NASCAR

If you’re like Derek Zoolander and can’t turn left, then a career as a NASCAR driver probably isn’t in the cards for you; however, that doesn’t mean that you can’t work for the the country’s 2nd most popular sports league (based on television ratings). Some may debate whether NASCAR is a sport or not, but nobody can debate its popularity. It’s huge. I’ve never watched more than 5 minutes of a NASCAR race, so I’m not the guy to sell you on NASCAR, but I do know that it’s a hell of a business. The league made $3 billion in profit last year, and they apparently share some of it by paying their interns.

Veson Nautical

Veson Nautical Logo

Did you know that the invention of the portable clock was mainly driven by the need for ships to measure longitude? I bet that you didn’t. I did because I was forced to read a book called Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time during the summer before my Sophomore year of high school. For most of nautical history, one of the most challenging problems facing mariners was figuring out where they were at a given moment. Now companies like Veson Nautical provide software solutions that “allow users to manage and share information efficiently across Chartering, Operations, Trading, and Accounting departments—streamlining workflow, cutting costs, and optimizing profits.” If Christopher Columbus (whom we celebrated – or not – earlier this week) had software to optimize profits, he certainly never would have “discovered” America.

ATA Engineering

Before we start, two things. Fisrt, if you’re currently doing an unpaid internship in New York City and would like to be featured in a press story, e-mail me at willy@onedayonejob.com. Second, if you want to win an iPod Touch with almost no effort at all, enter our contest. Ok, let’s get started. If you’ve read our article from One Day, One Job on 9 Magazine Lists That Will Find You a Job (it works for internships too), you know that we’re always looking for new lists of great companies who might be hiring interns. We recently came across the Wall Street Journal’s Top Small Workplaces 2008, so of course we’re going to poach from it. The list is alphabetical, and we didn’t even have to go past A because ATA Engineering Inc. looks like an awesome place to work, they appear to have a strong internship/co-op program, and this is just one of many awards that they’ve won. They’re an employee-owned engineering consulting firm, and they specialize in the areas of Spacecraft, Launch Vehicles, Entertainment, Electronics, Airframes, and Software. ATA Engineering is all about teamwork, and their compensation plans and hiring processes reflect that.

Metaweb Technologies Logo

Data is everywhere. There’s too much of it. It’s never been so easy to collect data, but organizing it is another issue. Metaweb Technologies is a company that realizes how big this problem is, so they want to “build a better infrastructure for the Web” before things get out of hand. Their first product is called Freebase, which is “an open, shared database of the world’s knowledge.” Metaweb Technologies’ goal is audacious, but they think that they can achieve it; however, they can’t do it without really smart people. That’s why they’re looking for interns.

Garmin

Ok, it might be politically incorrect to celebrate Columbus Day, but it was just about the only holiday that I had off when I was in college. Maybe it just happened to be a convenient weekend for Fall Break, but I still can’t believe that I didn’t have class on Columbus Day, but did have class on Labor Day (when I went to a School of Industrial and Labor Relations). Anyway, Christopher Columbus wasn’t much of a navigator. He had no idea where he was going, and he tried to take the long way around the world. Still, his ineptitude was the reason that he “discovered” the Americas. Had Garmin been around in the 1490s, Columbus never would have ended up where he did. Then again, the existence of a company built on GPS technology would have changed a lot of things for famous explorers five centuries ago. (Much like the existence of iPods – like the one we’re giving away – would have changed the world for musicians back then.)

Hallmark

This morning I realized which company we should have featured to celebrate my birthday yesterday. Luckily, my birthday celebration is going to be a 2 week event that will culminate with our giving away an iPod Touch to one lucky reader who spreads the word about us to his or her friends. Although we announced the contest last night, we’re really kicking it off today, so I think that we should focus on my birthday again and talk about entry level jobs with Hallmark. Here’s how Hallmark describes itself:

Some companies make things. Good things, but, you know…things. Hallmark is another kind of company. We play a unique role in defining and expressing friendship and family and love – and we’ve done it for nearly 100 years.

I usually just shake a card to see if a check falls out – just kidding. I actually got a talking Hallmark card that couldn’t have been more perfect for me. My mom may have had to walk through the store opening every single card to find it, but she did. It has made me laugh over and over. You have to love Hallmark.

