I don’t hide the fact that I’m skeptical of social media marketing. I was an early adopter, and it never really paid off for me. Still, I see tons of major brands investing heavily in social. They’re not stupid, so whether they’re hedging or actually getting a good return, social media marketing is going to keep growing. Since it’s such a new field, it’s a great industry for young people to make a name for themselves. That’s exactly what Aseem Badshah has done. When he was 16 he started a site called ThinkEssay.com “where students could post their schoolwork – such as essays, term papers, class notes, lab reports, and presentations – to provide inspiration and resources for other students.” That’s how he got his social media street cred. After he graduated from the University of Washington in 2010 he started Uptown Treehouse, a Bellevue, WA based (but they appear to be growing a team in Los Angeles) “full service marketing agency that helps brands meet their goals by leveraging social media to connect with current and potential customers.”

This Gangnam Style craze is kind of ridiculous, right? I originally saw the video in July and found it pretty amusing, but didn’t think much more of it. A couple months later it has over a quarter billion views on YouTube. I’m not sure if the interest will carry over into other Korean entertainment acts, but if it does, DramaFever is extremely well positioned. They are a New York, NY based company that gives “you a better way to find and watch the best TV and movies from around the world.” Their original focus was on Korean dramas, but they are rapidly expanding their offerings of tv shows and movies from Taiwan, China, Singapore and the Philippines. Bollywood films and latin telenovelas will come next. What’s interesting about DramaFever is that they target their content toward English speaking audiences, so it’s not just about giving expats the content that they miss from home.

I usually try to eat a high protein, low carb breakfast. Eggs are the perfect answer, but I find eggs completely unpalatable. Instead I’ll usually cobble together a breakfast of bacon or sausage and some fruit, but that isn’t quite enough. Lately I’ve been having Greek yogurt, and I really like it. I haven’t tried Chobani, but they seem to have become the big name in yogurt these days. In fact, they came in at #117 on the Inc. 500 with some really impressive numbers. Their 2,662% three-year growth rate is far more impressive than higher growth rates because the Norwich, NY based company started with $23 million in revenue and grew to $633.9 million in revenue. They could sell a billion dollars in yogurt this year. That’s absolutely ridiculous when you consider that Chobani’s Founder Hamdi Ulukaya started the company because he “stumbled upon a classified ad for a yogurt plant recently closed down by Kraft.”

I’ve been pretty lazy in terms of fashion lately. It’s been ridiculously hot in Chicago, and I have no interest in wearing anything but shorts and a t-shirt. I can get away with it because I usually work from home, but if I didn’t I might go to Chictopia for inspiration. I know Chictopia, which is based in San Francisco, CA, sounds like a place that a 14 year old boy circa 1992 would dream of, but it’s actually “the ultimate online destination for trendsetters to be inspired, socialize, and share in fashion.” It’s certainly targeted more towards women than men, but they do have stuff for the guys (it’s chic as is in “sheek” not “chick,” I think). The end goal is to “democratize fashion by giving everyone a voice.”

I’ve been hesitant to step into the world of virtual assistants. I like the idea of having people do stuff for me, but I’m not sure what I’d have them do. I just feel like I’ll spend more time explaining to the person how I want something done than it would take for me to do it on my own. I know I’m wrong. I know that having a personal assistant would help me be more productive, which is why I really should try Fancy Hands. They’re a New York, NY based company that has “a team of personal assistants ready to work for you right now.” All of their assistants are U.S. based and “eager and ready to rock.” I’ve heard great things from friends who have used Fancy Hands, so it seems that they’re living up to their marketing copy.

One of my favorite parts of running this business is the online marketing. There’s something really exciting about coming up with new and better ways to reach more people. I came in knowing nothing about the topic, and I learned it all on the fly–there are essentially no barriers to entry for a college student who wants to get into the field (which is what I basically was 5 years ago). If you want to get into the field, start reading and then start doing (e-mail me at willy@onedayonejob.com if you want more direction on that). While I’m not sure it’s the resource I’d recommend to get started with, eMarketer is a fantastic place to start digging deep into the field. They’re a New York, NY based company that “publishes data, analysis and insights on digital marketing, media and commerce.” They’ve been doing it for more than 10 years, and in that time a lot of big names (Google, MTV, and GM to name a few) have come to trust them as a key resource for the most up to date information.

