jellyvision is an awesome example. They started out creating children’s films as Learn Television, but they quickly became frustrated by the passivity of a one-way medium, so they moved into interactive software. They released a few titles before landing on a blockbuster called You Don’t Know Jack. You’ve probably played it or heard of it considering that it’s sold more than 4.5 million units. Jellyvision, which is based in Chicago, IL, is still in the games business (Jellyvision Games), but they also decided to share their ability in “employing interactivity to communicate complex subjects” through work as a marketing agency called Jellyvision Labs.

Yesterday I came across Inc. Magazine’s 30 Under 30 list of America’s Coolest Young Entrepreneurs. Apparently I wasn’t cool enough this year, but I’ll leave my hard feelings aside because this list is an amazing source for interesting companies with exciting internships. While the list certainly skews towards tech, my favorite from the list is as old school as you can get. It’s a fungus startup–mushrooms to be exact. Most people stick to store bought mushrooms because eating some mushroom that you found growing in your yard could be deadly (or psychedelic), but store bought mushrooms often leave something to be desired–especially when they get slimy. Back to the Roots is an Oakland, CA based company that allows you to enjoy the freshly picked mushroom experience with a product that you can buy in a supermarket.

My dad always tells people that he loves shopping malls because they are full of people who aren’t doing the things that he wants to do (namely fishing). My views aren’t quite so negative, but when I do visit a mall, my goal is to be in and out as quickly as possible. How many times have you received a punch card from a business to work your way towards some sort of free merchandise? How often have you actually held on to the card long enough to redeem it? The only time a punch card worked for me was when I was buying for a group and maxed out the whole thing at once. The obvious replacement for punchcards is a smartphone app, and Belly is a Chicago, IL based company that is making it easy for merchants to offer loyalty programs. The nice thing is that you only need one card/app for every merchant (as long as they use Belly). All you have to do is flash your card or a barcode from the app in front of the merchant’s Belly iPad and you’ll get credit for your visit.

Last night I got back from fishing and the kid in the room next to me at the lodge told me that he saw a wolf on the side of the road. I assumed he was full of it and that it was just a coyote, but I looked it up and there are wolves in the lower peninsula of Michigan. In case you haven’t noticed, content marketing is where it’s at. Whether you’re trying to reach new customers or increase engagement with current customers, your best bet is to offer them quality content that includes your messaging. Sounds easy. But creating content that people will actually consume isn’t easy. Most companies aren’t very good at it. Sometimes they hire advertising or marketing agencies to do that, but many of them aren’t very good at it either. I’m often frustrated by companies that use too many buzzwords. Social media companies can be some of the worst offenders–their business is about being ahead of the curve, so they want to sound like it. Just tell me what you do! That’s why I was refreshed when I ended up on the website for GasPedal, an Austin, TX based social media company that says what they do in big letters on their home page. They “teach businesses to be nicer to you.” They do this by running “fantastic communities,” hosting “thrilling events, and writing “about marketing ideas you can actually use.” There’s also a consulting and training part of the business that I’ll bet is pretty significant.

My life is about as paperless as it gets. I avoid having to use a printer at all costs. Yet, I still think I know something about the paper and printing industry. It’s not because my mom is a graphic designer who dragged me along to pick up printing jobs when I was a kid. It’s because I watch The Office, obviously. It’s easy to think of the developing world as having completely different problems from the ones we have in the U.S. But when you look more closely, you start to realize that the link between poverty and a lack of good education is consistent across the world–our inner cities and the developing world have similar problems that require similar solutions. buildOn is a non-profit organization based in Stamford, CT that aims to break “the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education” by “putting youth in service and building schools in developing countries.” Most non-profits either focus on education abroad or domestically, buildOn is unique in that they believe that they can better solve both problems by working on them at the same time.

Furniture shopping brings out the worst in me. I tend to revert back to my childhood when my sister and I would team up (by fighting of course) to make our parents miserable so that we could leave the furniture store sooner. Luckily, my fiancée loves going furniture shopping with me. She’s found that if she creates conditions for success (making sure that I’m in a good mood and have recently had a meal), I can actually act like a human being at places like Crate and Barrel. In case you’ve never been to a Crate and Barrel, it’s a giant furniture and housewares store that is essentially my worst nightmare. It all started with one store in downtown Chicago, but now Crate and Barrel is headquartered in Northbrook, IL and has more than 170 stores including CB2 and The Land of Nod locations.

When I was in 9th grade I had to take a Health class. One day our teacher had us write letters to our future selves. She told us that she’d send them to us when we graduated high school. I never saw that letter again. I guess I’ll never know how I’m stacking up against the expectations of my 14 year old self. While many lessons from health class seem trite at the time, they can have life-long beneficial effects. Unfortunately, many public schools can’t afford to offer health education. When I think of shopping malls, I instantly think of escalators, Auntie Anne’s pretzels, and overpriced gadget stores. Because I was never a teen/tween girl, my memories don’t include Claire’s. In case you’ve never heard of Claire’s, they are a retailer of “fashion trends, accessories and jewelry for young women.” They have more than 3,000 stores across the world and are in 95% of U.S. shopping malls.