Local Motors

Local Motors Logo

You may have seen it on a bumper sticker or overheard it while shopping downtown – especially in a college town – “Go Local.” It’s a movement that should stir pride in anyone who shares the small-r republican ideals of Thomas Jefferson. Farmers’ markets are back in style, artisanal cheese shops are popping up all over the place, and local, grass-fed beef is appearing on more and more restaurant menus. The yeoman farmer is back! Not only are these people making great products available, but they’re also building successful businesses by serving the demand for local food. How can this business model based on going local be extended beyond farming? One startup, Local Motors, is trying to make people “go local” when they buy cars. Yes, cars.

Southwest Airlines

by on September 17, 2008

Southwest Airlines Logo

Periodically the news is riddled with stories about how the airlines are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Lately the focus of doom and gloom commentary has shifted to finance and insurance companies, but that doesn’t mean that the airlines are doing any better. There’s one company that is seemingly never in the conversation about struggling airlines – Southwest Airlines. If you’ve ever flown Southwest, you probably know why. They do things differently, and it makes flyers happy. Even though it seems like almost no one can succeed flying commercial routes, Southwest continues to impress. Air travel isn’t going anywhere – it’s too important to us, so forget about all the bad things that you hear about the airline industry, and start thinking about an internship at Southwest Airlines.

Meebo

by on September 4, 2008

Meebo Logo

Since you’re looking for an internship and not in one, you may not be familiar with corporate policies on instant messaging. That’s ok, since they tend to be all over the place. At some companies you are required to be available by IM, since it’s the main form of communication used in the work place. At other companies instant messaging is strictly forbidden and even blocked by the IT department. We’re not trying to get you fired from the internship that you don’t even have yet, but if you absolutely need 5 minutes of contact with the outside world while at work, Meebo offers an easy way to get around company filters so that you can log into your AIM, Yahoo, Gchat, MSN, icq, or Jabber accounts. In fact, IMing behind your boss’ back probably isn’t a good idea for any intern, so maybe you should just use Meebo at home for its simple web-based interface, ability to log in to multiple accounts, and ease of use. Then again, you could just intern at Meebo so that you’ll be encouraged to have Meebo open in your web browser all day long at work.

ShopWiki

by on August 20, 2008

ShopWiki Logo

Do you have an online shopping problem? If so, don’t read any farther. ShopWiki is a New York City based startup that aims to make online shopping easier. It’s a comparison shopping engine, but it’s supposed to be better because it combines the abilities of search engine type crawlers with user generated content to provide relevant products and reviews. A search for “fly rods” just returned typical listings that I’d expect on any comparison shopping site, but a look at their MP3 Players buying guide shows how valuable a shopping wiki can be. It gives a complete overview of all of the options that you have for buying an MP3 player (yes, there are options other than iPods). Considering that ShopWiki received $6.2 million in venture capital in 2006, there has to be some serious selling potential behind the idea of a shopping wiki.

Masten Space Systems Logo

“Just gas ’em up and go!” – not the slogan that you’d expect to hear from an aerospace company, but that’s exactly how easy Masten Space Systems would like space travel to be. Masten Space Systems is a startup that is working on “developing a line of Vertical Takeoff and Vertical Landing (VTVL) launch vehicles.” You may have heard of Masten before, as they are also know for offering to launch your junk into space for a reasonable fee. Masten Space Systems wants to create rocket vehicles that are reliable and reusable, and they need Fall interns to help them do this.

Tesla Motors

by on July 8, 2008

Tesla Motors Logo

To be honest, I’m not totally focused on writing this post right now. I’m trying to stick it to the airlines who have responded to high fuel prices with surcharges for checked baggage. I’m already on the hook for $15 each way for my first checked bag, but I’m trying like heck to avoid the $25 each way for a second checked bag. The issue is that I’m packing for a trip that includes a Cubs game, a wedding, two days of fly fishing, a couple work related meetings, and some quality time with my girlfriend and her family. Nobody has built luggage that can keep a suit wrinkle free and hold two 4-piece fly rods yet, so I’m left scrambling. A much better way to stick it to the man is to get an electric car. That way fuel prices will just be a worry in your rearview mirror. Tesla Motors is in the business of designing and producing electric cars, and they will hopefully one day make purchasing an electric car a real possibility.