Education doesn’t have to be expensive, but it often is. In the U.S. we have a culture of financing education for people. Parents put aside college funds, colleges provide financial aid, private organizations offer scholarships, and there are all kind of student loans available. In much of the rest of the world, education is seen as a luxury. Vittana is a Seattle, WA based non-profit that is working to change that through microfinance. They “envision a world of opportunity, where educated minds and skillful hands work together to uplift the next generation, breaking the cycle of poverty.”

One of the best things to happen to me when I moved to Chicago was that I found a volleyball meetup group. It was a great way to make new friends, get exercise, and improve my skills. Another was when I stumbled on Jelly Chicago, a co-working group. I really lucked out with both. Finding fun group activities isn’t usually so easy–especially if your interests don’t align with the types of groups that already exist. Lifecrowd is a company that is trying to make social group activities happen more often. They’re based in Santa Monica, CA, and they’ve “developed a community to connect those who want to pursue trying new activities with Hosts who want to share their knowledge or skills with others.”

After I graduated, I decided to get my finances in order. I cashed out savings bonds, combined bank accounts, and opened a Scottrade account so that I could start investing. This had obvious benefits, but it was also a project for me to work on during my job search. By analyzing investment ideas and managing a (very small) portfolio, I was developing new skills while giving myself something to talk about during job interviews. I highly recommend doing something like this yourself, but if it’s just not for you, you may want to take a look at Betterment. They’re a New York, NY based company that helps “people make smart decisions with their money.” Actually, I’m not sure if that’s a good way to put it. They make investing frictionless and take away any excuse that you’ve been using not to invest (besides the “I have absolutely no money to invest” excuse).

I’m often frustrated by companies that use too many buzzwords. Social media companies can be some of the worst offenders–their business is about being ahead of the curve, so they want to sound like it. Just tell me what you do! That’s why I was refreshed when I ended up on the website for GasPedal, an Austin, TX based social media company that says what they do in big letters on their home page. They “teach businesses to be nicer to you.” They do this by running “fantastic communities,” hosting “thrilling events, and writing “about marketing ideas you can actually use.” There’s also a consulting and training part of the business that I’ll bet is pretty significant.

If there’s a driving holiday, it has to be Memorial Day. I didn’t spend much time in the car this year, but last year I was in a nasty traffic jam coming back from Michigan. The jam was exacerbated by some buffoon who decided to block off a lane for at least a mile by driving slowly (it was closed for construction ahead). If only there was a way to contact him and let him know that he should read Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us). Then he’d know that full lane utilization with a zipper merge at the obstruction is the most efficient way to deal with a lane closure. BUMP is a La Jolla, CA based company that wants to create “the world’s largest communication, marketing, and safety network” by connecting license plate numbers with online profiles.

Last week a guy I knew in college e-mailed me looking for some career guidance. I’m happy to help just about anyone as long as they ask pretty specific questions, but I’m especially willing to do whatever I can to help him out. Why? While I thought I was taking a risk by doing a startup after graduation, he’s been flying helicopters in Afghanistan for the Army. It’s easy to forget that there are people like him who are risking their lives every day to protect us. Memorial Day weekend is all about thanking them and remembering those who have lost their lives in the call of duty. That’s why we’re going to take a look at an organization called Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America today. They’re based in New York, NY and Washington, DC, and they are the “country’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

I do as much of my shopping online as possible, but that’s because I don’t really enjoy shopping. It’s all about minimizing my time doing something that I don’t want to do. For some people online shopping is great for the opposite reason–it allows them to spend even more time shopping (at work, on the train, walking down the street, on the couch, etc.). The big problem with online shopping is that the experience feels a bit homogenized–you’re typically buying from major retailers or e-commerce companies. Shoptiques is a New York, NY based company that is trying to make online shopping better by bringing boutiques to the web. Why boutiques? Boutiques offer the ultimate shopping experience: “beautiful hard-to-find hand-picked fashion and knowledgeable advice from the owners who know so much about style and how to make you look beautiful.” Boutiques are anything but homogenized, but their business models don’t translate well to the web–at least they didn’t until Shoptiques came along.

In college I studied Industrial and Labor Relations, which means that I spent four years focusing on the world of work. The curriculum covered everything from slavery and indentured servitude to unions and the movement of capital to find lower cost labor. The common theme was that the way that we define and think about work is constantly changing. Today’s trend is all about having a flexible workforce–people who can join on for a project form wherever they live and then move on to a new project with someone else. Work Market is a company that “give businesses access to an on-demand scalable work force along with tools to manage three categories of labor: employees, contractors and third parties.” Many businesses in this space focus on actually building the market where labor can find work, but Work Market takes it one step further and offers the software for businesses to build their own market.

