We all know that childhood is one of the most important periods in our lives. It sets the stage for what we’ll do and how we’ll do as we become adults, and it’s a time where it’s extremely important to make sure that the basics are accounted for. That’s why Cradles to Crayons exists. They’re a Brighton, MA based non-profit that is focused on “providing to children ages 0 to 12 some of the most important basics of life—free of charge.” For Cradles to Crayons, the focus is on hard goods–things like clothes, school supplies, and toys.

We live in a time when anyone can design nearly any kind product and have it manufactured overseas or domestically for a reasonable cost. It’s doable, but it’s not easy. 3D printing is in the early stages of changing that. Right now the capabilities are relatively limited, but there is no better place to keep an eye on where 3D printing is going than Shapeways. They’re a New York, NY based company that has built “the world’s leading 3D Printing marketplace and community.” It’s a site where anyone with a design can almost instantly offer the product to anyone who wants to buy it.

I’ve never really understood the idea of the “Summer Blockbuster.” Why would you want to sit inside and watch a movie when it’s nice and hot outside? I guess sometimes it gets too hot, and sometimes it rains, but I’d rather be outside. If you disagree with me, then you’re probably a big fan of Culver City, CA’s Sony Pictures. They’re in the business of producing, marketing, and distributing entertainment, and you’re probably familiar with some of their recent an upcoming releases like: Julie and Julia, Angels & Demons, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. They’re also responsible for Seinfeld. Since I’m not much of a movie buff, I don’t know if anyone actually cares what production house puts out a movie, but I do know that Sony Pictures’ end products seem to pretty darn good—they even made my favorite movie (about the outdoors, obviously), A River Runs Through It.

When you don’t know how to do something (like find an internship), what do you do? You probably head straight to Google and look for an online resource to tell you how to do what you want to do. It didn’t used to be that easy. You’d either have to ask someone, or buy a book (if you could figure out which book to buy), or figure it out yourself. Answering “how to” questions wasn’t easy, but now it is because of websites like New York City’s Howcast. Whether you head straight to Howcast or you find their answer to your question through Google, you’ll be delighted to find what they call “the best how to videos on the web.” Howcast covers nearly every topic you can imagine – from How to Adopt a Child to How to Psyche Out the Competition and – more relevant for our purposes – from How to Deal with a Smelly Coworker to How to Dress for a Job Interview. Each topic has both a video and a Wiki with written instructions, and the content is either user submitted or Howcast produced (it’s generally very high quality content). Oh yeah, and Howcast was named one of Time’s 50 Best Websites of 2008. That’s pretty cool.

If you’ve been reading for more than about a week, you’ve probably noticed that we spend a lot of time using social media to find exciting internships for you. It’s still not the best way to find employment opportunities, but it’s certainly the most interesting and the most engaging. Just look at Revision3, the Internet TV station. They’re blogging (and their Interns are blogging, and their interns have their own blogs too), Twittering, YouTubing, Digging, Flickring (Interns on Flickr too), and Facebooking, of course. They’re probably doing a lot more too. Revision3 is an Internet startup, so they kind of have to embrace social media, but the vast amount of information that they provide about themselves is an amazing recruiting tool. If you have any interest in working at Revision3, you’ll find everything that you need to get you even more excited about sending them an internship application.