Red wagon. Need I say more? I bet you are already picturing Dennis the Menace pulling his Radio Flyer wagon behind his little red bike. Or maybe you’re thinking about your village’s 4th of July parade where all the kids decorate their bikes and pull wagons behind them with their younger siblings in them (ok maybe that’s just my memory). Almost everyone has some childhood memory associated with Radio Flyer. What’s yours? If for some reason wagon rides and Radio Flyer weren’t part of your childhood, check out this video.

Lime Energy

by on May 28, 2008

Lime Energy Logo

When we heard the name Lime Energy, our first thought was of a lime battery (close relative of the more common lemon battery). Since they’re a company that is all about energy efficiency, they’re probably not proponents of running a building entirely off of lime power. Although that may sound like a green alternative, we’d imagine that it would be extremely inefficient. Here’s a consulting interview type question – how many limes would it take to power Lime Energy’s office building for a day?

Chicago Department of Innovation & Technology Logo

It’s getting late. Many internships have already started, and others are starting in the next few weeks. We’re doing our best to continue finding great internship opportunities for this summer, but it’s getting harder to find internships that are worth writing about (if you know any companies that are still hiring interns for this summer, please contact us). At this point the best bet is to go local, and one employer that often takes on summer interns is the local government. That’s why we’re looking at the Chicago Department of Innovation & Technology and its internship program today.

Your TV20

by on May 13, 2008

Your TV20 Logo

As it gets later and later in the internship hunting season, you need to change the focus of your internship search to more local possibilities. There are still opportunities to get an internship half way across the country, fly in for interview, land the job, and spend the summer in a new city, but they’re dwindling quickly. That type of hiring process just doesn’t work well in May for Summer internships. As disappointing as it may seem, you might have to spend the summer living with Mom and Dad. What kind of local options do you have? It depends where you live. One option that is available in many locales is interning for a local tv station. Most areas have some form of local station, and these stations can always use interns. It’s not as glamorous as interning for a major network, but the experience can be much more hands on. One example of a local television station that is still hiring Summer interns is Your TV20 in San Francisco.

Columbia Sportswear Logo

I’ve been through a lot with my Columbia jacket. I first bought it for a high school “team building” trip that included a hike up a mountain in November. I was on the hefty side back then, so the hike was quite a trying task. By the time I reached the summit, I was a bit overheated to say the least. The jacket came off, and I enjoyed the much easier hike on the way down not realizing that my brand new jacket was still at the top of the mountain. I thought my Mom was going to kill me, because going back up to get it was not an option. Luckily a guide from another group grabbed the jacket and brought it down for me. That was almost 10 years ago (which is really scary, by the way I feel old and I’m only 23). Since then I’ve used the jacket to slide down snowy hills on my stomach on the way back from class and sneak fish into the Cornell-Harvard hockey game. The jacket is still in great shape, and goes to show that Columbia Sportswear Company makes one hell of a product.

One Tough Mother

Besides the fact that I like Columbia for their great jackets, Performance Fishing Gear, and Reel Stories videos, I also like them for their Chairman of the Board, Gertrude Boyle. She is the star of many of Columbia’s television ads, where she is best known as “one tough mother.” Columbia is run by the family that started it, but they are now publicly traded, which means that the investor relations section of their website offers a plethora of material to research. It’s pretty amazing that the whole company was started by a couple who fled Germany for Portland, Oregon and bought a hat distributorship.

Will You Be One Tough Intern?

Although Columbia makes great sportswear, they don’t know how to put together a decent Careers site. Or maybe we should say that Taleo, their Applicant Tracking System provider, doesn’t know how to put together a decent Careers site. Either way, all Columbia has is a job search function and a list of benefits. The most frustrating thing is that their job search function only turns up one of their internships, when we’ve found 4 by digging a little deeper.

You knew there was a reason that you subscribed. It’s probably because we find the internships that you would never find. A search for “internships” on Columbia’s Careers site turns up one listing (while a search for “intern” turns up none). The easy to find internship is in Apparel Sourcing. The saving grace is that Columbia has an RSS feed for job search results, so if you search all jobs and then click the RSS feed, you can find a couple more internship listings. We found two internships (here and here) in Industrial Engineering at their Distribution Center. The last internship that we found is not listed on their website, but was posted yesterday on a closed job board that we have access to. It is in Promotions, and is perfect for someone with an interest in Marketing or Public Relations, as long as it’s still available (if you’d like more details about this internship, leave a comment with your real e-mail address in the e-mail box – nobody can see it but us). We also found a now defunct listing from 4 days ago about a Footwear Internship, but we couldn’t find any more details about it. All of Columbia’s internships are located in Portland, OR.