At some point you’ve probably participated in a fundraiser to help pay for someone’s medical costs. You may have organized a car wash, bought a candy bar, run in a race, or just made a simple donation. It’s one way that we take care of people in our communities when they’re in need. I met Ethan Austin, one of the company’s founders, about three years ago, and since then I’ve watched GiveForward help people raise more than $13 million and grow as a company at the same time. Earth Day is a contrived holiday. It was designed as a day of teach-ins across the country to educate students about environmental evils. April 22 was chosen as the date because it fit perfectly between spring break and final exams. If you want to maximize on-campus student activity, this is the time of year to do it. It’s worked. Earth Day now has more than 40 years of history behind it, and it continues to be a great way to rally people for environmental causes. Earth Day Network is a Washington, DC based non-profit organization that organizes Earth Day activities across the world while also focusing on environmental causes year round. In the past they’ve “executed successful environmental campaigns on issues ranging from climate change and drinking water to voter registration and saving the whale.”

You’re not going to like this. You’ve paid a lot of money for a fancy education, and now some of the best universities in the world are giving it away for free. You still have to pay to get the piece of paper, but if you’re just looking for the knowledge, then you need to check out Coursera. They’re a Mountain View, CA based startup that is “partnering with the top universities in the world to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free.” So far they’re working with Princeton, Stanford, Berkeley, Michigan, and UPenn. It doesn’t get much better than that. What makes Coursera unique from things like MIT’s OpenCourseWare is that these classes are specifically created to be consumed online.

When I see my friends from Jelly Chicago (a co-working group), we often bounce ridiculous startup ideas off of each other. For some reason, many are centered around online dating. It’s a really fun space to think about because there’s a simple problem with limitless solutions–just look at all of the different dating sites out there. Most of them require your searching through profiles and contacting people (or waiting to be contacted). Others propose matches based on fancy algorithms. MeetMoi is a mobile dating company that uses push technology to help you meet new people, and it’s all based on where you are right now. MeetMoi is located in New York, NY, but you can use it anywhere (well anywhere that they have a critical mass of users). Basically, all you have to do is fill out a profile and get out of the house. MeetMoi will find people with similar interests and push messages to your phone when you’re near each other. You can initiate a chat and decide to meet immediately, another time or not at all. It’s a little creepy, but people said that about online dating not so long ago.

I love Easter. I get pretty amped about the candy, which is why in past years I’ve featured Just Born Quality Confections, Jelly Belly, Russell Stover, and the PMCA at Easter time (and Mars, The Hershey Company, NECCO, Charles Chocolates, and Vosges at other times of the year). But in my family it’s really all about the cash. We have an annual Easter Egg Hunt that is high stakes–elbows have been thrown. The eggs with candy are the duds. The heavy ones are ok because they have dollar coins. But the ones that you really want are light–they have bills in them. Over the past few years, I’ve been able to make Easter Egg Hunts pretty profitable, but it doesn’t come close to what Hatchlings has done. They run “the world’s largest egg hunt” via Facebook, and apparently the Des Moines, IA based company has been able to generate significant advertising revenue through their app.

I have no idea where people went to ask embarrassing health questions before the Internet. I guess you could have gone to a doctor, but it’s really nice to pre-educate yourself before you ask a professional. That’s why there’s ridiculous demand for health-related information online. Everyday Health is a company that has been reacting to this demand since they started in 2002. They are a New York, NY based company that provides “consumers, healthcare professionals, and brands with content and advertising-based services across a broad portfolio of over 25 websites that span the health spectrum.” If you ask Google and embarrassing health question, there’s a really good chance that you’ll end up on one of their sites. In 2010 they were averaging 26.5 million monthly unique visitor, which is just a massive amount of traffic–especially in a niche as valuable as health related information.

Behavioral change is hard. Really hard. Whether you’re trying to be more diligent about networking or trying to lose a few pounds, you have to understand your own psychological shortfalls. If you try to make 20 changes all at once, you are going to fail. That’s why I really like how Greatist approaches health and fitness. They are aiming to inspire “the world to make one healthier choice per week.” It doesn’t sound like much, but it really adds up. And once you’re committed to one healthy choice a week, it gets a heck of a lot easier to make another one… and another one. Greatist is based in New York, NY, and they pursue their mission by providing health and fitness related content on their website. There are a million other sites that do this, but Greatist has a unique approach, a targeted market of the “young, savvy, and social,” and drastically growing traffic. Those are all really good signs.

As a guy who has been a fanatical Yankee fan as long as I can remember, I’ve probably heard this jingle at least 10,000 times. If it doesn’t sound familiar, then you either don’t live in the Northeast or have completely sequestered yourself from anything related to sports. The jingle belongs to Modell’s, a New York, NY based company that is “is the nation’s oldest, family-owned and operated, retailer of sporting goods, sporting apparel, menswear and brand name athletic footwear.” Desite the fact that Modell’s “operate over 140 stores throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Virginia, Rhode Island and the District Of Columbia,” I don’t think that I’ve ever stepped foot in one. That’s probably an anomaly because I love sporting goods, and their branding is about as good as it gets.

Admit it! You’ve used the Internet to self-diagnose a medical problem, and you probably used WebMD. For some of you it was to convince yourself that you’re not going to die tomorrow, and for some of you it was probably the opposite. It’s great having access to so much information, but it’s kind of dangerous when you a) can’t verify its accuracy and b) have no idea how to use it properly. Running to the doctor for every little issue is ridiculous, so there needs to be a better way to get medical information online. Luckily my little sister (who is awesome because she went to art school and then decided she wanted to go to med school, so she’s doing a postbac now) let me know about HealthTap. They’re a Palo Alto, CA based company that provides “free online and mobile answers from thousands of the best physicians in the U.S.” It’s kind of like Yahoo! Answers for medicine, but the people responding to your questions aren’t complete morons.

I have to admit that I’m feeling a little left out these days. There’s something that I’ve never done that it seems like other Americans are doing a lot of. I’m constantly seeing advertisements for it–on tv, on the web, on billboards, and even on banners pulled behind planes during the summer. I know it’s embarrassing, but I’ve never purchased car insurance. These poor companies have spent so much money trying to reach me, and I haven’t even looked into buying what they’re hawking. But if I was, I might try using CoverHound (if their service was available in Illinois). They’re a San Francisco, CA based company that is building the “technology and brand behind the future of insurance comparison shopping.” Why let commercials about cavemen, a guy with a deep voice, or “doing the right thing” sway you when you can base your decision on real data?

There’s no doubt that Japanese companies have been and continue to be leaders in the gaming industry. Nintendo, Sega, and Sony are some of the names that you’re most likely to recognize, but it’s very clear that the old guard of gaming is facing stiff competition from upstarts like Zynga and ngmoco that are focusing on mobile and social gaming. While Japan has historically been big on console gaming, they’re not missing out on this trend. GREE is a Japanese that is fervently entering the U.S. market in order to grow a business that generated $1.7 billion in revenue last year. GREE is unique in that their U.S. based branding has been more about hiring than games. They’ve opened a San Francisco, CA office that they’re promoting heavily with billboards, referral bonuses, and even Google AdWords campaigns. They also acquired a company called OpenFeint to speed along the growth.

The best personal finance tip that I’ve ever heard comes from Ramit Sethi at I Will Teach You to Be Rich: earn more money. As a college student, that’s exactly what you’re trying to do (get an education, so you can get a job). Oddly enough, a good way to earn more money might be going into the personal finance industry. There’s a ton of growth in the space, and one of the companies that caught my eye is LearnVest. It was started by Alexa von Tobel after realized that she graduated from Harvard and was going to work in finance without any idea of how to manage her own finances. Now they have $25 million in funding, an office in New York, NY, and a mission of helping women “live a richer life.” They do this by providing content, tools, and guidance on all types of personal finance topics.

The last time that I worked in an office was when I was an intern at Orvis. Since then I’ve had to learn how to get things done at home, and I’ve gotten pretty good at it. Still, I try to force myself to work out of the house at least once a week. I usually do this through Jelly Chicago, a co-working group that meets every Wednesday, but I also occasionally work at a coffee shop or my gym’s quiet room. Sometimes a change of scenery really helps my productivity–and if it doesn’t do that, sometimes it spurs my creativity. If I was looking for another place to work for the day, I’d probably go to Loosecubes (the site, not their office which is based in Brooklyn, NY and hosts co-workers). It’s a “community marketplace for workspace” that connects “people who have great workspace with people who need it.” Their listings stretch across 620 cities and 72 countries, so there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll be able to find something near you.