Despite Columbia’s lackluster career site and relatively boring descriptions on their internship postings, we still think they’re a pretty cool company. They’re worth a look, especially now that it’s May.

Sun Microsystems Logo

I’ll admit it; I’ve become a mild Twitter addict. I just keep finding internships to write about by scanning tweets and following the links that they contain. It’s getting late in the game, and harder and harder to find companies that are still looking for Summer interns, but using unorthodox methods can turn up some great results. Most recently, I found a link to a post by a Sun Microsystems employee who is looking for two interns. Her post led us to Sun’s main Careers site, which truly impressed us.

Burton

Burton Logo

“Many Burton employees will snag freshies first thing in the morning before coming in to work during the winter.” Being non “riders,” we’re don’t know a whole lot about snowboarding, but we can be pretty sure that interns at Burton’s Burlington, VT office probably won’t have this luxury. It’s not that Burton doesn’t care about their interns, it’s just that “freshies” are kind of hard to snag in the heat of the summer. That’s ok, though, because Vermont is beautiful in the Summer and offers plenty of other outdoor opportunities for when you’re not helping Burton at the world’s first snowboard factory.

Southface

Southface Logo

Judging by the name, you might think that Southface is a company that produces “barely there” fashions for destinations that one might visit on Spring Break. Since the North Face is all about warm clothes, that’d be a good guess. Too bad it would be a wrong guess. Southface isn’t a company (it’s a non-profit organization), and it doesn’t manufacture clothing. They do work to provide “responsible solutions for environmental living” through education, research, advocacy and technical assistance.

Real estate. Don’t let those two words scare you away. Just because the market is ugly right now doesn’t mean that you should stop considering a future career in realty. First of all, you’re at least a year from graduation – market conditions will likely change (although not necessarily for the better). Second, we’re really good at finding you great internships in struggling industries – like how we told you to look at non-profit internships in finance. Third, a bad market almost always yields new opportunities for innovative companies. Redfin is a company that we’ve found that is insulating itself by using technology and price competition to take advantage of a weak market, and they’re still hiring interns.

We’ll be the first to admit that we’ve been slacking off this week. It’s tough finding new companies that offer entry-level jobs and internships every day. Animal Replacement Technologies Logo

Last week we wrote about Sarasota, FL based Animal Replacement Technologies on One Day, One Job. There was no indication that they were hiring new grads, but we really liked their story, so we encouraged our readers to take a look and inquire about jobs if they were so inclined. Soon after we posted, Animal Replacement Technologies founder Dr. Christopher Sakezles left a comment inviting our readers to apply for summer internships in engineering with his company (and also asking potential applicants not to cold call, but to e-mail instead). It was exciting for us to have one of Inc. Magazine’s Entrepreneur of the Year Reader Favorites leave a comment on our website; moreover, we realized that it was a perfect opportunity for us to share the excitement with our internship searching readers. If you read One Day, One Job as well, we apologize for sometimes being redundant and talking about the same companies on both sites, but we want to make sure that the internships we talk about are some of the most interesting and most worthwhile out there.

New York Botanical Garden

New York Botanical Garden LogoThe other kids begged their parents to take them to the zoo. Animals were exciting to them. Animals move and eat. They make weird sounds. They smell funny. Plants have none of those appeal factors. Plants don’t move, they grow. They absorb their nutrients. They’re soundless. And they smell good (most of them anyways). To most kids that spells B-O-R-I-N-G, but not to you. You realize that the zoo is an 86-minute comedy movie, while a botanical garden is 142 minutes of Academy Award winning cinematic genius. So, if you were the kid that ignored the cheap thrills of the zoo for the higher art of the botanical garden, then today’s internships will bud your interest.

Honda R&D

Honda LogoOver on One Day, One Job, we recently mentioned that Facebook now has a valuation on par with that of the Ford Motor Company. In our post about Facebook, we noted how amazing it is that so much wealth can be created seemingly out of thin air; however, we didn’t mention the contrasting point that American auto manufacturers have had a similarly amazing ability to hemorrhage money. It’s sad to say, but the reason for the decline of the Big Three has a lot to do with foreign auto companies like Honda making better cars, and often doing it with American talent!
